Kenzie was standing in the middle of a very crowded bathroom, looking down at her phone as she tried her best to get a signal. Nothing. She’d already missed two calls from Brayden, not counting the times she had tried calling him too. She felt like she hadn’t spoken to him in forever, and it was starting to make her seriously depressed. They’d never gone this long without talking, but he was on tour, and it was the summer right before her wedding. In fact, she was standing in the bathroom at the premiere of her fiance’s new movie coming out. It wasn’t like she should be trying to get ahold of a different guy anyway. Kenzie closed her eyes, giving a defeated sigh before she placed her phone back in her black clutch and moved out of the bathroom.
Kenzie scrunched her nose as she moved along the group of people, trying not to mess up her hair or get anything on her dress. Daniel was so stressed about this evening and she didn’t want to upset him by looking like a mess or anything on the night of his premiere. He’d already vetoed three dresses and two hairstyles before they even got here this evening. But, she figured, she didn’t know what it was like to be under that amount of stress and she was sure it wasn’t easy. She scanned a tray of champagne. It was one thing to drink when it was just her and a few friends, but knowing that it was a public event, with cameras, she didn’t want to disappoint her dad either. Sober wasn’t fun without Brayden. She sighed again, not taking into account how many times she’d already done that this evening before she started to approach Daniel who was talking with the director and a few of his friends.
Hearing what he was talking about, she stopped short, not coming up to him all the way. “ I mean sure, I let her think it was her idea. But how realistic would law school have been? I’m just trying to protect her. She would’ve failed, and then been disappointed.” Kenzie straightened her shoulders a bit, taken back by what he was saying. “ I just don’t understand the need to do something different. Look at the genes she comes from, her dad’s even set up an entire empire for her taking essentially as she gets older. Law school doesn’t fit into that equation. She’s pretty, she doesn’t need to be smart, too.”. The couple of guys he was talking to laughed, but Kenzie wasn’t sticking around to here their opinions. Stressed or not, he didn’t realize how much of an asshole he could sound like sometimes. Wanted to protect her feelings by making sure she didn’t fail at something? Who says shit like that? Though, she knew that in his mindframe, he probably was doing her a favor.
Kenzie moved through the crowd, deciding for herself that she was just going to call Brayden from a landline and her fiance’s studio could pay for her to long distance call …whatever Brayden was to her. But before she could reach a phone, someone was approaching her. “ Miss Renner,” the gentlemen said, before offering her a smile and sticking his hand out. “ Hi, hello,” Kenzie said, placing on a smile. Kenzie may have been a brat at school sometimes, but if there was one thing about work that she learned from her father, it was that when you stepped inside the building you gave everyone the same amount of respect, whether it was the CEO or the janitor. And after all, wasn’t she working right now? “ My name is Jonathan Bates, I’m a reporter for New York Syndicate. Can I grab a couple of questions from you?” he questioned. Kenzie looked over her shoulder back at Daniel, before looking Jonathan in the eye and smiled. “ Of course,” she said, placing her clutch underneath her arm.
“ So you and Daniel have been together since you were in highschool, now that you’ve graduated and you’re getting married, what do you have to say to people who think you may be rushing into something so young?”. Kenzie lift her eyebrows, before offering a diplomatic laugh, “ Starting off with the big punches, um..” she said, licking her lips as she tried to stall and give herself a moment to think. “You know everyone lives life at their own speed. My parents started something amazing both professionally and personally at young ages. And I think that growing up in the environment that I have… you mature a lot faster than people who get to live a more normal life. I mean I’m at a Superman premiere and you’re asking me about my upcoming wedding, nothing about that is normal. So it’s hard I think for people to expect me to live a normal life. And.. quite frankly, no matter what I do is going to be put under a microscope. Right now I’m getting married too young, but if I waited to get married, the media might turn it around and say I’m a spinster. So I think what I’ve learned from.. my parents, um.. is that you just have to do what makes you happy, because at the end of the day the people that are judging you for your choices aren’t the ones that care about you in the first place,” she said. Kenzie opened her mouth slightly, realizing how much her last statement sounded like what she was trying to mentally balance with Daniel right now. She looked down, narrowing her eyebrows a bit before looking back up at him.
“ You and your sister seem to be very mature for your age and how you handle the spotlight,” Kenzie smiled and gave a slight nod, “ We sort of have to be. You don’t get to be a Renner without acquiring some pretty thick skin.” she said, laughing quietly. “ You don’t get to be a Renner without being best friends with the Madden family either it seems like. Have you been keeping up with the heart throb tattooed on your wrist while he’s on tour?” he asked. Kenzie smiled instantly, “ It’s hard… really. Cause we’ve never been away from each other this long. And when you’ve grown up taking..countless baths together you sort of form this bond that I think other people can’t understand. So when he does something like a tour, I feel like I’m watching his dreams come true. And we would spend every night praying to God that each of our dreams would come true together. So to see him as happy as he can possibly be, it’s the most comforting thing I can have right now while he’s gone. He’s doing fantastic. Have you seen a show?” she asked with a lift of her eyebrows. “ Not yet, but my girls are his absolute biggest fans. They’re in love with him and have his posters on their walls..” he admitted with a shake of his head. “ Well I’ll let him know, he always loves hearing about fans. You can tell them I have posters on my walls, too” she said teasingly before she realized she was popping her fingers nervously.
“One last question…It’s going to be another hard hitting one” he said. “Oh boy,” Kenzie said, pushing her hair behind her ear. “ What was your favorite part of the movie tonight?” Kenzie stared at him for a moment, looking over her shoulder at Daniel. It would be easy to lie, make something up, say how proud she was of Daniel. She’d tried so hard not to embarrass him tonight, and the best way to continue that would be to give him just as much praise, if not more, as she had just given Brayden. But there was something different about her and Daniel. They fought nonstop anyway. Kenzie looked at the reporter, giving a tight smile. “The end of it,”. The reporter gave a quiet, nervous laugh. “ I’m sorry, your favorite part of the Superman movie was the end of it?” he repeated. Kenzie gave a nod, before shrugging both of her shoulders. “What can I say… I’m more of a Batman girl,” she said, offering a smile as she stuck her hand out to him. “ It was such a pleasure meeting you Jonathan. I hope you have a fantastic evening,” she said before making her way out. There was another thing she’d learned from her father about the business – always have a car waiting for you if you decide to make a quick exit. Kenzie opened the door to the backseat, looking up at the driver as she started to take her heels off. “ Taco bell..please..” she said, giving a tired smile before she sat back, letting her phone ring beside her as Daniel’s name lit up. Kenzie ignored it, shaking her head. Now her phone decided to have service. She picked it up, sending him a quick text saying, ‘ Too pretty to know how to answer a phone. No smarts, buttons are hard’..
