Joel made a face at the drink that Logan had given him. “ You won’t be a kid forever” he had said, telling him that it wasn’t that bad and to just drink it. He gave a small sigh before plugging his nose and starting to drink the horrible green liquid. Hell, whatever Logan told him to do he would. The part he was most nervous about was the interview. Music was in his blood, performing came naturally to me. It was having people interested in him, asking questions, wanting answers that made him nervous. He was just a kid.. who cared what he thought about anything or what was going on in his life. Just enjoy the music, cause he was no one special. At least, that’s how he felt about it. They had dropped his EP a few days before and now Logan meant business when it came to marketing it, getting the entire record to be ready. Joel bounced on his heels before someone came to get him for the interview. He gave a nervous glance in Logan’s direction before he followed the set assistant off to sit with Robin Williams. He smiled as he introduced himself and shook her hand. Just because he was nervous it didn’t mean he had to lose all manners.
Joel took in a deep breath as someone adjusted his microphone and looked up nervously for Logan. He couldn’t help him from this point. He was on his own and he felt like a deer caught in headlights. He shook his hair to the left nervously and rubbed his palms against his knees as he sat back. They asked him to talk into his microphone, but he did it so shyly that they thought something was wrong with it.’Don’t be afraid to speak up’ she said to him before he gave another nervous smile. Most recording artists had interview experience before they landed themselves on Good Morning America. But most recording artists didn’t have Logan Renner representing them, and he was nervous as hell for this to be his first interview.
‘ Welcome back to Good Morning America, we’ ve got one the youngest additions to Taboo Records with us in the studio today,Joel Foser. Joel,it’s so great to have you and I can just tell by looking outside the windows that you’ve made the day for many, many young girls out there. And I’m sure they are looking forward to your performance in just a few moments”
” Oh yeah,it’s a pleasure to be here. There couldn’t be a better way to start off my morning than with a bunch of other people who love and appreciate music just as much as I do,”.
‘Being a part of Taboo Records it would be pretty obvious that your life is surrounded by people who appreciate music as much as you say you do. From past interviews on our shows we know just exactly how close all of you are and we’ve had different artists joke about how you’re one big family. What’s your take on that? Have any of them given you advice regarding fans, the fame that is sure to come, your career?”
“ Man, I can’t even imagine a better group of people to be under the same label, and we are just as close as people make it sound like. I mean it’s probably pretty intimidating to people who don’t spend every day with us but we’re all pretty much open books and would do anything for each other. But uh.. yeah I’d say they’ve all given me advice on different things. Parke-sorry uh,.. Blake Rennershe’s pretty good about telling me to write what I know about because that’s what people will relate to.If I’m real, then they’ll be able to tell. Ryan and Shane are pretty good at just being the most down to earth guys you’d ever know. You spend an hour with them and you have no idea the kind of effect they have on people because it just hasn’t gone to their heads at all. But if I’m being honest the person I’ve learned the most from is Logan. He’s sort of taken me under his wing a lot more than any other producer would I think, and it’s a running joke in the studio that I’m the ‘mini Logan’ following in his career. And uh… no offense to him, but maybe try to outshine him a little. Either way I couldn’t do it without his help. But at the end of the day they each show me you know.. why we’re doing this.
” It seems like they’re all giving you such good advice, who would you say has been the most influential for you, from the start? Even before you were signed to Taboo Records?”
“That’s going to be Logan again. Back in South Africa there weren’t really a lot of chances for me to take when it came to the music scene. My sister lived out here for her work and when I found out she was friends with Logan Renner I sort of.. you gotta take chances in your life. She helped sort of sneak me into his office, we told the receptionist I was someone else just so I could get a second of his time alone. I didn’t want him to sign me because I was his friends brother, so I sort of lied about it a bit but..our first meeting was really, really good.I jumped on his desk while I was singing… haha, he didn’t like that too much but.. I think he’s over it. But uh..no I mean his career was one I always sort of admired from a distance. This singer who took his passion and didn’t think that his talents were being used the way they should and completely reinvented himself. He did what others said he couldn’t do, and not only that but.. he did it better than them. If that doesn’t inspire you to bring the best out of yourself then who are you kidding”.
“ And how would you respond to people who say that you are going to be just a teenage pop sensation and nothing more?”
“ I don’t know why people have to be negative, but I guess I’d have to say to uh… stay tuned. I mean I’m not going anywhere.I’ve got a strong support system. I’m passionate about what I’m doing and I’ve got a coach behind me that is the best in the game.As long as I keep loving what I’m doing, then I’m going to be around. If I ever lose sight of why I’m doing it, who it’s for, why I love it.. that’s when the entire industry will eat me alive and spit me out. The greatest artists today are the greatest for that reason.. they love what they do. They put their heart and soul into it and don’t lose focus of what brought them here in the first place. The music.”
‘ One thing that might change after your teenage years is your hairstyle which has become popular in just a matter of days, it seems like young girls everywhere are already obsessed with the way you flip your hair. There’ve been youtube videos of spoofs, people whipping their hair like you do, have you seen those?”
“ Haha.. ahh no, no I haven’t seen those but I’ll have to look them up when I can. Anyone who says they didn’t have a questionable haircut when they were younger is fooling themselves. There’s really no rhyme or reason to why my hair is the way it is.. but I will tell you that there’s a lot of it. And it gets really hot. And in my eyes. So I sort of have to flip it. I don’t have like a nervous twitch or anything..I’m just trying to be comfortable. Haha, but I guess that’s worth spoofing. Girls like the strangest things…”
‘ Speaking of girls, that seems to be the focus of each of the songs on your EP. Are you drawing from your own personal life?”
“ I wish I could say my love life was as entertaining as my songs, but unfortunately it’s not. Everyone knows what it is like to have those little crushes or to have someone special in your heart. You don’t have to be in a relationship currently to understand ‘love pop’songs. They’re just fun to dance to. I’m just a kid.. if I wasn’t singing about love I doubt anyone would want to listen to me singing about….playing xbox with the guys or playing some hops”
‘ So if there is no girl in your life, would you ever date a fan?”
“ Ah.. I guess I would say that I would never count anyone out because they were a fan.I would hope my girlfriend would be a fan of my music…”
“ Fans aside, do you have a celebrity crush?”
“ Ah..Ryan O’Neil. Haha, um.. no I guess uh.. Dani Cooper. She’s on Disney channel and sings… I’m trying to get Logan to sign her to the label right now but I don’t think he feels like playing matchmaker.”
‘ She’s on our show next week we’ll have to see what she has to say and get back to you, haha. How about musical crushes. Any one in particular you would want to do a duet with?”
“There’s so many talented people out there right now. If I were to do a duet with anyone I would want it to be either Blake Renner, Natalia Richmond, Dani Cooper or… Ellie Ridgefield. They all have really good sounds. I mean, no offense to Kat Sutton. That girl’s amazing and I love her to death and she was the best prom date, ever but.. we just have completely different sounds it would come off sounding forced. But she does have a duet coming out with her boyfriend Shane Madden from All Time Low. So… listen for that.”
“ Speaking of the women in your life, your family is no stranger to media, we’ll say. Your sister is Madeline Foster, newly Madeline O’Callaghan. She’s a Victoria’s Secret Model who snagged herself a New York Senator. That has to make for some interesting dinner time conversations, to have two children be so successful in different career paths. Is it difficult working with her ex after their break up? They went from being one of the most unexpected, yet oddly aesthetic perfect for each other couples to… her being married. Has it caused any tension in the studio?”
“Uh…no,not at all. Ryan isn’t defined by one thing, he’s a lot of things. Yeah he had a relationship with my sister, but he’s also an amazing musician, a loyal friend, a man with a good heart, a creative genius, a child at play. He’s been a part of my family ever since he came to South Africa with my sister a few months back. My dad was hesitant but now they have this crazy insane bond. We all really care about each other and… people make choices in life, right or wrong. Ryan understands that, better than most. There’s not a bad thing I can say about the guy. There’s not a bad thing anyone can say about the guy,”
“It seems like you’re all pretty understanding of your place in eachothers lives. What has been the hardest part of your new life for you to understand? And what are your biggest fears? ”
“Honestly, this. I’m just a kid who sings and for some reason people like it. I’d be doing it even if I was on the side of the street, begging for change. I just never realized that once people liked your music, they would want to know more about you. Answering questions about myself makes me uncomfortable, just because I don’t think I’m that interesting of a guy. There isn’t anything to be known about me that is life changing, but.. I mean I appreciate it all the same. I get a lot more nervous for this type of thin tha performing, I guess the thing I would be worried about most is uh.. losing a bit of my childhood. It’s still important to me to be a kid.”
“ And fears aside, what has been the biggest perk for a teenage boy that is about to be thrust into superstardom?
“ The opportunities.. the people that it’s brought into my life.. The fans that I really hope to connect with in the future. It’ll take me places I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to go and I really appreciate it”
“ Some of the opportunities you’re mentioning, that seems pretty wise for a teenage boy. But there’s been a few instances in your life that have rattled you. We heard a report that said you have a tattoo for your late brother. Do you mind showing your fans that tattoo since it is something that was so close to you”
”You want me to show you my tattoo?”
“ I’m sure the girls would love to see,”
”It’s sort of on my back, so it would be pretty hard to sh-“
“ You’re a young boy, you can afford to show yourself off while you can”
’ Uh…Umm, haha.. I guess? Yeah, here”
“ Oh wow that tattoo was a lot larger than I imagined when they were telling me to ask you about it.Do you regret it at all?”
“Absolutely not, it’s a piece of David that will be with me forever. Not that I’m telling anyone else they should go out and get a tattoo by any means”
“ What is your next step, your plans for the next few months?”
“I’m just promoting the EP right now. Um, we’re working on a lot of rehearsals for performances, so keep your eye out. Wanting to finish up the cd.. if it does well enough, hopefully I can start planning for a tour.
“ What is the moment you are waiting for,to finally look back on your career and say.. this is it.. I’ve made it..”
“I think for any artist that would be to play Madison Square Garden as the headliner. I’d love nothing more than to see that place stacked with my fans, belting out my lyrics and putting just as much of their heart into as I’m putting mine”
“ Alright and more for your fans, before we head out and let you perform.. what advice would you give them if you could?”
“Take a chance, swing at every opportunity you can, take shots. Don’t let someone tell you can’t just because they’re bigger or older.Don’t hold yourself back just because you might be scared that they’re right. Never say never”.
“ Haha alright, good words of advice Joel. It was great having you here with us, the best of luck for your career and we hope to see more of you. We’ll be back after a commercial break and will be tuning in to see a performance by Joel, coming up next”.
Joel exhaled quickly before he stood from the chair and went over to find Logan quickly. “Dude what the hell” he said quickly, trying to comprehend everything he had just said. Done. ” Why would she ask me to take my shirt off? How am I supposed to say no to that?” he was flustered as the wardrobe department was switching out his hat and jacket, right as he stood there talking to Logan. He didn’t understand why people wanted to try and manipulate him, or his words and actions. He didn’t understand why people couldn’t just tune in for the music, cause honestly he wasn’t anything special to find out about it. He started getting pushed towards the exit since the stage for him to sing on was outside and he could see his dancers already lined up. He stopped and stood still as he looked out the people that had come to see the performance. Whywere they all screaming at him. He took in a few deep breaths, it was almost overwhelming and it seemed morel ike they were angry than they were excited. And reaching out to him? Why? Joel swallowed nervously before he headed towards the stage. He just needed to get through one song. One song and he could find Logan
