“ Should I wear the red shoes or the nude shoes?” she questioned loudly so that Mackenzie could hear her down the hall in her room. Blake had already slightly managed her curls. Well, she had tamed them and then placed a clip in the back so her hair was halfway up, and out of her face while she was cooking and baking. Some of her and Mackenzie’s friends were coming over for dinner, and while she didn’t see it turning into a habit, it had happened a few times before already. Riley, Shane, Kat, Logan. A spare few here and there. It was nice to just sort of feel like you could have a ‘family’ type dinner, when they were all trying to grow up and figure out who the hell they were..aside from their families. But in a weird, twisted way… these people felt like her family. Blake hummed quietly to herself, smiling as she thought about the day spent in the studio today. Logan had been so helpful, and kind. It was such a relief that she was finally being able to form a relationship with him. Even more surprising, when Riley came over, he seemed to have matured a lot over the last few months. Probably part of his attempt to woo Mackenzie. Plus, she couldn’t wait for Shane to get there so she could go over the track that her and Logan had worked on today ‘Sparks Fly’.
Blake looked in the oven checking on the lasagna. So far she had lasagna, ravioli and a chicken scampi on the stove for main course options. Other than that they had a salad for starters, as well as bruschetta. For dessert there was tiramisu. Apparently she was going with a huge Italian theme ; which was another reason her alcoholic beverage of tonight was that of the sangria type. She had two options ; red wine sangria, or her favorite the white wine peach sangria. Blake combed over the final details of the food, knowing that it would be about a half hour before everything was finished. “ Do you think it’s enough?” she asked, placing her hands on her hips as she looked around the kitchen before directing her attention towards Mackenzie. With the ring of the doorbell she went into a bright smile. “ Do you think my outfit is okay? Do you think he’ll like it?” she said, her smile deflating instantly. “It’s not the type of dress that Scarlet would wear…” she said almost sadly before making her way towards the door. But when she opened the door, it was Shane there first. Normally it wouldn’t be wise to expect him early for anything, but Blake had chalked it up to two things ; he was probably high, so he was probably hungry. “ Ciao cara” she said, holding her arm out to one side, with her other hand holding her sangria, engulfing Shane in a hug.
“ Logan and I worked on this song today and before we get to eating, I really really want you to hear it so I can get your input,” she said excitedly, taking him by the hand before he could even take his jacket off and was pulling him towards the living room. “ Here, be fancy for tonight. Have some sangria instead of beer,” she said, placing her glass of sangria in front of the coffee table by Shane as she sat down on the ottoman. Blake pushed her hair off of her shoulder and took her guitar, placing it in her lap after she crossed her legs. She bounced her foot to start the rhythm instead of counting off 1,2,3 and began to strum the chords. She was maybe halfway through ‘Sparks Fly’ when she looked up from her guitar and saw him standing there. But instead of stopping the song, Blake couldn’t help the infectious smile that was spreading across her lips as she sang the song that they had been working on earlier in the afternoon. Well, Shane’s input could wait, because as soon as she put the guitar down, she jumped up and made her way over towards the highschool prom king turned one of her closest friends. “ Think it’ll work as well as Love Story and Tim McGraw on stage?” she asked, wrapping her arms around him in a hug. How was she friends with this guy? How had he noticed her? Now, to be fair. She had spoken to him more than a handful of times in highschool – but that had always been an uncomfortable, I don’t believe here, you’re gorgeous and I’m a nerd, situations. She still felt like a nerd and was undeserving of perhaps him. But she did feel more confident in her skin. She wasn’t just a highschool girl trying to make it in the industry anymore. Her name had weight to it. Who she was mattered to somebody.. she had gotten past the horrors of high school and the pressure that had come along with it. And she never would have dreamed that when she came out on the other end, that Logan Renner would be working in studios with her, having meals.
Maybe she was flirtatious, but she didn’t see it that way. It wasn’t her fault that every time they were around each other she couldn’t help but break into a mega-watt smile. She couldn’t help that she felt the need to touch him by adjusting his shirts or hair, or touching his arm. They were friends, friends could do that. It just so happened that her friend was insanely hot. And that he gave her these insanely hyped up butterflies in her stomach. Like now, watching him, her stomach was all a flutter. It was the kind of butterflies that made you hope for the next time the person smiled, or that the sound of their voice saying their name kept you up at night. “ Oh! I have your sweatshirt, still. You left it in the studio earlier,” she said, folding her hands together in front of her body before she looked around. “ I’ll get you some sangria and let you guys talk,” she said with a smile, going to the kitchen to get Logan something to drink. When she got into the kitchen she realized how warm she felt ; like a nauseous sweaty feeling. Blake took her cardigan off, fanning herself quickly before she filled a wine glass with sangria and brought it back to Logan, leaning from behind him as she held the glass in front of him. When she walked away, she ruffled her fingers through his hair, shaking it out before she made her way back towards the sound system so she could put some music on.
