Addison smiled at the woman sitting next to her in the waiting room. All the women here looked so calm and relaxed. Her on the other hand, she was shaking and sweating. Addison cleared her throat quietly as she shifted in her seat and crossed her legs. The quiet waiting room had the sounds of nothing but the clock ticking, fingers tapping on a keyboard and the occasional cough or sigh. Addison felt like she was going to go crazy sitting in here. Luckily the door opened and she was the next one called, “Addison?” She smiled, got up and made her way over to the nurse. “How are you today?” the nurse asked as they made their way over to the scale. “Not too bad.” she said as she took her shoes off and stepped up in the scale. She had gained some weight which was the weird part. Nothing in her diet had changed, if anything, she was eating less and working out more, when she had the time. In reality, her days were too busy to eat, she missed meals most days. ”Okay, you can step down now.” Addison picked her shoes up and slipped her feet back in and followed the nurse into the exam room. “If you would, get up on the table have a seat.” Addison crossed her ankles and let them sway gently as the nurse got her clipboard ready. “I’m just going to take your temperature and blood pressure.”
“Okay everything looks good. If you could change into this, the doctor will be in shortly.” Addison pulled off her shoes and placed them gently on the chair next to the exam table. Stepping out of her shorts, she placed them on top of her shoes and quickly pulled her shirt off, putting it with the other items of clothing. She quickly had the gown on and was back up on the table when there was a knock on the door. ”Come in.” she peeped. “Good afternoon Addison, how are you today?” All Addison could do was smile, the doctor had to know exactly how she was feeling. She went through things like this everyday all day. “I have a feeling I know, but I need to ask you anyway. What brings you in today?” Addison swallowed and looked over to her, “I think I’m pregnant.” “When was your last period?” “Um, about two and a half months ago.. I think.” The doctor came over and put her hands on Addison’s stomach, “Have your breasts been tender?” “Yes, very. I never really noticed because I’ve been so busy with everything.” The doctor placed a sheet over Addison’s legs and then brought the ultrasound machine over next to the table. “I need you to lay back, keep the sheet over your lower half and let me see your stomach.” Addison did what she was told and held the gown up off of her stomach. “Just a heads up, this is going to be cold.” “Oh, very cold.” Addison said with a small laugh and the doctor laughed along. “We’re not going to see much, but we will be able to see if you’ve got something cooking in there. Just keep your eyes on the screen.” Addison’s eyes were locked on the screen, she wanted, no needed to see something, anything. After a few moments the doctor stopped, “Oh, you see that?” she pointed to a little blip on the screen. “A baby..?” Addison asked slowly. “It is. Are congratulations in order..?” Addison was quiet for a while and then the tears started rolling down slowly. “I hope these are tears of happiness.” the doctor said as she rubbed Addison’s arm gently and helped her sit back up. “They’re mixed. I’m happy and shocked and scared…and I just…” “It’s okay. Everyone feels like this. The happiness will take over.” The picture printed out and the doctor handed it to Addison, “Here you are. You are about nine weeks pregnant. I’ll need you to stop by the desk on your way out and make another appointment with me in about a month and a half to two months from now. Okay?” “Yes…” Addison couldn’t take her eyes off of the picture in her hand, she didn’t even realize the doctor had left.
The entire ride home, Addison’s mind was racing. How was she going to tell Andre? How would he react? Would he leave her? No, don’t go there Addie. That was her biggest fear. Andre was the best thing that has ever happened to her and losing him would kill her, especially now at this time. As she pulled into her parking spot, she cried a bit more. After composing herself, Addison made her way up to their apartment. She opened the door and called out, “Babe?” she was so hoping he wouldn’t be home. It gave her more time to think how she was going to tell him. There was no answer and she quickly closed the door behind her and relocked it. Now she had to think. Was she going to come right out? Or build up to it? Addison made her way into the kitchen. She placed her purse on the counter, the picture still inside. She opened the fridge to grab a bottle of water when she heard keys in the door. Andre was home. Addison closed the fridge and just rested her forehead against it. She closed her eyes as she heard him make his way through the house into the kitchen, this was it.
