Blake laughed while trying to grab the sheet from his hand. “Nononono,” she said through her laughter. “I would never sing that, give that back,” she said, finally reaching the paper from his hands and pulling it away. “ Okay,” she said, pushing her hair from her face as she settled back against his chest and looked over the sheet. But as she read what he had wrote down again, she couldn’t help but start laughing all over again. “Knock, knock” Mackenzie said as she looked in the studio. “Are you guys planning on leaving the studio at all today?”. Blake sat up, looking at Logan before she jumped out of his lap and stood to turn to Mackenzie. “Yeah, we were actually going to come up and see if you wanted to go get lunch,” she said, offering her a quick smile. “It’s 6 pm…” she said as she leaned against the doorway, crossing her arms with an all-knowing Mackenzie smirk. They’d already recorded ‘Better Than Revenge’, but now that Blake was trying to finish up the album she honestly didn’t know what other material to cover. But then it hit her… this new life she was living. She’d never felt so confident in her entire life. She was surrounded by these amazing friends and new opportunities. So with all of that, her and Logan were currently working on her song ‘Long Live’.
So while there were previous songs about Logan that had made her way onto her first album… and obviously ‘Better Than Revenge’ being on her second one, for some reason it felt really therapeutic to have Logan working with her on ‘Long Live’. It was the first song where she felt like she was standing her ground, proud of who she was and where she was at in life, the people that were surrounding her, the walls that she crashed through. “We can take a quick dinner break and then get back to work?” she questioned to Logan hopefully with a lift of her eyebrows. And with that she quickly ran past Mackenzie, giving her a kiss on the cheek before she ran upstairs and toward the kitchen. “ Shane!” she screamed excitedly as she saw him. As quickly as she could she ran toward him, hopping up to hug him so that she wrapped her legs around him. She reached for his hat, placing it on herself as he walked toward the kitchen. “I’m SO hungry. Renner isn’t answering my texts… It’s Sunday night… I’m joining you guys for dinner.” he said casually before she jumped out of his arms. “Oh my gosh we should do that every Sunday,” Blake mused whimsically before taking out a few cookbooks.
It was one of those magical nights, where you could just spend it with friends and loved ones. Blake had settled on pasta to sort of apologize to Mack for spending so much time with Logan. Which meant there was wine, lots of wine. Her limbs were outstretched, one leg hooked on top of Logan’s knee while they all enjoyed mocking Shane and his lack of table manners. Everyone in her life was special in so many ways; Mackenzie had made her feel loved right off the bat. Logan believed in her. But if she had someone that she believed was a part of her spirit, it was Shane. And it was something that could only be understood from one artist to another. Eventually Mackenzie left the house, off to see Riley, Shane had his leftovers and was giving his input on some of the music before he mused about the fact that he was “unwanted” here. Whatever that meant.
At some point in time it became hard to decipher if she was wearing her shirts or Logan’s. Sleep, eat, work, get caught outside in the rain and just laugh before you decide to dance in it, breakfast for dinner, trying her first twinkie, learning to shotgun a beer from Shane, bonfires, dance-offs, her wardrobe starting to change, his neighbors thought they were dating, her label prayed that they would. Everything about Blake was becoming more confident. And it had everything to do with Logan. But it was all of these stolen moments that she got with him. Becoming comfortable in running her hand over his hair, not being embarrassed to dance like a dork in front of him, having breakfast sing-a-longs, and it was insane how affectionate they were with one another in terms of cuddling, lounging,.. it felt like they had no personal boundaries. He was becoming everything she felt a best friend should be.
And then it happened. She looked over her shoulder one day, catching him with that ridiculously beautiful smile. There was something different about it to the point where she turned her back to him again, feeling the same blush rise up in her cheeks that she’d felt for years. Was he smiling at her? A flutter rose in her chest and she took in a deep breath before she tried to think of a change of topic. It couldn’t be.. Could it? Hours later she was running into Mackenzie’s room. “ I think Logan likes me.” she said, standing in the doorway with her hand still on the doorhandle. “Yeah…” Mack said, lifting her eyebrows at Blake. “ I mean, do you think he might?” Blake asked, dropping her hand. “Oh, gee. Maybe.” Mackenzie said giving her a pointed look before looking back at her magazine. Blake walked towards Mackenzie’s bed, turning before she plopped onto her bed and rest with her hands over her stomach, staring at the ceiling. Just like that she was pulled back into high school.
The album was almost complete, spare for a few songs that she wanted to finish. Logan had been at the house for hours, and it was raining cats and dogs. “Drop everything now,” she said, coming into the studio with some freshly baked blueberry crumble before setting it on the counter. The boy needed to eat, she was getting genuinely concerned about him. Her feet were perched on the counter as she scrolled through his phone, shaking her head as she read some of the messages girls sent him. “You’re the type of reckless that should send girls running,” she said through laughter before setting the phone back on the counter.
A couple hours later Blake was happy with what they had recorded and had relented to ordering some Chinese food instead of insisting on ordering it herself. If her outfit looked like it was lazily put together, it was anything but. Mackenzie and herself had spent hours finding the perfect ‘lazy but sexy’. The shoulder of her sweater was perfectly hanging from her collar bone. Mackenzie had ensured that with Blake’s curls being pulled back, that a strand would flow over her face so that it would be inviting to take all of her hair down. She’d chosen a red bra so that the strap hanging over her shoulder on the sweater would be bright. Logan seemed to like red. But what was she really trying to accomplish anyway? The thought of kissing him sent her into temporary paralysis.
When the chinese food arrived she followed Logan upstairs, letting him pay for the food as she stood at the window to watch the rain pouring down. She wasn’t sure she would recognize this version of Blake Parker if she had met her a year ago. “Chicken lo mein,” Logan had said, setting the bag on the counter and started to take things out, including the fortune cookies. “What do you think your fortune is?” he ased before taking a bite of an egg roll. Blake smiled slowly, watching him. You. You beautiful, idiot, you. Blake set her cup of tea down and watched him, so clueless. She held her breath, knowing that she was probably staring at him too long. Get it together Blake Parker 2.0. You were not the same little girl who avoided his eye contact in school. You two had literally slept together in the same bed. What would the new courageous version of you do? Blake squared her shoulders. “There’s been this thing… I’ve been wanting to try ever since I moved here,” she said quietly. Do it. Be gutsy. Surely he’s noticed the confidence growth you’ve had. He doesn’t move his hands away from you when you curl up to him. Blake stood on her toes, bringing her hand up so that it rest on the side of his face. She looked up into his eyes, only long enough to smile quickly before she placed her lips against his, sinking her body against his chest as she tightened her hand against the back of his neck.
