“ Are you bringing your sister home after school?” her mom asked from behind the kitchen counter, working on some peanut butter concoction. “Nope,” she said while digging through the pantry for two packages of pop-tarts. “ Kenz, it would be really nice if you two could get al-“ she started before Kenzie tilt her head back and groaned. “ Jesus , calm your shit. I’m not driving her because she’s hanging out with the Collins’ stepford clan after school, not because I hate her,” she said, sporting a fake smile as she walked out of the kitchen. “Do you hate your sister!?” her mom called out. “ Bye mom,” she said, raising her arm up lazily in a gesture before she passed her dad, pulling a jacket on quickly over her outfit. “ Hey daddy,” she said happily, bouncing on her toes to kiss his cheek. “Mom’s working on cookies… see you after school,” she said, picking up her empty backpack and slinging it over her shoulder as she head out the door.
Moments later she was walking into the Madden household. “Sup, big Madden?” she asked Shane before tossing him one of the pop tart packages. She made her way quickly up the stairs, looking at the clock. They had twenty minutes to get to class. “ Hey, freakshow” she said, nudging the edge of Brayden’s bed with her boot. “ Wake up, seriously,” she said, going to his closet to grab him a clean shirt before she threw it in his direction and head back downstairs. A little while later he was finally coming down, getting into her car before she offered him the second pop tart package. Must be in the Renner blood to want to feed those Madden guys. When they got to the school, she gave him a wave as they walked toward opposite ends of the building since they had a different schedule.
“Miss Renner, am I boring you?” her teacher called out, causing her to open her eyes and sit up straight again. “ Hm?” she asked, pushing her hair behind her ear. “ We were discussing the out of school study program… for career planning,” the teacher said, lifting an expectant eyebrow. “Yeah I’m already taking over my dads label when he croaks, so…” she said, making a confused face on why this mattered to her. “ Is this class a joke to you?” she questioned. “ I mean not just this class… “ Kenzie said making a gesture around to the entire building. “ I mean hell the only reason I’m in cheerleading is so that I’m not the dweeb with bandaids on her fingers when they film a documentary on me someday and show pictures from way back when. Sex sells and all…” she said, narrowing her eyebrows at the cardigan and tight expression the teacher was wearing. “ I mean for some people,” she said, giving a nod. “ I mean some people are into the uptight librarian thing. I’m sure that’s a fetish under like… fat Asians or something…” she said, putting her hands up slightly. “You are seriously nothing like your mom,” the girl next to her said, while sitting back. “ That’s not true… Nice hair cut, butch. I’m guessing you grew up on Natalia Richmond. So it’s not okay for me to speak my mind, but you love the psycho who went in and out of rehab like ten times before she packed on weight and went straight to the check out lane at Home Depot to stock up on a lifetime supply of Lesbians R Us….” Kenzie said before looking at the teacher. “ Yeah yeah, I’ll just go myself,” she said, getting up to make her way to the principals office.
Kenzie yawned while she was standing in line at the cafeteria, before Tommy spoke up from behind her. “ Hey baby girl…” he said, causing Kenzie to turn on her heel with an annoyed look. “ Tommy,” she said, faking a smile. “ What do you say we go out tonight, get to know the backseat of my new car” Kenzie gave a nod like she was in serious thought, “ Tempting. But… your dads a mechanic, Tommy.” she said, scrunching her nose. “ You’re not going to hang out with me cause my dad’s a mechanic?” he questioned. “No, I’m not hanging out with you cause you’re a douche. But I just thought I would point out…. That your dad is a mechanic… “ she said, walking away from the lunch line since she had suddenly lost her appetite. She paused, seeing a girl sitting by herself as the girl pushed her glasses up on her nose. Kenzie’s shoulders deflated as she sighed to herself, “ God damnit,” she muttered, going over to the kid. “ Hey…nerd..” she said, lifting her eyebrows. “ Why are you sitting by yourself?” she questioned before sitting down next to her. “ Um… well all of my friends are…” Kenzie made a pained face as she listened to her struggle. “Imaginary?” she said with a knowing nod. “Sure, I can roll with that,” she said, watching the girl for a moment longer before putting her feet up on the table and leaning back in her chair.
“ Look… you’re not making things easier on yourself. Lose the glasses. Unless you’re wearing them in a hipster retro kind of way, they aren’t cool. Even then, that’s still really gay. Get a shirt that shows off your body, nerds always have good bodies hiding underneath their bulky cat sweaters that their aunt gave them for Christmas. Just… try to fake confidence..at least. Brush your hair, or put it up… or go for the just had sex kind of look..” she said, cracking her fingers as she spoke. “And the next time you’re sitting alone in the cafeteria, don’t look timid about it. Own that shit. Make people wonder what you’re doing, be the one in control. None of these people matter, and none of us will know who we really are until we leave this hell hole anyway. You could be the next America’s Sweetheart. Or.. you could see yourself through their eyes and never become anything but the timid girl with papercuts from being at the library too much” she said with a nod. “ Thanks…” the girl said quietly. “ You don’t have lunch.. do you want some of my tater tot hot dish?” she questioned politely. Kenzie gave the girl another pained look. “No…” she said lazily while shaking her head. “ I will take your apple though, “ lifting her hand up to catch it, before taking a bite. “ Also, quit eating tater tot hot dish,” she said before catching Brayden’s eye and waving at him since she was sitting somewhere different today. She gave a small sigh to herself as she watched him walk. Honestly it wasn’t fair how attractive he was, like someone had literally plucked the idea of what the perfect man was from her brain and put it into human form. Or maybe because she had known Brayden all of her life, it was him that had decided what her perfect man was, it wouldn’t have mattered what he looked like.
