Blake looked at the cut off jean shorts and hoodie that she adorned in the reflection of the mirror. She’d seen a picture from her and Logan’s engagement, and tucked away in the back of her closet was the outfit she had worn that evening. Which she was wearing now. She looked up at her hair, wild, curly, untameable since she had left the product out and took in a nervous breath. Logan Renner was downstairs in their kitchen taking care of their daughters, and she was about to ask him on a date. Mackenzie had already agreed to watch the girls for the evening; in return she would watch all of the kiddos the next weekend. Tour was about to start off, and while she was nervous about that, something more nervewracking had been tearing into her thoughts. She was falling for her husband. And this, it felt so different than high school. She’d been so unsure in high school if he even noticed her. But now? He noticed her. And the butterflies in her stomach came from the fact that she finally realized that all of her dreams came true, and she was still in love with him. He was still the man of her dreams, that hadn’t changed. It was a matter of accepting her feelings for him, and right now? She was wildly enamored with him on the brink of childlike bliss.
Blake twirled the wedding ring around her finger. She didn’t wear it at home often, since their relationship was in such a strange place. But she wore it today, it seemed fitting for the outfit and all. With one more deep breath, Blake pushed her hair from her face. “ You can do this,” she said, looking down at the band aid on her finger. Okay, maybe not everything had changed. But this time she had cut her finger while cooking, whereas in high school the bandaids were from her guitar. Blake bit the inside of her cheek, deciding it was now or never as she made her way downstairs into the kitchen. A swarm of butterflies flew around in her stomach as she entered the kitchen, sweet laughter filling the air as Logan and Kenzie worked on sundaes together. “Noooo, Daddy. You’re fat. Save these for Brayden,” Kenzie mused to Logan, laughing beneath her words. “ Oh, I’m fat? Mommy doesn’t think I’m fat,” Logan countered back to her. “ Yyyeeaaahh, but she also thinks you’re funny, so she doesn’t get you. You’re fat, daddy.” she said, reaching for his sundae. “ Hey..” Blake said, offering a smile as she interrupted the conversation.
A flush came to her cheeks as she looked down at her fingernails which were pressing into the counter. “ I thought..” she said, smiling with a shake of her head. When she looked up, she was certain that her face was more red than it had ever been. “ I thought that maybe you might want to… go for a walk , later? Mack said she would watch the girls when I asked her and I just thought.. you might… You might want to spend time….with me.” she said, lifting her eyebrows up hopefully. “ I .. I um… I was going to make a basket. Of uh..” she said, laughing and covering her hands over her face. “ I’m sorry, this is mortifying for me.. um… I’m asking out Logan Renner..” she said, exhaling slightly before fanning herself very slightly. She was asking out Logan Renner. She had sold out tours, broken records, become everything she wanted to be. She KNEW she could ask out Logan Renner; it was the meaning behind it that was catching her off guard. “I like…. How I feel… around you. I think I like you. I think … I .. I think we should go on a date. For us.. and not for like.. a premiere and for everybody else to see our picture. But I want to go on a date, with you.. And I want put on a dress, that does the little ..swish,” she said quietly, doing the swish motion with her fingers near her legs to gesture to the swishing of a dress skirt. “And um… I want to ask about your music, family, and friends. And I want to spend the entire evening not worrying about how I am supposed to appear to the public, or how I am supposed to feel about you…. I want to just feel it… And I think you want to feel it, too. So I’m proposing a date…But… try to make sure you know where we’re going, because if you keep looking at me like that I have no choice but to get lost in those…. Eyes.. that see me as something far more than I am,” Blake said, lowering her hands from the counter. “ Wait a minute…” Kenzie said, looking between them. “ Where’s Brayden gonna be?’ she asked, putting another spoonful of ice cream in her mouth. “ We gotta talk about that, dad.” she said matter of factly, as though it could be negotiated. “Oh my gosh, take her to Applebees. They have the best fries. “ she continued, though talking to herself. “Daddy I’m going to go facetime Brayden to tell him we’re getting fries.” she said, lowering herself from her chair before running toward his office to get his phone. Blake watched Kenzie run off before looking back at Logan and offering a weak smile. " Do you... Do you remember the last time we kissed?" she asked, blushing again as she tried to stare at him. " It's just.. the idea of kissing you, sends me into a spiral of daydreaming. But I'd like to think that they became...habitual. Like they were a part of our routine, and we didn't even think about it. Like it was the sort of kiss where you just assumed you'd get to kiss me again, that it wasn't our last,... I think in high school the dream was just being noticed by you, or.. making out in a closet somewhere. But I think my new dream is someday just.... you kissing me out of habit, and knowing that you never have to give me a last kiss again."
