Madeline turned her neck to the side, feeling the tension already starting to build up in the middle of her shoulders. She closed her eyes, letting her hair fall off of her neck and down over her shoulders so that it hit the back of her chair. This was going to be the longest class ever. Normally she just sat and doodled, but she hadn’t done that in forever. Every time she sat still she just zombie out. She couldn’t hum along to music, she couldn’t draw little characters on her notes, she couldn’t follow story lines in movies. She sat down her eyes glossed over, and she zoned out. There was only one other time in her entire life that had ever happened and it was right after David died. But she had only let herself be that way for a short period of time. Joel needed her to be strong, he needed her to wrap her arms around him and let him lean on her. But now what good was that? Who did she need to pretend for? Ryan. Only he saw right through everything so what was the point in the first place. She looked to her side as someone sat beside her and instead of offering a polite smile she just stared straight ahead and watched her professor fumbling with his paperwork inside his briefcase. Seconds later her eyes were fixed on the chalkboard, already dazed off into a daydream of what had happened the day before.
‘ Madeline,… Maddie they need you on set’. Madeline scrunched her nose. Biggest pet peeve in the world. Maddie. But she stood up from her chair and headed over to the front of the cameras, untying her robe before she handed it off to whoever was closest to her. Madeline brought her hands up to her hair, shaking it out at the roots to give it some more volume. “ Ready, darling?” the photographer said to her and Madeline took in a deep breath, not even acknowledging him with a nod. Instead she walked over to the staircase and held her hand against the rail. They were doing a series of photo shoots today and then also doing some footage for some more commercials. Madeline moved some of her hair over her shoulder, placing her hand down on the staircase as she lowered herself against one of the steps and sat down, stretching her legs out over the staircase until the bottom of her heels hit surface. ‘ Alright, I guess she’s ready’ he said, looking over his shoulder to yell at someone to start playing the music. The music was always two different genres; upbeat and poppy think Britney Spears and Rihanna, or sultry and seductive.. like Maroon 5. Sometimes she was able to sneak in a little Maine and All Time Low. Things like LoveStruck got played, but come on. That was a part of everyones life in their little group. Before she knew it the cameras started flashing and for the first time on set she caught herself not focusing. She looked down to the side, closing her eyes before she took in a deep breath and brought her head back up. With each shutter of the camera all she could think of was the camera that the paparazzi held, yelling out questions about Joel. ‘ Hey darling.. more seductive, less saddened. When people look at your ads they want to see sex.. not tears. They want to think you’re so geared up to go that you can’t even make it up the stairs, you have to lay there… not that you are suicidal and contemplating falling down the stairs,”. Madeline tensed her body, clenching down on her jaws as he spoke so candidly about suicide. It was enough that she thought of David every second anyways, then he was just so cavalier about it. Madeline coughed and adjusted her body back against the steps, doing her best to put on a better face but just moments later one of the songs she hadn’t heard in months came on over the speaker system. As the words to ‘Love Me’ started swirling all over the set she placed her hands down on the step she was seated upon and pushed herself off. “ Taking a break,” she said, grabbing the robe quickly from the person she had handed it off too and made her way back over to her belongings. No need to change, just get your car keys, go home. Ryan wouldn’t say anything about her walking into their apartment wearing lingerie and a robe. It was more than what she usually wore at home anyways. ‘ Get back over here, you can’t just leave’ the photographer said as Madeline was digging through her purse to get her keys. ‘ We just need to change the music’ a girl said quietly off to her side. ‘ No that is ludacris. She can’t behave like a diva and think it is alright. Look princess, you’re here for one reason and one reason only. Get over there and look pretty for the camera, got it?”. Madeline shouldered her purse, already taking her phone out to get ahold of Ryan. She didn’t have the gumption to take care of this problem, but Ryan could. He could talk to the higher ups at Victoria Secret about how she was treated and do it with a hell of a lot more determination. If she brought it up, she would just as likely be a doormat when they coaxed things over with her.
Madeline snapped back to reality as she looked to her side, hearing her classmates ringtone go off in class. Not just any ringtone, oh no. It had to be a Joel Foster ringtone. Madeline took in a deep breath and looked straight ahead. What the hell was this? ‘ Miss Foster, phones off during class”. Madeline scrunched her eyebrows and shook her head slightly. “ My phone’s on silent,” she said. One, not caring that her phone was on at all and two letting him know it wasn’t her. ‘ Sorry’ the girl next to her whispered as quietly as she possibly could. ‘ So it’s a coincidence that you’re sitting in my classroom and the downfall of music as we know it blasts from one of the phones of my students?”. Madeline scoffed as she looked him over. Seriously, dude? “ Uh yeah, seems that way.” she said, hoping he would just carry on and be done with it. “ One of the issues with the famous, class.. is their need to be noticed even in the smallest of settings. Miss Foster chooses a career path that is blatant and in your face, while adapting a wardrobe on campus that catches the attention of the male eye… all while making it clear that there is turmoil going on in her family, .. via her brother” he said, leaning against his desk. ‘ Since this is sociology after all… maybe we should take a look at the ‘celebrity’ persona and what makes them feel so entitled to be in the spotlight at all times,’. Madeline licked her lips and looked down at her notebook, feeling her pulse start to rise in anger as she debated what the hell she should do. ‘ I heard he got hit by his own tour bus’, ‘ No way I heard it was one of the fans moms who couldn’t get a ticket to the show’. Madeline tensed, doing her best to ignore all of them. ‘ So is he like really in the hospital? Or is it all a sham?”, “ Yeah his relationship with Dani Cooper was fake.. this is probably for publicity, too.” one girl said with a roll of her eyes. “ Guys, I love him. Don’t talk about him like that!” one girl cried out , seeming like she was on the verge of tears. Madeline looked at her, wondering for a moment how many times she had cried over a boy she didn’t know at all, when Madeline hadn’t. “ So were you able to be a model because of him?”, “ No .. she was a model before he got famous. The only reason that douche is on the radio is because he is signed by Logan Renner.. you know, the guy Madeline slept with in order to be in his music video,”. Madeline shut her book, stacking all of her stuff together to pick it up as they continued. “ Oh! Speaking of fake relationships…. How is that divorce with Senator O’Callaghan treating you?”, “ Yeah aren’t you seeing Ryan O’Neil? “, “ I saw an interview of him and Joel, they’re really good friends… is that all it takes to sleep with you?”. Madeline shouldered her messenger bag and made her way down the steps , having to get past her professor before she could reach the door. ‘Well one thing the Foster family seems to have perfected is the dramatic exit’ her professor said dryly, finally leaning away from his desk. Dramatic exit, what like Joel chose to get hit by a car? Madeline turned around, forming her hand into a fist quickly before she planted it as strongly as she could against his nose.
Madeline cursed underneath her breath as she walked into the hallway, looking down at her hand as she spotted the blood and shook it out quickly. Hurt like a motherfucker. How the hell did guys get in fights so often? How did Patrick continuously hit her? It hurt to punch people. Madeline lowered her hand, not even caring to wash the blood away from it before she hurried her way to the parking lot to find her car. She drove without the radio, which she’d been doing for the last two months and sped her way to her and Ryan’s apartment, shifting gears in her car roughly as she tapped her thumb against the steering wheel. So there was probably going to be some sort of fall out for punching your professor, right? Ryan probably couldn’t fix that one. Damnit. Madeline parked in the parking garage, slamming the breaks roughly as she threw the car into park. So not good for her transmission. She got out of the car, leaving her books, bag, purse, phone, everything. She went to the elevator, pushing the buttons impatiently until they shut, shutting her off from the world. The only person she had to see now was Ryan, and that’s all she wanted anyways. Once the elevator doors opened she rushed to her and Ryan’s door, unlocking the door and made her way inside, feeling relief almost instantly. ‘ Sweetheart, I’m home early” she said, walking into the living room where she found him on the couch. Madeline slid out of her heels, kneeling down onto the couch before she rested her head against his chest and wrapped her arms around his lower body to make herself comfortable.
