Kenzie took a piece of the cookie dough, taking a bite of it before looking over her shoulder and throwing a piece of it at Emma who was working tirelessly on something with her keyboard that she’d set on the kitchen table. When she looked over at her mom, she was was saying something which just looked like soundless motion to Kenzie. She finished chewing the cookie dough and lowered her earbuds. “ What?” she asked while making a face. “ Have you had those in the whole time!?” Blake asked with an upset tone before taking Kenzie’s earbuds and phone away from her. “ Hey, whoa..” Kenzie said, trying to think of any argument that she could come up with. But she scrunched her nose, trying to figure out how she could squeeze “dad mom thought we were baking together even though I was ignoring her”into an adorable statement that would end up in a hug from him. Damnit. Not probably. “ You could at least be nice to your sister. Have you been nice to your sister?” Blake asked with a hopeful look. “ Oh my god, I’m nice to the twerp, what do you want from me?” she asked defensively before sitting on a stool. Where the eff was Brayden?
Kenzie knew it probably looked like she didn’t like Emma, but the fact of the matter was, nine out of ten nights she was sneaking into her room to gossip late into the early morning. Just because it looked like they shouldn’t make sense on the surface, didn’t mean that Emma didn’t have a special place in Kenzie’s heart. Even with Blake having a fit right now, Kenzie put her feet up on the counter, looking over at Emma to give her a wink. That was her girl. She took in a deep breath and played with the bracelet against her wrist. “ What are you working on?” she asked before dropping her feet and going over to her with some of the cookie dough that Blake had been working on. Kenzie looked through the sheets at the music before setting them back on the table. “ How’s Tanner?” Emma said, smiling to herself. Kenzie watched Emma for a moment, so observative that one was. Kenzie lift her eyebrows before giving a slight shake of her head. “ Yeah he didn’t call me back… on my birthday. So I haven’t talked to him since,” Kenzie said with a shrug of her shoulder. “ What kind of a boyfriend would forget that…” Emma said while making a face.
Kenzie looked back up at Blake, who was still trying to make cookies for Logan, some sort of ‘never ending love’ crap. “ I still think you girls should do an album. Just for fun. You guys have the music genes, you know how to use the equipment. Have some fun with it.” Blake said, giving a shrug of her shoulder. Kenzie made a face, turning her head ot look at Emma. “Yeah but ..neither of us have like, seriously been in love, or seriously broken up with someone,” she said, trying to figure out what they would base it off of. “ You’re about to,” Emma said in a way that could only come off non-condescending when she said it. That tiny little girl had a way of being blunt at times without being an asshole. But Kenzie? She gave one opinion and suddenly she was an asshole. Maybe because she usually ended it by calling the other person an asshole. Kenzie narrowed her eyes as she got lost in that thought for a moment before taking a deep breath. “ So a potential break up song,” she said before bringing her hands up to her head and resting them in her hair. “Thinking what I’m thinking?” she questioned Emma before there was a moment of silence between them, and then a burst of energy as they jumped up and started to run toward the home studio. “ Hey!” Blake called after them, giving a defeated sigh as s she looked around the kitchen with her hands on her hips.
Kenzie put her hair up in a ponytail, going over to set up the keyboard and guitar while Emma started prepping the switchboard and monitors. “ Test,” Kenzie spoke into the microphone before waiting on a thumbs up from Emma. Kenzie set everything down, stepping up on a chair to grab a yellow notepad that Blake scribbled on sometimes. She made a face, it looked like Blake was working on a new song. So she ripped the top page off and threw it toward the corner. “ Hey I found paper,” she said, stepping back onto the same side as Emma before she sat down and scavenged for a pen to scribble out some lyrics. So they sat for the next couple of hours, with Emma and Kenzie going back on forth on everything that Tanner was an idiot about, until Emma was in the booth, trying out some pretty wicked guitar solos. “ Coffee’s here,” Brayden said, surprising Kenzie as she dropped her feet from the counter. “ Hey!” she said excitedly, standing up to hug him. “ Isn’t she…amazing?” Kenzie said with a smile as she watched her sister through the glass. Okay, maybe this was one of those rare moments that she wasn’t afraid to let people see how much she could admire her little sister. But it was Brayden. He knew everything about her, it was different.
“ Okay, so when she’s done, I actually need to work with the effects. But .. you wanna do some drum work?” she asked, giving a quick smile. “ I’d do it, but I want to talk over the effects with Emma when she’s in here,” she said, before bringing up both of her fists lazily to fist bump him. Kenzie stood up on her toes, giving him a quick kiss before she leaned down to push the button to talk to Emma. “ That last one… let’s record it,” she said, waiting for Emma to go back to the top as she hit record. She reached over, picking up the paper with lyrics before Brayden could find it and slid it into her back pocket. “ If Emma and I record together maybe you can work the board,” she said wiggling her eyebrows, before picking up her coffee and taking a long sip.
“Mom thinks I hate her, and that we don’t spend enough time together,” Kenzie said as she watched Emma. Maybe that was part of the reason she was enjoying doing this. But, to be fair, there were only two people in this world that she would risk everything for, and they were both standing here with her. Kenzie waited until Emma was finished before ending the recording and giving her a thumbs up, setting the coffee down. “ You’re up,” she said, giving Brayden a quick pat on the side of his leg. She watched as Brayden and Emma moved past each other, him entering the booth, her coming to the board. “ That was really good,” Kenzie said, offering her Brayden’s coffee. Kenzie held onto her coffee, unaware of the small smile that was forming while she watched Brayden moving through the booth and getting himself situated at the drums. Though it grew when he brought his hand up to mess with his hair before twirling a drumstick.
Kenzie’s attention was slightly pulled away when she looked at Emma, who was seemingly watching her,..watch Brayden. “ What? Shut up. You’re a loser.” she said rapidly, before clearing her throat and sitting up. “ Alright daarrling, whenever you’re ready,” she said, giving a smile. Kenzie played the track for him a couple of times, letting him hear it and do a few takes before he could do something that he felt was right, which really didn’t take long at all. There were some magical genes in this studio. “ Okay our turn,” she said, taking the lyrics back out of her pocket and handing them to Emma. Kenzie stood up, still slightly leaning toward the counter as she drank as much coffee from her cup as she could before she set it down on the counter.
The time Kenzie and Emma spent in the recording booth was filled with lyric changes, laughter, yelling at Blake to get out when she came to tell Brayden he was invited to stay for dinner and that she made a take home container for his dad (duh), and dancing. So when they finally came back in, where Brayden seemed to be making some changes, she was caught slightly off guard when he questioned her “ Should my drumming be more angsty? You breaking up with Tanner or something?”. Kenzie sat on the corner. “ Did you listen to the lyrics?! Potentially.. Why? Jealous? Wanna wife me up?” she asked, bouncing her shoulders. “ Emma, Brayden is like one week away from standing outside our window and holding a boombox up for me, or driving off with me on his lawnmower. What other cliché is there?” she asked, making a face as she looked at Emma. “ …Working on a song together…” Emma said under her breath, in reference to how their parents started. “ What was that?” Kenzie questioned with a lift of her eyebrows. “ Nobody puts baby in a corner..” she said, causing Kenzie to stare at her in confusion still before looking at Brayden. “ Ems and I are hungry.” she said, standing off of the counter to leave down and give him another quick kiss. “ Hurry up, dinner’s ready,” she said, running back toward the door, yelling for Logan as she made her way upstairs.
