Roxy held the phone close to her ear as she listened to Giulia on the other end of the line. She took in a deep breath, letting it out slowly as she looked up at her childhood home. “ No, I’m fine. You don’t need to be here. Just.. I’ll give you a call later, okay? Love you,” she said before hanging up and sliding her phone into her back pocket. Roxy blinked, dropping her gaze from the house as she made her way up the steps. The cracks in the concrete usually allowed for some grass to come through, but it was too cold for that now. When she got to the door she knocked at first, before looking down at the handle. She hadn’t carried a key since she moved out, and something inside of her just knew it was unlocked. Roxy tightened her jaw as she brought her hand down and turned the doorknob, pushing the door open in annoyance. Why lock the fucking door. It wasn’t like there was a four year old in the house or anything. “ Baby girl!” she said with a bright smile, dropping her purse down at the side instantly as she leaned down and wrapped her arms around her baby sister. Roxy held her tight, resting her cheek against the inside of her soft, warm, tiny little neck. After a little bit she leaned back, staying kneeled down as she smiled at her sister. “ Where’s mom?” she asked. Emma reached up and pushed her hair away from her face, adjusting the pink boa that was around her neck. “ She said not to bother her cause she’s taking a nap,” she said and Roxy instantly forced a smile. “ Is that so?” she questioned while giving a small nod, knowing already what she was going to walk in on. “ How about you go to your room.. and why don’t you start packing all of your prettiest clothes. You’re going to come spend the night with me, okay honey?” she asked, smiling at the excited little sound of Emma’s feet running down the hallway to her room to collect some of her most prized possessions, which would most likely include her stuffed Minnie mouse doll that she slept with every night.
Roxy stood up instantly, her expression changing from love and admiration for her sister to instant loathing and hate as she made her way down the hallway. When she reached down to the door handle she slammed her hand in frustration against the door. Of course it was locked. Leave the door open to the front door so anyone can come take your daughter, but leave your bedroom door locked. Roxy tightened her jaw and scrunched her nose up as she took a slight step back from the door and then jammed her whole side into it to knock it open. “ JESUS,” she said, wincing at the pain that shot through her arm and looked down at it to check for any bleeding. When she finally looked up she saw her mother passed out on her bed, a sight she’d seen too many times growing up. Roxy took a few lengthy steps over to her, evaluating the scene. Roxy brought her hand up, pushing her hair behind her ears before she picked up a few of the orange bottles, reading what was on them. Oxycodone, oxycoton, Percocet. “ Awesome,” she said beneath her breath. And to wash it down with? Roxy picked up the water bottle, bringing it to her nose before she took a sniff. Vodka. Roxy threw the bottle down, letting what little was left spill onto the floor before she kneeled over her mother in the bed. “ Wake up!” she screamed, slamming her hands against her arms. “ Mom, wake up!”. The sad truth was that at this point in her life, Roxy could give a shit less if her mom died if it was just her. But Emma was too young. She needed a mom, someone that was actually going to be around and not abandon her. “ Mom!” Roxy urged again, this time, slapping her hand across her mother’s cheek to try and wake her from her own stupidity. “ God damnit,” Roxy said, running her hand across her face before she crawled off of the bed and picked up the phone, dialing 911 so she could call for an ambulance.
Roxie paced the room with her hand on her hip. She couldn’t just leave with Emma and let the paramedics find her. If they had questions she needed to be there. But she didn’t want Emma to see this either. “ My four year old sister is here. Please don’t use the lights on the ambulance, or the siren. And when you’re loading my mom up try to be discreet about it and I’ll try to take care of the rest,” she explained towards the end before hanging up and going towards Emma’s room. The pain in her arm still lingered and she bent her arm back and forth, trying to get it to work itself out before she opened the door to Emma’s room. “ Hey sweetie.. how is the packing?” she asked with a smile as she came into the room and closed the door behind her. “ We have to make a little pitstop on the way home, okay? We have to take mommy to the doctor,” she said as she came over to look over what Emma had packed up in her hello kitty suitcase. “ Is mommy sick?” she asked and Roxie watched her silently for a few moments before placing a soft smile on her lips and kneeled down. “What’s your favorite fairy tale?” she asked and Emma widened her eyes, “ I can’t pick just one,Rox” she said with seriousness in her eyes. Roxy made a serious expression, nodding, “ You’re completely right. What was I thinking?” she asked before sighing dramatically. “ Well you must be familiar with Sleeping Beauty then,” she said before she stood up straight and walked over to the small vanity in her room. “ Do you remember how Aurora was sleeping until a handsome prince came and kissed her?” she asked, picking up the plastic crown before she turned to look at Emma. “ Mommy doesn’t have a prince,”. Roxie gave a quiet laugh, “ Well girls that don’t get princes, get doctors. So when we see mommy she’ll be sleeping. Just like in the fairy-tale. And the doctor is going to make her all better,” she said, placing the crown on Emma’s small head. “ Is he going to kiss her?” Roxy narrowed her eyes and smiled, “ Only if he’s a frog,”. She heard the opening of the front door and her eyes flickered to the bedroom door before she brought them back to Emma. “ Remember.. she’s just sleeping. So there’s no reason to be scared, I’m here with you, okay?” she asked before she stood up straight, offering her hand out to Emma’s.
Roxy picked up Emma’s suitcase with her free hand, making her way out of the room. At least they had missed the paramedics making their way to her mom’s bedroom. “ Arm out, princess” Roxie commanded with a wink at Emma as she leaned down to help her put her jacket on. Once it was all zipped up, she looked up in time to see that they were escorting their mother out on the stretched. Roxy stood up straight, holding Emma against her hip as she pulled up the handle of the suitcase. “ Wait! Hold it!” Emma said and the paramedics looked over at Roxy before looking at the small girl. Roxy held onto Emma tightly as Emma kept her legs wrapped around Roxy but leaned down to the stretcher. Her small hand reached up, pushing hair from her mothers face before she leaned down to give her a kiss. She sat up, determination in her eyes and a line of concentration in her eyebrows as she watched her mother. And as Roxy watched her sister she felt her heart crush in that moment. How could her mother be such a stupid bitch. “ I thought it might work,” her sister said quietly, resorting to resting her body against Roxy’s. Roxy instantly wrapped her arm protectively around Emma, and kissed the side of her hair, doing everything possible to stop the tears that were coming to her eyes. “Okay, let’s go see mommy off and then we’ll head home, okay?” she questioned, giving a nod of her head to the paramedics.
Once they were outside, Roxy quickly hailed a cab, telling them to follow the ambulance that was still loading up her mom. She turned in her own seat, making sure that Emma was all buckled in and safe before she buckled in herself and wrapped her arm around Emma. Roxy turned her head against the seat, looking down at her sister as she brought her hand to the little girl’s hair and twirled her fingers through it. Her mother couldn’t keep watching her. But could she really watch her on her own either? She would do it in a heartbeat, would give up anything. Emma deserved more than what she could give her, but maybe she could give more than her mom was. She definitely could. But could someone else give her even more? She took in a slow breath before she tried to not think about it, not for right now.
When they got to the hospital, Roxy gave the address to her apartment to the cab driver so he could take Emma’s things there. Her neighbor had agreed to come down and pay for the cab and get her things so Roxy could pay them back when she got home. It was just more stuff to worry about. She held onto her hand tightly as they went inside so she could sign some of the insurance and paperwork for her mother. “ Look,” Emma said, tugging on Roxy’s hand , “ Another princess,” she said, pointing at another woman who was motionless on a stretcher coming into the ER. The nurse behind the counter gave her a questioning look before Roxy leaned down and picked her up quickly to try and distract her. “ Guess what,” she said, wiggling her eyebrows. “ I hear this place has some kickin’ ice cream. And you can even put gummy bears on it..” she said, looking over at the nurse behind the counter. “ Yeah! Do you mind if I take you?” Emma looked at her skeptically before Roxy nodded with a slight smirk, tilting her head to the nurse. “ Go ahead,” she said, placing her on the floor. “ You have to hold my hand,” Emma said quietly, reaching her little arm into the air. Thank you, Roxy mouthed to the nurse before she started to take her jacket off immediately and headed into the small room. “ That’s so nice of you to do this for your mother,” the male nurse said as he tied the tourniquet around Roxy’s arm so he could take some of her blood. “ I’m not doing it for her,” she said, crossing her legs as she looked down to watch him place the needle in her arm.
Roxy shook her foot in annoyance, having a phobia of needles really didn’t help this situation. Not to mention every part of her wanted to talk to Giulia. And Michael. But she knew her focus had to be on Emma right now, so when the nurse finished up, Roxy held the gauze against her arm and bent it upward so that it would stop bleeding. “ Thanks,” she said quickly, scooping her foot through the handle of her purse before she lifted it up, taking it in her free arm before she shouldered it and made her way out of the small patient room. When she got into the hallway she found Emma with the nurse and her ice cream. “ Oh you have better saved me a bite, princess,” she said as she kneeled down, opening her lips wide so that Emma could place the spoon in her mouth. Roxy looked down at her arm, making sure it was okay, before she scooped Emma back into her arms and stood up straight. “Time to go home, your carriage awaits,” she said whimsically as she brought her sister out of the emergency room, leaving their pathetic excuse of a mother behind.
There were only so many Disney songs you could sing to occupy a four year olds time, and Disney channel was on with the volume ringing in the living room, toys spread out on the floor, dinner on the stove and in the oven. But there was a knock at the door and Roxy froze for a second, looking down at her phone. Nothing from Giulia or Michael. “ Emma,” she said, wiping her hands off with the towel before she placed it on the counter and made her way out of the kitchen. “ Sweetie, go to my room and shut the door. Don’t open it unless I say to, okay?” she said, giving her a kiss and waited for her to turn and run away to her room. Roxy stood up straight again, making her way to the door. When she looked through the peephole she felt nauseous instantly, closing her eyes as she tried to force herself to breathe evenly. “ Open the door,Roxanne,” the scruffy voice said on the other side of the door. “ I’ll call the police,” she said, feeling her voice shake slightly. Way to sound strong, Roxy. “ You won’t do that. Emma needs her mother, you won’t take that from her. Same song and dance for the past year Roxy. Open the door,.. or next time we’ll let ourselves in the front door when Emma is home,”. Roxy froze again, staring at the door. What was she supposed to do? Everything seemed like the wrong idea. But the chain was on, so Roxy opened the door far enough to see his face. “ Maybe it’s not the police you should be worried about” she said, thinking of Vinny and his family, hell all of Giulia’s family. But she barely had any time to speak as he reached his hand in and grabbed her by the hair, bringing his foot up to kick the door open. The latch busted off the door, falling to the floor as it skid a few feet before he busted the rest of his way in. “ Your mother owes us a little bit of money,” the dealer said and Roxy winced, trying to pull away from his grasp. “ I don’t have any,” she said, trying to pray his hand from her hair. “ I thought you might say that,” he said without any infliction, taking his grip in her hair and pushing her body towards the wall where he hit the side of her head against the frame, causing a small gash to hit her cheekbone and start to bleed only slightly. The ringing in her ears was instant and it took a moment for her to gather her surroundings before she felt his fist against the same spot on her cheek, clashing against the already raw skin. There wasn’t any point in trying to fight him, she wasn’t Vinny, it wasn’t like it would get her anywhere. So instead she tried to ignore the ringing pain, the numbness in her ear as she stumbled to where her messenger bag was, taking whatever money she had out before she threw it on the ground by his feet.
There were words that were said, but honestly she was so worried about Emma and what he might do, that it wasn’t until after he left, promising to see her again soon if her mom kept up this habit of not paying, that she noticed he had left. The silence in apartment surprised her, noticing how with each breath the bangs in front of her face moved away from her eyes before falling back over them. Roxy cringed finally pushing herself up straight before she turned to see Michael standing in the doorway.
