All of the anxiety and nerves that had been pulsing through his body completely escaped the moment he got out in that water. And as he steadied his stance, keeping his knees locked as he bent forward and moved his hips to match the movement of the wave, he stood up straight once tapering it off. He looked up at the crowd, able to tell from their reaction that he had nailed it and felt his shoulders relax. Instead of riding the board to the shore and jumping off where there were just a few feet of water, he waited until the next wave was coming and jumped off of his board completely, throwing his body roughly into the water before he regained his surroundings and swam until his lungs couldn’t take it anymore. He loved everything about the water, absolutely loved being in it, everything. Some of the other surfers he knew only hopped into the water when only their calves would get wet, or would bitch and moan every time they crashed into a wave. Not this guy. When he got closer to the shore he planted his feet against the sand before he lifted himself out of the water and screamed out in victory, pumping his fist in the air as he scanned the crowd for Libby. After running his hand over his face to get the water out of his eyes, he shook his shaggy hair from side to side before he ran out of the water and over to one of his best friends, picking her up as he spun her around in a circle, hugging her tightly.
Bentley kept one of his arms wrapped around her waist so that he was still hugging her to his body as some of the other mates he had that were sponsored by the same people came over to congratulate him. Wins from him meant more money for them, too. But he kept Libby close, his fingertips clasped firmly over the front of her hip while his arm was behind her, as he lifted his free hand and gave the guys a few fist bumps. “ That’s going to take the win, man” a few of them said and Bentley took in a deep breath. He hoped so. Finally he set Libby down, giving her a quick apology for getting her wet. Which he did at every competition she came to. There were just a few more surfers left, but he sort of felt confident. He hated admitting that. They all loved the same thing, some people were just better at it. Bentley looked down, realizing that Libby was trying to offer him something. “ Oh, thank you” he said, reaching down and taking the towel from her before he brought it up to his head and started shaking it over his hair. When he was done drying off his upper body, he offered the towel over to Libby incase she wanted to dry off her arms and stomach from where he had gotten her wet. Bentley leaned down and picked up his t-shirt before putting it on, pulling it down, smoothing it over his stomach. “I love you, Bentley!” someone screamed out and he made a slightly startled face, looking over at the girl who was with her friends. Love something more practical, dude… like surfing. But he gave a half-hearted smile, lifting his hand up to wave at them before he took in a nervous breath.
Bentley draped his arm over Libby’s shoulders, making himself comfortable with her, but the expression on his face probably looked like someone told him he was about to have a heart attack. Eyebrows narrowed, jaws clenched, eyes locked. He watched as the last kid took his board out on the wave. And though the kid crashed, sealing the win for Bentley, he didn’t feel excitement in that moment. He bit the inside of the cheek, trying to stand on his toes to see how the kid recovered. He would have to give him a tip on how to better handle that situation when he came out of the water. He didn’t want to just win because other people weren’t good. He wanted to win because he was the best,.. going up against people who were damn good, too. So if that meant helping them out, he sure as hell would. “ Did you see the way he off-balanced that? He totally negated that turn out,” he said with a shake of his head, directing his remark to Libby. She’d learned a lot about surfing from her friendship with him. Just like he sort of figured he knew more about field hockey than he ever imagined he would. Bentley brought his free hand up to rest behind the back of his neck as he watched the judges who were talking amongst themselves. They rounded up quickly, giving a nod over to some of the announcers before offering him an envelope. Bentley lowered his arm from Libby’s shoulders, putting his hands together as he started popping his knuckles anxiously. He looked down at some of his team mates and gave them a little wave before he looked back at the stand. None of them had placed in fifth,..fourth.. third.. or second. And he was beginning to get a bit anxious , worrying that maybe he should have spent more time practicing instead of taking Abigail out for that late night date. “ Bentley Wright, South Africa” the announcer called out and Bentley brought his hand into a fight instantly, tensing up in celebration before he turned and wrapped his arms around Libby’s shoulders in a hug, kissing the side of her hair happily before he made his way up to take the trophy. Bentley held it loosely, lifting it into the air as he lifted off his thumb and first two fingers to wave to the crowd before shaking the announcers hand.
Over the span of the next hour he posed for a few pictures, including standing in front of one of those ridiculous giant checks, posing with his team mates, with some fans, changing into a little more acceptable outfit and handed off his trophy to Libby before he was being escorted to an interview with ESPN where they had set up a small stage on the sand. “ Nice to meet you, Erin” he said to the beautiful sports anchor as she lifted her hand up to his to shake. “ Pleasure as well, Bentley. Congratulations on your win,” she said and Bentley smiled appreciatively while taking his seat. He sat back, letting the girl adjust his mic before he leaned forward to take a sip of water. “ Joining us on the shore of Hawaii’s finest beach is Bentley Wright, with yet ANOTHER first place trophy to put on his mantle piece. Bentley, congratulations on your success today. Not only did you win today, but you have officially broken the record for youngest surfer to win this amount of competitions. How does that make you feel?” she asked, resting her arms on her chair. “ Is that so, huh?” he said, unaware that he had broken that record. “ Well that’s fantastic, I mean .. it obviously feels great,” he said, lifting his eyebrows up in surprise. “ I don’t think it means I can sit back and rest though, if anything I just think it means I need to work a bit harder,” he said, licking his lips as he looked back over at her.
“ What would you like to accomplish next in your life, what’s the next goal you’re aiming for?”she asked and Bentley was quick to respond, “ I mean as far as my career goes I’d love to keep taking the trophies, and uh.. learning from everyone out on the water. And um, honestly in my personal life.. I guess the next goal I’d like to accomplish would be graduating college,” he said. “ And you just recently enrolled in a college on the east coast in the states, what exactly are you majoring in?” she asked and Bentley cleared his throat, “ Yeah I’ll be at Columbia. I’m majoring in marine biology, so I’m pretty excited. Even after I’m not winning trophies I’ll still be able to get out in the water which is what it’s all about anyways,” he said honestly. “ There’s some pretty important people in your life that have moved their lives to the East coast. Has that played any factor in your decision?”. Bentley it the inside of his cheek as he thought about Joel, Madeline, Rosie. They were all already on the East coast, and he knew Libby would be there soon, too. “ I would be lying if I said it didn’t play some factor in my choice,” he offered. “ And will you be leaving the South Africa team to represent the United States?” she asked and Bentley narrowed his eyebrows, since he hadn’t exactly gone public with it. “ I am getting duel citizenship with America and I will be surfing professionally for the American team,” he said nervously before flashing a quick smile, “ Heard it hear first,” he said while rolling his eyes. No one cares
“ Another famous pair of South Africans who recently garnered a duel citizenship to claim their place in the States are Joel and Madeline Foster. Growing up in Cape Town with the two of them before any of you experienced any of the glitz and the glamour must have been something. Can you tell us a bit about each of them, I mean what is it like to be best friends with the man that Oprah has deemed the ‘most famous celebrity of all time”, “ she said, and Bentley puffed out his cheeks very slightly, trying to decide how to best answer that. “ You know it’s um.. “ he said, running his hand over his hair. He seriously hated questions about the Fosters, especially Joel. Leave the kid alone. ‘ I think the great thing about growing up with each of them is that.. knowing that the opportunities life has given them hasn’t changed either of them. They are exactly who they were five years ago. I think we all sort of.. knew that Madeline was going to be in modeling. She doesn’t understand how beautiful she is, and Joel he’s always.. he’s really a passionate kid. Man, now. He sees something he wants and he works his ass off for it. He’ll do anything it takes and that’s something I really admire,” he offered. Hated answering questions about the Fosters. So much of who they were was dependent on David, and yet there were only a handful of people that knew about him. And it wasn’t his place to blurt out to the world ‘ by the way a large percentage of Joel’s motivation comes from his brother who killed himself,’. Yeah. Not his place.
“ So how did that friendship start?” she asked and Bentley tapped his fingers against his knees lazily. “ Actually we were in daycare. Joel was constantly climbing on stuff.. singing our national anthem, and just basically being an idiot, trying to get attention. And I was always trying to hide places to take a nap. So we just sort of.. got in trouble a lot and decided to just team up. So yeah that friendship started when we were about two or three I’d say. My mum would know that answer a bit better,” he said, feeling like he was being asked a romantic question about Joel. “ Wow, over fifteen years of friendship. Now, was it difficult seeing interviews and public displays of the friendship between Joel and Ryan O’Neil. Is there a bit of a competition there?” she asked and it took everything Bentley had to not stand up and walk away. But he’d gotten used to this – all of his interviews seemed to have a lot of questions about Joel. It was just a fact of life, and he didn’t begrudge Joel any of the success he had. “ I think that.. everyone has different relationships in their life. And um.. you know I don’t know Ryan that well. But he makes Madeline happy, and Joel has a great amount of love and respect for him. Joel being my best friend I could never discourage the idea of him having more loved ones in his life. He deserves every supporter he’s got,” he said while giving a tiny nod.
“ Mentioning the other women you have gotten to know because of Joel, you always got to know the Madison sisters as a result of your friendship with the Foster family,” she said, looking over at him with a smile. “Yeah the Madison girls are great. Some of my favorite memories are from when they would visit over the summers. The first summer we spent together was when I was about thirteen, or so.. and uh it was the only one I got to spend where I wasn’t signed as a professional surfer. Fourteen, I joined a team and.. I just sort of really learned to appreciate the time we got to spend together.” he said, biting the corner of his lip subconsciously. “ Libby Madison in fact just starred in one of Joel Foster’s music videos ‘ As Long As You Love Me’, is it safe to say that the three of you still have the same close connection that you were able to build all those years ago?”. Bentley nodded, “ Yeah, I’d say so. They’re two people that I talk to every day. Libby, bless her.. she wakes up at about six am just to talk to us idiots. We’re very close,” he admitted. “ So close in fact that she is pictured at a lot of your competitions, keeping a close eye on you.. and more than once you’ve embraced her immediately after a good turnout,” she said and Bentley nodded along. Yup, that was all true. “ So is there any chance of a possible romance between you two?” she asked, her eyes lighting up like most girls when they talked about relationships. “ Oh, god no” he said, instantly shaking his head. “ No no no, Libby is one of my best mates. “ he said, hoping that he had echoed that with finality.
“ Is there a special lady in your life then, if not Libby Madison?” she asked, looking somewhat deflated. “ Yeah, I actually have been with the same girl since I was about.. five, haha. Yeah.” he nodded. “ And how does she feel about your closeness with such a beautiful girl?” she asked. “ Oh god, I mean.. there’s no denying that Libby is hands down a knock-out, but we’ve just never been that way with one another. I think if I was walking around saying she wasn’t beautiful that would give Abigail more of a reason to worry. It’s not like I’m hiding anything,” he said, resting back against the chair. “ So is there a reason that Libby Madison is at your events and your girlfriend isn’t?” she asked and Bentley laughed quietly, “ Uh… I think it’s good just to.. sort of keep things separate. Have your own life, that sort of thing,” he said while nodding. “ Has she accompanied you to events before?” she asked and Bentley nodded. “ Yeah she’ll…travel with me. She’s actually here in Hawaii now for this one. Um, I’d say more often than not she stays home though and that’s good for her, she’s got school of her own and I would never want my priorities to become her priorities,”
“ And Joel Foster, he doesn’t come to many of the events either,” she noted, “ No,.. no that’s kind of for a completely different reason. Before he was ..”Joel Foster”, he came to every single one of them. But it came to a point I think that um.. he moved to the states, he started a career. I think he wanted me to be able to sort of maintain what my career had been, and not have to worry about it becoming a circus with his attendance,” he said, cracking the inside of his thumb again.
“ Yet you were seen leaving Taboo Records during a trip to New York. Is there a possible music career in your future?” she asked and Bentley started laughing immediately. ” Absolutely not. I couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket,” he said while still laughing. Jeez, if there wasn’t a story, people would just make one up wouldn’t they? “ Okay so you don’t have the musical talent in common with him, do you two have the same musical taste?” she asked and Bentley laughed again, “ Uh.. he has his moments where he likes listening to the music I like. I listen to a lot of um.. Vampire Weekend, Dream City, MGMT, Hunx and his Punx, Surfer Blood, Matt and Kim, I could seriously go on forever,” he said before quickly adding, “ I do like from the label though um.. All Time Low, and The Maine has some really good stuff, both of their vocals are pretty damn impressive,” he said as he smiled over at her. “ And what about Joel’s music, do you have a favorite song of his?”. Bentley took a drink from his water, quickly adding “ Baby,” he said bluntly before he laughed. “ Uh, no.. my favorite Foster song would be ‘Pray’. I think that… Joel is absolutely the same person on stage as he is off, what you see is what you get. But for the fans that don’t get to know that deeper level of him and what really motivates him and how he sees the world, I think ‘Pray’ sort of.. gives them an inside look to who he is and how his mind views the world and how he operates. There’s a hard working kid underneath all of that dancing and stage stuff that just wants to make an impact in peoples lives,”.
“ And the impact he’s made on your life, have you met any other friends aside from Libby that have become a part of your circle?” she asked and Bentley nodded again quickly. “ Tyler Kingsley is an intern at Taboo Records, though he earned it on his own accord, that certainly had nothing to do with his friendship with Joel. He helps direct the music videos now and puts his input and I know he works on set a lot. He’s also a really great soccer player and uh.. he plays guitar and sings. Skateboards.. That’s uh,… yeah he’s a great skateboarder. Really great. He’s a pretty talented kid,” he said while giving a nod. “ Well we certainly don’t want to take up too much more of your time if you could just for any of your fans out there that might be watching, just walk us through a typical day for you,” she said as she started to bounce her foot. “ Oh man, I think I’m.. the most boring person in the world,” he said with a laugh. “ I guess.. I wake up at about anywhere from three to four a.m. I head out to the beach, catch some of the early morning waves. Head back in around ten, sleep until two.. eat something unhealthy like a pizza or something. Do some research on what the waves are going to be like tomorrow, call Libby or Joel. Or both. Take Abigail out. I sort of just got into motocross, so I like to go out and ride the motorbikes for a while. Go skateboarding. Meet with DC for some shoes I’m designing. Just pray that I don’t do something throughout the day to break a bone, and then uh.. start all over again.” he said, giving a slightly unimpressed sigh of his own. “ Well your hard work is certainly paying off, thank you again for joining us with an interview and also congratulations one last time. We’re looking forward to seeing more trophies in your future,” the interviewer said with a broad smile. “Thank you so much, it was a pleasure,” he said before making his way from the interview. He shook his head as he approached Libby, “ It’s a Foster world, huh?” he said, suggesting that was where a lot of his interview had gone as he spread his arms out wide before wrapping them around her in a hug. Just because this competition was over didn’t mean he could relax, the next competition was just around the corner.
