It was a few minutes before midnight, just a few before the new year. Gabe had gone out with the gang and he could not understand why Zoe didn't want to go out and celebrate with everyone. The entire evening he kept feeling himself reaching beside himself, looking over, expecting her to be there and she wasn't. And it wasn't very much fun. He knew she was making a fuss about having sex but it was New Year's Eve, didn't she want to spend it with him? Well he did and if she refused to go out then he would just have to stay in with her instead. Gabe opened the door to his own apartment, knowing the door to Zoe's and Felicia's was locked because Zoe was home alone, and set his things down. He wasn't even drunk. In fact he'd hardly drank anything. He'd wanted to go home to Zoe and be sober enough to spend a little bit of time with her this New Year's morning. But he wasn't going to wait til morning, he'd just decided he wanted to see her now. Gabe climbed down the fire escape and through her apartment window, seeing she wasn't in the living room but heard her tv on in her room. As he made his way to her doorway, he heard the tv counting down, Zoe curled up in her bed with a tub of ice cream. 4, 3, 2, ...1. The announcer on the TV yelled Happy New Year, the crowds in time square gong wild. He leaned against the door frame, shaking his head. He'd made it back just in time to ring in the new year with her. "Happy New Year, Zoe."

Zoe stabbed her spoon into her ice cream as she watched some of her friends on the tv, celebrating new years. What a bunch of crock. It’d New Years Eve three hundred and sixty five days from now and she’d still be in the same boat. But she promised Gabe she would back off the sex subject, so she had kept her mouth shut. Felicia looked so pretty in her New Years Eve dress. And Zoe didn’t mean to be a party pooper, she just didn’t feel in a party mood and would rather spend it at home. But it was New York and it was scary, so she wasn’t going to be in the living room in the middle of the night, so she had reverted to watching the show in her room, where for some reason it felt less scary. Suddenly the count down was starting and she tossed her spoon into the container of ice cream. No kiss, no calories. Not at the strike of midnight. Besides, she could kiss Gabe in the morning, it wasn’t like they were never going to kiss again. But just as everyone was screaming happy new years on the television, she heard it coming from the most comforting voice in her life and looked up at her doorframe, offering a small smile as she saw Gabe standing in her room. Zoe set her ice cream down on her nightstand quickly as she jumped out of bed, feigning to tie her robe together and kicked off her slippers before she jumped up quickly and gave him a kiss so that he could be her midnight kiss. “ Happy new year, babe” she said happily before she gave him another quick kiss. “ Be right back,” she said, going over to her dresser. She was wearing a tank top and cotton cheerleading shorts, which wasn’t exactly sexy, but since she’d made it a point to not pressure him, she figured she shouldn’t show off anymore skin than necessary. Zoe took a t-shirt and some of her Victoria secret pink sweatpants before she went into the bathroom attached to her room and changed into them before she shuffled back out in her slippers. She hugged him tightly. “ Thank you for coming…” she said, knowing he hadn’t been entirely pleased with the fact she didn’t want to go. She climbed back into bed before she patted it to gesture for him to join her. “ Do you want some ice cream? I was planning on ringing in the new year with just ben and jerry before you showed up,” she said as she slid her legs underneath the covers and took another bite of her ice cream before she turned the television down so she could hear him. She smiled as she watched him, she wasn’t exactly sure how he defined her, but ever since he said he could call him ‘hers’, she just sort of assumed he was her boyfriend. But she hadn’t said it outloud in fear of making him scamper off. Outfit

Gabe grinned when she saw him, walking further into the room and caught her in his arms kissing her. Definitely worth it if she was this excited to see him. And he had to admit he was most definitely excited to see her too. He'd missed her tonight, he didn't want to spend things like this apart from each other. Zoe quickly left for a moment to change her clothes, which Gabe had to laugh at. There was no gray area with Zoe. She was either all over him or she was making a point to completely cover herself up. Gabe shook his head, but that was what he liked about her. It was all or nothing with Zoe, she didn't half ass anything. Zoe came back out hugging him, "No, don't thank me, it was weird with out you. I'd rather be here with you." he smiled, going over to climb on the bed next to her, "Nah, I'm good. But you can spend your new year Ben, Jerry, and your boyfriend Gabe." Gabe wrapped his arm around her, cuddling in beside her. "You didn't really think I was going to let you spend your new years by yourself did you?" he asked, grinning and leaned down to kiss her. "So," he said, "Got any New Years resolutions? I was thinking about giving up sex this year, what about you?"

Zoe smiled as Gabe slid into the bed next to her and took a bite from her ice cream, nodding as he turned down the ice cream. She did her best to not grin like a complete idiot when he called himself her boyfriend. What would Felicia do. Play it aloof. So instead of keeping the stupid grin on her face she finished eating her ice cream off her spoon and brushed her bangs away from her face with her forefinger and focused back on the television as she laid her head against Gabe’s chest. Zoe smiled, lifting her head up so that she could kiss him after he questioned whether she thought he would let her ring in the new year alone. Of course he was perfect. “ Mmm no, but you let me spend a majority of New Years Eve alone save for the last few minutes,” she said, nitpicking how he had deciding he wanted to see her after partying with his friends for most of the night. But instead of bickering into a half-hearted fight she shrugged her shoulder. “ But it’s better than not showing up at all, so thank you” she said, taking another bite of her ice cream.
Zoe turned her head to Gabe to listen to him as he talked about New Years resolutions. He wanted to give up sex? She gave a nod, holding the spoon in her mouth as she thought that over. Well that was certainly a choice he could make , and it kind of made sense. If he wanted things back to the way they were back in Malibu, well that meant no sex. Instead of really acknowledging what he had said, she simply nodded. She wasn’t going to argue with him about it or make him uncomfortable about how badly she wanted to sleep with him. Even now. I mean seriously, how hard could she bite down on a spoon in order to not pounce the perfect guy in her bed who called himself her boyfriend. “ I think I’m going to give up coke,” she said, knowing that she needed to limit the amount of diet cokes and dr.pepper’s that she drank on a daily basis. “ But I’d also be happy just learning how to start an orange by myself without relying on Felicia,” Zoe took another bite of ice cream before covering her mouth, “ Oh and getting a kiss from my chaste boyfriend every morning,” she said before she smiled at him and leaned over to set the rest of her ice cream carton on her nightstand.

Yeah, yeah, so he'd come back just in time for the count down to midnight, at least he was there. She'd got that right, at least he was there at all. He didn't want to start a meaningless fight with her, he was just glad to be with her now. Yeah, he could have spent the entire evening with her. Should have. Oh well. Gabe looked at her face when he said he was giving up sex for the year and she seemed to keep a straight face. He hoped she didn't think he was serious, because he most definitely wasn't. Yeah, he didn't want to rush having sex with her but goddam, he wasn't going to sit idle all year, not the way she looked all the time, which was very appealing. Gabe smiled when she said she was giving up coke, knowing she meant pop or soda or whatever you called it where you were from, but he aid in a mock serious tone, "I always knew you were an addict. I'm glad you are freeing yourself of your vices." He did laugh however when she said she could learn to peel her own oranges. But Gabe doubted it. Her and Felicia needed each other to do those things. Felicia to peel Zoe's oranges, Zoe to wake up Felicia in time for school. They had a little system, it was cute. Gabe smiled, letting her set her ice cream carton on the bed side table, "Well a kiss from you're boyfriend every morning, that can be arranged. The chaste part however, I'm not so sure. Good thing I was only joking about that." He laughed and rolled over to wrap his arms around her, burying his face in her hair around her neck.
Gabe stayed there for a moment, enjoying a quiet moment with her. He knew she'd laid off the sex subject a lot recently, which was nice because it took some pressure off of him, but he knew they both still thought about it. Like right now. Gabe sat up, sighing, "I'll be back I'm just gonna go put sweats on." He crawled back out the window in the living room and went upstairs finding a pair of sweats and a hoodie to put on and then went back down stairs to a quiet apartment. Gabe went back to Zoe's room but the she'd fallen asleep already. Gabe smiled, reaching over to turn off the tv, covering the room in a dark blanket except for the moon shining through her window and fell ironically across her calm, sleeping face. HE stood there for a moment, wondering if she was really sleeping that deeply, or if she was dreaming, and if so, about what? What did other people dream about anyways? Gabe had some weird dreams, maybe he didn't want to know what other people dreamed about. Instead of waking her, because he figured he'd just let her sleep, he went out to her kitchen to pour himself a bowl of cereal. He sat in silence, eating his cereal with out much thought, finishing off the bowl and washing it out in the sink before drying it off and putting it away. No reason to leave the girls dirty dishes. Gabe stood in Zoe's kitchen, weighing his options. Zoe was already asleep, and let her sleep, right? No use in waking her, she was probably tired. He could just go back upstairs and see her in the morning. But he'd told her he was coming back. And if for some reason she woke up in the middle of the night and he wasn't there, he didn't want her to wonder why he hadn't come back.
Gabe made the decision to go back to Zoe's room. He knew if he climbed into bed with her she'd wake up, and he had decided not to wake her up. So already his decision was contradicting his earlier decisions. But she was home by herself, it was late, and he just wanted to be with her. So Gabe headed back to her room, his eyes adjusting to the dark apartment and quietly went back int her room, sliding under the covers beside her. It was warm under the blankets, much warmer then the winter air outside on the fire escape. Good plan to not go back out there. This was much better. Gabe wrapped his arms tightly around her, knowing she would surely wake up, but then at least she'd know he had come back.

Zoe rolled her eyes at how Gabe teased her about her new years resolution but smiled all the same, knowing he was just being playful. “ Almost all of my vices. Ice cream is the only one I have left,” she said, patting her hand against her stomach. Zoe couldn’t help but smile as he agreed to kiss her every morning and then confessed that he had been teasing her about the chaste part. “ Do you think it’s funny to tease people?” she said, narrowing her eyebrows before she wiggled out of his arms and crawled over his hips so that she was straddling him. She pushed enough hair away from her face and behind her ear so that she could see him before she leaned down to kiss him, nibbling against his bottom lip gently before she moved her lips to the side of his neck as her fingers unbuttoned his jeans . She unzipped them before she quit kissing his neck and smiled as she sat up, “ Good thing I was only joking about that.” she said, trying to mock his tone of voice before she rolled off of him and laid back on her side of the bed. She curled her arms up under her pillow, nodding as he said that he was going to change into his sweatpants before he came back down.
It didn’t take long after he had slipped out of her apartment for her eyes to grow heavy again from exhaustion. She could still hear the celebrating going on through her television but she didn’t have enough energy to turn the television off. But Gabe would be back soon, he could do it when he slid into bed with her. But she had drifted off, and there she was all over again, spending the same night she spent in every dream it seemed like ; the last night she’d gotten to spend hanging out with Gabe before he told her he’d be moving to New York. Every time they hung out after that she felt like she was so busy trying to memorize him, not forget anything, he’d been this thing in her life that could have had permanence, and now he was leaving, so she had to appreciate him each moment they spent together. Ironically, it was still how she felt about him now, even though she was in New York. But it seemed just as quickly as she had fallen into her dream state, she was being woken from it. No sound of the tv, so she’d been right. She smiled at the familiarity of Gabe’s arm and turned to face him, giving him a quick kiss. “ Okay but seriously what is your new years resolution?” she asked tiredly, running her fingers over her eyes. She turned her head to the side as she heard her phone go off and leaned over him once again to take it off of her nightstand before she saw a flood of text messages; Lance, Dani, Felicia, Dex, Kiersten, Joel. All wishing them a happy new years. She read them off individually, including showing him a picture Joel had taken of his segway. And then what a segway looked like when you accidentally rode it into a pool. She laughed, having already moved herself to laying completely on Gabe’s chest. Whatever, she was little, he could handle it.
Hardly ever were they both wearing sweatpants and curled up under a mass amount of blankets, but it was winter and it was cold. And Gabe had come home on New Years Eve to give her the midnight kiss. She smiled as she looked down at him. “ Okay.. I love you,” she said, deciding it was time for them to go to sleep. It wasn’t like they couldn’t see each other all day tomorrow. She leaned down, giving him another kiss before she slid off of his chest and curled up to his side instead. She wiggled to make herself comfortable , laying her head in the crook of his neck so she could still be near his chest and still be near his lips, too. New Years Eve in New York was insane, she honestly couldn’t believe the amount of fireworks going on outside her window, but hopefully they wouldn’t keep them awake much longer.

Gabe smiled though she couldn't see him in the dark, "Sorry i woke you up." Zoe asked him what his new years resolution really was. Gabe thought for a moment before answering, "Um, I think my goal by the end of this year is to figure out what I'm doing with school, maybe pick a major, decide what my game plan is. I mean," he paused weighing his options, "I obviously like dancing but I don't want it to be my work." Gabe let her climb on top of him, checking all her phone messages ans reading them off from their friends. It sounded like everyone was having a good time still. "I don't even want to know how he got that thing in a pool," he laughed, shaking his head when Zoe showed him the picture. It was odd, how the people they were friends with tended to flock together, but he was grateful for it. They all had this support system that you couldn't duplicate. He had things in his life he couldn't duplicate, or at least he didn't think so at the moment. He couldn't replace his friends, the opportunities he had, the place he lived. He couldn't find another girl like Zoe, and that he knew by his own experiences. He couldn't duplicate how he felt about her towards someone else. She leaned down to kiss him and he smiled, kissing her back, "Love you too." And hadn't he always? It wasn't as if he had ever stopped.
And wasn't that the truth. He hadn't. He'd fallen for her so quickly that summer, but he was so sure of it too. Telling her he loved her was so easy, had been so natural. He didn't doubt it for a second. Why should he? And why should they wait to do the one thing they hadn't that showed how they felt. He didn't know. Zoe had snuggled in against him to go back to sleep. Maybe they didn't go back to sleep. Say they didn't. There was always that possibility. Gabe leaned down to kiss her hair, weighing his options before he made up his mind. Gabe sat up, turning on his side to look at her before he kissed her again deeply. Maybe she would change her mind. That would be okay. Gabe had never pressured her before, he wasn't going to start now. But it would be the first time he ever let her know he wanted to, so there was no telling what she was going to do.

Zoe settled back into her lavender sheets, catching a quick glimpse of the moon through her blinds that overlooked the city before she closed her eyes. Outside may have had hustle and bustle, extra noise due to the celebration of the new year, but here in Gabe’s arms just sort of felt comforting. She wondered what he was thinking as he laid there in her bed, what sort of things entered his mind before he fell asleep. No doubt he was the thought for not just her mind, but a lot of other girls, before they fell asleep. But it was nice, having him be the last thing she thought of, and the first thing she got to see whenever he stayed the night over. It just made it seem all the more real, that her dreams – as cliché as it was- really were coming true. She opened her eyes as she felt him moving in the bed and turned her head over her shoulder to see if maybe he needed something, a glass of water, something to eat, anything. But instead she was met with a kiss, causing her to smile against his lips before she settled back, feeling the difference in the way that he touched her.
Zoe felt a slight catch in her throat, unsure of what it might’ve been. Hope, nerves, excitement, fear? Probably all of the above wrapped into a small little chort. It didn’t seem like he had drank that much, she couldn’t even taste any alcohol on his lips, and surely he didn’t think she was attractive right now. She was wearing sweatpants and a t-shirt , compared to all of the other times where she had tried to prance around in little to nothing around him just to attempt to get his attention. Normally she would’ve just started to rip her clothes off, while trying to peel off his layers as well, only to have him gently pull her away. But since the talked they had at the party a while back she had tried to be better. Which meant not stripping down like it was spring break in her room. So instead, she bent her knee up so that it was easier to turn her body towards him since he was laying on his side and pulled herself closer to him.

Gabe kissed her back realizing that when she said she was going to back off, she really was. So now he here was, wanted to sleep together and Zoe was like, lets cuddle. And he'd have to convince her he wasn't just pulling her leg. Otherwise she'd probably think he was just joking. Zoe moved closer to him and kissed him back. He was right, she had no idea what he was thinking. Which really was his own fault. Gabe slid his hands around her, pulling her against him and kissed all the way along her jaw, and down to her neck, kissing her there. Kissing her collar bone. Tangling his fingers in her hair before they explored down to her waist, moving under neath the hem of her shirt and over the expanse of her warm skin. If she didn't know by now what this was all about, Gabe didn't think he needed to explain himself. With out hesitating, he slid her shirt up over her stomach, lifting her up and pulling it off over her head. After tossing her shirt on the floor, e reached up and took his own shirt of too, tossing it too on the floor with Zoe's, why not? Did not need them. Gabe moved back over her, moving his hands over her waist, kissing her neck again before finding her lips again and kissed her softly. They'd gotten this far before, but never with the idea that it might go beyond this point, which was only more exciting as his heart rate picked up.

Zoe pressed her body closer against Gabe as he pulled her towards him. Her work out routine consisted of running, not much. But she really was appreciative of Gabe’s lifestyle, able to feel his muscles through the fabric of his shirt. She closed her eyes quickly as his lips moved from her own and traced to her jaw, neck and collar bone, having to remind herself to breathe. Just because he was kissing her didn’t mean anything, any second now he would pull the brakes. He always did, he was like clock work. Any second now.. But instead his fingers found their way to her waist, staying their momentarily before she felt her own shirt being lifted away from her body. Alright, so usually she was the only one to take her shirt off. Actually, she’d been the only to ever take her shirt off, and that was always right before Gabe would put a halt to things. But it seemed just as quickly he was taking his own shirt off, not leaving her much time to process all of this before he leaned back down and kissed her again. He hadn’t said anything to her, but maybe that was for the best, because she wasn’t even sure she was understanding everything anyways and she sure as hell wasn’t going to say anything to stop him, incase for some reason he were to change his mind.
Zoe moved her body away from him, enough so that she could slide her thumbs along the inside of her sweatpants and wiggle her hips away from them. She almost hated herself for putting those things on, but it had been to prevent this exact thing from happening. Whatever, once the clothes were off, who cared anyways right? Maybe it was best they not say anything, they’d spent so much time talking about it before. Mainly Zoe. It wasn’t like they had anything to confess. They were smart, they knew what this was. Well, he knew what it was a lot more than she did. Zoe closed the distance between them again, latching her fingers against the fabric of his own sweatpants as she placed her lips against the soft skin of his neck. As she pushed her hands down to lower his pants, she also lowered her lips until she was kissing his collarbone, where she gently grazed her teeth as she pushed the pants off over his hips completely.

******************************* There weren't any other times after sleeping with someone that Gabe really knew it was right. Felt good, yes plenty of times. But felt right, Gabe knew this was the first time he knew it did. He wasn't sure how long they had laid there, Zoe resting on his chest. He could feel her steady breathing but eh knew she hadn't fallen asleep or anything. He absent mindedly rubbed her back, brushing the hair away from her face. He didn't think anything would change between them. If anything, things would only get better from here on out. He trusted her, loved her. As much as he could love someone he had only met that summer. But he also knew that he had plenty of time for it to grow. He didn't see either of them going anywhere. For the short time he knew her, he felt like he knew her so well. What foods she liked, what she feared, right down to exactly who gave her that necklace she always wore and for what occasion. Which reminded him. The necklace. And the masquerade. Gabe sighed, leaning down to kiss the top of her head, "Zoe," he said smiling in the dark, "I have a confession to make. But you can't get mad." He laughed, "Remember that masquerade you talked about for the longest time? And you danced with that guy, and he was awesome, and had that whole air of mystery thing going on?" Gabe paused before continuing, "Well. That was me." He laughed, shaking his head, "I knew it was you, you were wearing your necklace, from your brother. I don't know why I didn't just tell you it was me." He hoped she wasn't too mad, he wasn't even sure really why he had hid it from her, other then the fact that it was the first time he had really seen her since she moved there. He had still been trying to wrap his head around the idea that she was there. And that they could have another chance at things. But he kind of wanted to see what her views on them were first. And after putting it off, no time seemed like the right time to tell her although, he was surprised she didn't know it was him... what with the dancing and all.

Zoe adjusted the way her cheek rested against his chest, closing her eyes again before she listened to the faint beating of his heart. It was weird to her, now that they’d shared this experience together, that he would keep it from her. It wasn’t scary, and it wasn’t something that made her want to shut herself off from the world. It seemed as though as long it was with the right person, it felt perfect. Why was everyone so adamant on her waiting? Because words couldn’t describe how amazing this felt, didn’t he want this along? She felt her shoulders tense as he said that he had something to confess after he kissed her on the head. Seriously, wait until now? She sat up enough to be able to look at him, though it was pointless since it was dark, and rested her arms against his chest. The masquerade? Zoe narrowed her eyebrows as she listened to him explain and felt herself being thrown back into that night. “ What?” she asked, slightly confused at the fact that he said it was him. No, it couldn’t have been him, because she would’ve recognized him. They hadn’t been apart from each other that long, and was it possible that he just .. seemed different since he had been with other girls? He had to have been. She wasn’t naïve. He might’ve cared about her in Malibu, but he was still a boy. And a boy who never imagined his ex-girlfriend would be coming to move to New York, no less. She couldn’t blame him at all, she’d done the same thing even after she moved to New York and found out he was ‘dating’ someone. She smiled slowly as she realized, he’d kissed her knowing it was her all along. “ You still cared about me?” she asked before she sat up, kissing him quickly as she held her hand against his jaw.
Zoe stepped off of the bed, grabbing the shirt nearest them before she tugged it on followed by her underwear and made her way off into the hallway. She placed her hand against her chest as she finally had a second away from Gabe. Surely it should be beating a lot more quickly than it was. Why did she feel so calm? She’d been waiting for this forever, with him, and her body hadn’t gone into some sort of shock? Zoe took in a deep breath and sighed, turning into the kitchen before she stopped. She blinked, staring at Dex as he was standing by the fridge, drinking straight from a carton of orange juice and Felicia, checking herself out in the reflection of the mirror. ‘ Heeeey’ Dex said happily, ‘ Happy new year!”. Zoe gave a tight smile and nodded, wanting nothing more than to retreat to her room now. She slid by him, making a face at him for drinking from the carton before she looked through the fridge for some water. ‘ I see you’re sporting that ‘just had sex’ hair that I taught you about, atta girl..’ he said, giving her a small nudge. ‘ But why are you wearing it like that so late at night? Shouldn’t you save it for in the morning?’ he questioned taking another drink from his orange juice. “ I’m sure you’re probably right,” Zoe said, taking two bottles of water from the fridge and shutting the door to do her best to get away from him. She heard the spray of orange juice come from Dex’s mouth before she turned to see it, “ Oh, gross Dex” she said, frowning at him before he pointed at the two bottles of water in her hand and then her hair. And with that, Dex picked Felicia up and practically ran down the hallway to Zoe’s room. Zoe tossed her head back, groaning as she walked down the hallway slowly. When she came back to her room, she shook her head, watching as Dex jumped up and down on the bed with poor Gabe still inside of it, yelling ‘ Happy fuckin’ new year, dude’ as he blew into the party blower and bounced around on the bed. What a drunk idiot.

So Zoe wasn't mad, although Gabe still found it kind of funny that she didn't know it was him. That was okay though, he knew it was her. He smiled and nodded when she questioned that he still cared about her since he kissed her knowing it was her. "Of course I still cared, I never stopped," he laughed. Zoe got up, halfheartedly redressing herself and went left the room, probably to get something to drink. Gabe sighed, thinking he should probably at least put his sweats on too. He leaned over, pulling them off the floor and put them on, deciding he didn't wan to actually get up. He thought about turning the TV back on but didn't really want to actually do that either, but decided he would just wait for Zoe to come back. But instead as he lay there waiting for Zoe, Dex burst into the room drunk, carrying a drunk Felicia who he set down but apparently him carrying her had kept her upright so she laughed, losing her balance and plopped down before crawling over to the door frame and pulled herself back up. Dex was drunkenly jumping up and down on the bed, yelling about the new year and alluding to the events that had recently went on in that room. Dex was still jumping and blowing that stupid noise maker and Felicia was leaning in the doorway, trying to stay standing, when Zoe came in. Gabe looked over at her, shaking his head, what idiot friends they had. "Yeah, happy new years man," he said trying not to laugh before Felicia made her way over, stumbling, but pulled Dex off the bed, "Come on Dex you can jump on my bed if you want. Lets leave them alone..."
Gabe watched them leave the room, Felicia leading Dex out while at the same time using him to stand properly. Felicia stopped in the doorway saying to Zoe, "hey Zo, we'll just talk about this tomorrow. Let me know if all your dreams came true..." she said wistfully and then left. Gabe shook his head, patting the bed beside him so Zoe would come join him again, "We have great friends don't we." He took the bottle of water from her and let her snuggle back in. Things might be a little different now, but only different in the sense that they could only get better. He knew there wasn't any other girl he'd rather be with right now on this new years eve, and only found himself hoping that next news years eve he had the exact same company.
