Madeline left the basket of snacks and muffins on the counter in the All Time Low studio. When she had stopped to drop Hayley off with Blake, she’d been given the task of making sure that Shane had these “healthy snack options to keep his creative flow going”. That friendship was so weird. But she leaned down on the counter, scribbling a quick note to Shane about who the basket was from. Not that he really needed to know. She pushed her hair from her face, high off the good feeling of a successful meeting with Logan. Now she just needed to have a talk with Ryan about when they were leaving for Africa.
Madeline stopped to get some of Ryan’s favorite dinner; Panda Express. She thought about making Mexican food tonight because that sounded good. But she also didn’t want to burn the kitchen down. And she couldn’t bring him Mexican food from a restaurant home because Dani would light him up like a firecracker. Holy hell. That was another weird friendship. Madeline made a slight face to herself as she stopped to realize how strange his little friendship was as she leaned into the cooler to select some bottled specialty brews that he liked. She paid the cashier quickly before stepping out into the rain, clicking her heels quickly against the pavement as she made her way toward her and Ryan’s apartment. Blake had hounded them about how much they needed to get a house now that they were a family. But if they were going to be traveling so much, now didn’t seem like the time to look for something. Plus, there felt like something really intimate about this apartment. It had been her sanctuary away from Patrick. It was where they tried to make pancakes together. Or when he would wake her up early to go on roadtrips. Where he endured her fashion shows each morning, and where she could curl up with him on the bench in the kitchen to watch the rain hit the window. Where she and him could build forts together during Shark Week so that they never had to leave the living room.
Madeline slipped into the apartment, letting the keys hang in the door for a moment as she stepped in quickly to set everything down. ” Sweetheart!” she called out, reaching up to take her jacket off and jumping out of her heels. Madeline moved to the door, taking the keys out and tossing them on the table before she started taking out the food cartons. “ Logan said he was totally interested in investing!” she yelled out happily. The next person she was going to need to talk to after tonight with Ryan was Rosie. Madeline opened one of Ryan’s beers for him, before starting to open a bottle of wine for herself. She poured the glass, picking up a beer with her free hand as she went into the living room. “ Sweetheart?” she called out again. She didn’t find him in the living room, but she did find his laptop up and whirring. Madeline narrowed her eyebrows, setting the wine and beer down on the coffee table before she sat down, clicking through the music that was up on the screen.
Madeline’s finger froze over the keypad as she saw the words “Love Yourself- Cover” scrawled upon his recordings. She bit the inside of her cheek, and hesitated for just a moment, before quickly clicking on it so that the music would blare from the speakers. Madeline bit roughly against her bottom lip, placing her elbows on her knees as she covered her mouth with her hands. There it was.. his lazy melodic voice. But as the song continued she couldn’t help but start to smile. This had been the worst journey that she had ever been on. Ryan had been right there, experiencing it in so many ways. His wife’s second brother killed himself. His best friend had left him without a word. His brother was gone. This had been just as hard on Ryan as it had on anyone. But this? Madeline sat up, taking in a deep breath as she listened to his voice singing Joel’s song. She looked up as his silhouette entered the living room. The smile deepened, reaching its way to her eyes as she placed her hands on the couch and stood up. They were in a place of healing. They were going to Africa to make a difference for young children to learn how to positively channel their emotions. They were doing so themselves with work, music, art. There was happiness in their home again, when it had been cold for so long. Madeline laughed quietly, grabbing the sides of Ryan’s face before she kissed him. She took a step back, taking hold of his hands so that she could spin slowly to the music that finally filled their home once again.
