Jo belt the lyrics out to ‘Ex’s and Oh’s’ as she moved throughout the apartment. Rory was out for the morning, and it seemed like the perfect time to try and sneak in some cleaning when she wasn’t around. She’d turned the volume up on the speakers as loud as she possibly could, rummaging through the apartment at lightening speed, not caring about the mess she was making with her own hair, as long as she was cleaning up the mess in the apartment. But it was when she heard someone in the apartment that she came to a complete stop. Jo placed her hand around the Ruger 380, moving quietly throughout the apartment. As she turned out into the hallway, she held it up, pointing it directly at…. Ethan? “ What the hell, Jo?” Ethan said, throwing his arms up. “ What the hell, Jo? What the hell, Ethan!” she said back at him, realizing she was still holding up the Ruger before lowering it to her side. “ You should find a different place to hide your spare key than a plastic rock outside the door in an apartment building…. And your music was so loud you didn’t hear me knocking,” he said, lowering the volume on her stereo before turning to look back at her. “Hey the package said the rock blends in,” Jo said dryly before setting the Ruger down and crossing her arms.
“ Rory isn’t here,” she said, clapping her hands together once. “Yeah, I know. I came to talk to you actually,” he said, sitting down on the arm of the couch. Jo narrowed her eyebrows in slight confusion as she made her way farther into the living room. Had she stolen anything from him? She didn’t think so. Though when they took that last trip to Michigan…. Had she? No. She definitely hadn’t. Kelin had been rather dashing that trip and she had been distracted. Outdoor life looked good on him. “ Okay…. What’s up?” she questioned awkwardly, standing across the opposite side of the room instead of sitting down with him. Ethan was a great guy and all, it’s just… she wouldn’t consider him a best friend. That’s what Rory was for. And she was still on the fence about whether or not he would someday hurt her. And if she had to kill him, it would be easier to do if she wasn’t friends with him. “ Rory and I haven’t been together that long, and I don’t think this is something I could ever really take lightly. I just think it’s going in a positive direction… and if it continues to go this way, I was curious if you would be willing to help me find a ring.”. Jo froze, tightening her fingers against her arms as her eyebrows shot up into the air. “ A ring..” she echoed. “ I spoke to her father when we vacationed in Michigan,” he continued. “ Hooolly FUCK, man,” Jo said, finally sitting down on whatever stack of junk was behind her.
“ Oh my god it’s like you just propose to everybody man,” Jo said, bringing her hands to her knees as she tried to work everything out in her mind. “….Just Natalia. I mean clearly a family and a relationship is important to me. And look, with Rory, I would expect she’d want some sort of long engagement. For some scientific reason, or some season works better, or she wants a designer but they’re helping sea creatures in like.. Nantucket…” he said, starting to talk to himself slightly. Jo brought her hands up to her face, wiping the corners of her eyes. They were not ready for this, as a social group. ‘Oh, that’s my married friend Rory’. No. Because that would mean that Rory was moving out, and then what? Then what?! Kelin would be all, ‘ oh hey there lass, I see you have a vacancy in your home dwellings. Shall I pack my luggage with a skip and a hop and be there early by the morn’ “ with his stupid Irish self. “Oh my god,” she said, a nauseous expression coming over her face.
“ I really hope her reaction is better than yours,” Ethan tried to tease, but Jo found herself just giving an unimpressed stare at his attempt of humor. Rory was crazy about that man, for some reason. Physically, Jo didn’t see it. He looked like a caveman, but if Rory was into that thing,, it wasn’t her job to stop it. Just like it wasn’t Rory’s job to stop the fact that apparently Jo was dating a Lucky Charms commercial with a charming smile and a great ass. “ Alright,” she said, agreeing as though it sounded like the most painful thing in the world to be agreeing to. “You’ll help me?” Ethan said, a mixture of surprise and happiness crossing his features. “ Yeah, yeah. I’ll help you. But you do not breathe a word of this to Kelin. Not a word,”. Ethan rose from the arm of the couch, placing a smile on his lips. “ Jo, he has a kid. He’s at least thought about it. But he’s also known you for more than five minutes. So he won’t be spooking you like a deer. Rory will tell him when you’re ready,” Ethan said, going over to give Jo a hug. Jo placed her hands up, “ Verbal happiness is enough for this moment.” she said, making her way toward the front door so that she could let him out. “ Thank you again, Jo, it really means a lo-“he said, before Jo was shutting the door in his face. She waited to make sure he was gone before opening the door and stealing her rock back. Jo took a deep breath, placing her hands on her hips as she puffed out her cheeks and looked around the apartment. “ Fuck.” she said, going to turn her music back up to finish cleaning.
