Natalia sat on the couch in her studio listening to Adele and reading over the lyrics she had just finished. This song was on a personal level with her.It was a quick fix up, but she was able to reach deep down inside and pull out so much emotion for this song. She put everything she had into every song she wrote and you could just feel the emotion when she sang it. Writing songs was one of her greatest attributes. She could pull a song from a few words or just 2 minutes of inspiration. Natalia looked up at the clock and sighed, he would be here any moment. Brian. Natalia didn't know if she was ready to see him or not. He had called her Sunday night and asked if they could get together in the studio, he wrote a song and he wanted her to be on the track with him. Reluctantly, she agreed, but now she was worried about seeing him. Just then there was a knock on her studio door and she looked at Jeff. Jeff got up and opened the door and then walked out as Brian walked in. Natalia felt her heart beat faster and harder as she looked at him. “Hey.” he said with a smile as he walked closer to the couch, “Can I sit?” he asked, gesturing towards the couch. Natalia nodded, “Uh, yeah.” she moved her notebooks an placed them on the floor and then looked back to Brian who was looking at her, “You’re so beautiful.” was what he said. “Um, thank you.” Natalia said as she looked away from him. This was so awkward. “Happy birthday, by the way,” Brian said with a smile. “Thank you. I thought you forgot.” she said with a smile. “Never.”
“So is this how you’re going to spend your birthday? In the studio all day?” Brian laughed. Natalia laughed softly, “No. Just most of it. Got kicked out of my house for the day so I know my parents are planning something.” she smiled and looked down at her lyrics. “Well I’ll keep you company as long as you want me here. And I’ll still be here even if you ask me to leave.” Brian laughed, trying to keep things from getting even more awkward. They hadn’t seen each other or spoke to each other since the day Natalia broke up with him. “So…” Natalia said, looking over at Brian, “I hear you have a solo career now. Changed your stage name to Nick huh?” Natalia teased. Brian laughed, “Yeah, Brian wasn’t suave enough for me. What about you? I hear you’re doing a movie? Great for you!” “Yeah I am. It’s pretty exciting. Much different than Hannah Montana.” Natalia missed that set and her HM family, but this acting in movies was what she enjoyed more. This is what she wanted to do, well besides her music career of course. She looked down at the sheet of paper in her hands and then over to Brian, “Well this is what I wrote after I read what you had so far. I changed a few things up to, hope you don’t mind,” she said as she handed him the paper. "I knew you would.” Brian smiled and then took the paper from her and began reading it. Natalia bit her lip nervously and watched his face as he read the paper, trying to see if there was disappointment or disgust. He looked back up. “Bad? Good? Terrible?” she asked with a nervous laugh. “It’s great. Much better than what I had. This actually makes sense with the song. You ready to go at it?” he asked as he stood up.
Natalia stood up after him, “Yeah, Jeff got the music ready for us and everything. Let me go get him. You can go in and get ready if you want.” She said with a smile. Natalia walked out of the studio and plopped down on the ground next to the door. She took a deep breath and then let it out and rested her head on her knees. Why was this so hard? Why was it so hard to be around him right now? Ahem. She looked up to see Jeff kneeling beside her, “You OK doll?” he asked. “Yeah…no…not at all….but I will be. We’re ready.” Jeff helped her up, hugged her quickly and then opened the door for her, “Thanks man.” she said with a smiled and then headed into the recording part. “Don’t show me up too bad.” Brian joked. Natalia laughed as she picked up her headphones and put them on, “I’ll try.”
After a few hours of recording, changing lyrics and rerecording, they were done. “Guys, we got it.” he called into them. “Yes!” Natalia said with a smile as she hugged Brian. “About time.” he said as he returned the hug. After a few moments, Natalia was the first to let go. “Sorry.” Brian said as he looked down at her. “I just missed the way it felt when I hugged you.” he rubbed her arm softly and then stopped. He walked towards the door and held it open for her. Jeff sat there, watching. Natalia sighed and then walked out and over to Jeff who looked away like he saw nothing. “How is it?” she asked. “It great. Just a few kinks to work out and yeah….” he looked at Brian and Natalia, “You two must be hungry. Go get some lunch. Catch up. I need some time. I’ll call you when it’s done. “”Jeff…” Natalia said looking at him. “Go.” he said, smiled and then put his headphones on. “Come on Talia, I know you’re hungry. I can see it.” Natalia looked over at Brian and smiled, ”I’m starving.” she grabbed her jacket off of the couch and left the studio, Brian right behind her. “Let’s take my car.” he said as they left the building and headed towards the parking garage. Natalia followed him to his car, got in and the looked out the window. Brian drove off and stopped at a red light. “If we have time, we’re going shopping after we eat. I need to get you a birthday gift.” Natalia looked over at Brian, “You don’t need to get me anything.” she smiled. “I know, but I want to. And you know I won’t take no for an answer.” he said as he started to drive again. Natalia smiled, “You got that right. You’re so stubborn.” Brian laughed, “That I am.”
After a quick lunch and some catching up, Brian and Natalia walked down the sidewalk. “So, Ethan, what’s he like?” Brian asked as they walked slowly. “Do you really want to know?” Natalia asked, looking up at him. “No, but I see how you lighten up and how happy you are when you talked about him. I love seeing you like that,..so I’m willing to hear about your boyfriend.” Natalia smiled, “Okay, well I don’t really know how to put him..” “Good..” Brian interrupted her. Natalia laughed and hit him gently, “No, you’re going to listen.” Brian laughed, “Okay, okay. Go on” Natalia smiled up at him and then looked back in front of her as she thought about Ethan. What was there to say about him? Well there was so much. He was just too perfect. Natalia didn’t want to brag about him “He’s a junior in college. He plays soccer. He has a sister, who is my best friend. Claire, you know her. Um, an older brother. He’s not that great of an actor, but shh, we won’t tell him that,” Natalia laughed and Brian did too, “I’m telling. Ethan! Ethan!” he started looking around and yelling. Natalia hit him again, “Stop.” she said laughing. “Okay.” he smiled. “He can act really well actually….for a beginner, MUCH better than other beginners I have worked with….Um..I think that’s the basics.” Natalia smiled. “Okay. He seems cool enough.” There was a silent moment before Brian spoke up. “I can tell he makes you really happy.” he smiled down at her. She smiled up at him, “He does.”
They kept on walking for a bit and then they stopped in front of Pandora. Brian opened the door, “Here we are.” Natalia stood there for a minute and then shook her head, “No, You’re not buying me anything from Pandora.” Brian laughed and grabbed her hand and pulled her inside, “Yes I am.” Natalia smiled and looked at him when they were inside, “Really?” Brian nodded and walked to the counter, Natalia following behind him.
Natalia walked out of the store staring down at her brand new, full Pandora bracelet. “Thank you.” she said as she stopped in the middle of the sidewalk and hugged Brian. “You’re welcome.” he said as he hugged her a little tighter and then let her go. “Come on, I’m ready to hear this song.” The two walked quickly back to Brian’s car and then drove off to Taboo. They both ran up the stairs, laughing and then busted into the studio, scaring Jeff. “Jesus!” he said as he caught his breath. “Trying to kill me?” Natalia and Brian both laughed, “We’re just excited. That’s all.” Natalia said as she sat down on the couch. “You should be.” Jeff said as he pulled out his headphones and then played the song back. When the song ended, Brian and Natalia smiled and hugged each other. “Oh my goodness! It’s perfect!” Natalia said. She walked over and hugged Jeff. As she pulled away, Jeff grabbed her wrist, “Oh my…” Natalia smiled and pulled her wrist away, “It was a birthday present.” “Hmm…” Jeff said as he stood up. “Everything done for today?” Brian nodded his head, "I think so.” Natalia nodded in agreement. “Okay, good. I need to get home. Natalia want me to take you back?” Before Natalia could say anything, Brian spoke up, “It’s okay. I’ll take her home.” Natalia looked at him, "No, you don’t have to. It’s okay.” “You know, that makes more sense. Yeah, Brian, Please take her home.” Jeff smiled, kissed Natalia on the forehead, shook Brian’s hand and then walked out of the studio.
Brian pulled through the gates, up the driveway and parked in front of the house. Natalia sat there, staring down at her bracelet, spinning it around her wrist. “I had fun.” Brian said. Natalia looked over at him, “Me too. Thank you again for my bracelet. Means a lot.” Brian looked over at her. “It was the least I could do…” Natalia grabbed her jacket out of the back seat. “There is something you could do for me..” “What’s that?” Natalia asked. “Hug me one more time. Hug me like you used to..” Natalia looked at Brian and then leaned over, wrapping her arms around him. Brian pulled her in tight and closed his eyes, “I love you.” he whispered. Brian placed a soft kiss on Natalia’s cheek and then slowly let her go. Natalia looked away from him and opened the door and closed it carefully. “Happy birthday again.” Brian said as he pulled away. Natalia watched the car drive down the driveway and then through the gates. She sighed and headed up the stairs to her house.
