Kenzie looked around the banquet hall, trying to find Brayden. But every time she spotted him, someone was pulling her aside. “ You and your sister have done an amazing job. Hot house is just..pure gol We can’t wait to see what you come up with next.” Kenzie gave me an exhausted smile, still looking over her shoulder for Brayden. “ oh, Emma is over there. All of the talent is hers really, go congratulate her,” she said, turning and hurrying away, “ Oh, thank you!” she said, waving lazily as she turned on her mission to go find her best friend. She paused, doing a double take as she spotted Daniel. He had backed off of the whole ‘hey let’s sleep together’ thing, once she pulled out some crap about saying she wanted to wait for marriage. She didn’t want to wait for marriage. She wanted to wait for Brayden.
Hothouse itself had been a journey and a struggle. Daniel had assumed all along that the song was about him, but there was something stirring inside of Kenzie that she had refused to acknowledge for the longest time. The song itself seemed to be a manifestation of both Daniel and Brayden, about the love she was trying to leave behind because of the love that had always been in her heart, the one she wanted to chase after. Yet, here she was still in highschoool, trying to figure out what she was going to do with her life. But just because they were in highschool, she felt like herself and her friends, Brayden especially, were so much more mature than that. Sure they liked to goof off and avoid responsibility, but they’d lived lifetimes in their short amount of years.
Kenzie spotted Brayden once more, but was pulled away again by someone else. All she wanted to do was talk to him, tell him all of these things she was feeling, that she was starting to recognize them. There was a mixture inside of her, fear that he would reject what she was feeling, and yet this overwhelming need to tell him. She was open to him about everything, and now that she knew she loved him, it wasn’t something she could keep to herself. Not just loved, but was in love. An overwhelming, overpowering, desperate need for him to know how she felt, how she was realizing she always felt. “ You need to stand here, Kenzie,” one of the workers at the party said, leaving Kenzie staring at her with a slightly confused expression. She was still looking over her shoulder for where Brayden had disappeared off too, when she heard Daniel’s voice talking into a microphone.
“ Welcome everyone. This is a really exciting night for the Renner girls. Kenzie and Emma, I know that I am one of the many people that is very proud of you. Congratulations on such a beautiful song and video,” he said, lowering the microphone for a moment so that people could clap for the sisters. Kenzie caught Emma’s eyes, giving her a smile. She would go over and talk to her but it looked like the Bryan’s boy had finally gotten up the courage to talk to Emma. Kenzie lost focus for a moment, lost in her own world of thoughts about whether or not Emma would go toward those advances or not. “ There is however, one thing I would like to do this evening if I may take just one more moment of your time,” Daniel had said, causing Kenzie to take in a deep breath and look back toward him, agitated that she wasn’t able to control the evening the way she wanted to. Where the hell were her parents anyway?
“ Kenzie Renner.. I know that we’ve been together for a little less than a year now, and I know that you’re graduating this summer… You’ve accomplished so much in your life, and every one here can see that you will continue to accomplish amazing things. I would like to be a part of that, I would like to stand side by side. Grant me the honor,… become my wife. Kenzie Renner, will you marry me?”” he questioned. There was a complete silence that overpowered the entire ballroom, the only sound you could hear was the shuffle of some of the girl’s dresses. Kenzie only noticed then that she had stopped breathing, forcing herself to take in a few deep breaths. She couldn’t even move, frozen in place as she kept her eyes locked on Daniel. She licked her lips, swallowing hard as she realized that she needed to say something. She didn’t need a microphone, it was dead silent. Whatever she said would be heard by everyone in the room. “ I’m in love with Brayden Madden,” she said unapologetically. Kenzie looked slightly taken aback as she said it out loud, considering this was the first time she had actually said it out loud. A huge smile lit across her face, which she realize was wildly inappropriate. “ I’m sorry, I shouldn’t be smiling, it’s just.. I am in love with Brayden Madden, I am so sorry… “ she said, placing her hand on her chest before she took a few steps backward, turning on her heel to try and go find him. At the opening of the hothouse video there was a line she spoke ‘ it takes a long time to know someone, my mama always said… get out when you can”. That sentence spoke to both Brayden in the sense that she knew who he was, and to Daniel in the sense that she needed to get out. Daniel had no idea that he had given her an out, and the only thing she needed right now was to find familiar arms.
