Joel turned his neck from side to side before he shook his shoulders out and continued to stare at his reflection a few feet away in the large mirror across the studio wall. He was wearing a gray t-shirt, some faded basketball shorts and some definitely worn in sneakers. He looked down at the reflection, spotting the scar he now had across his leg. He clenched his jaw before he licked his lips, hating that part of himself already. Every time he saw it all he could think of was weakness, time wasted, where he might be right now if he hadn’t been so stupid as to have been distracted. “ Start back from the top man,” he said, looking over at one of his team members who was standing next to the sound system. ‘ Maybe we should take a break for a few minutes’ he said gently before Joel threw him a look that told him to go fuck himself. There were two people that he might listen to if they told him to take a break. And he didn’t hear that coming from Logan or Ryan’s mouth right now so this kid could go throw himself off a bridge or what the fuck ever. Joel wasn’t going to do this if he wasn’t going to be the best at it, what was the point? He popped his neck quickly as the music started and then focused back on the mirror image of himself, trying to jump back into the dance routines like he hadn’t been absent the last few months at all. But just as he was trying to reach back and drop down to the ground for a dance move his foot slipped from underneath him and caused him to fall. Joel closed his eyes, laying back against the ground before he threw his legs into the air and jumped off of the ground quickly. “ Again,” he said, shaking his leg angrily as though it was its’ fault. “ Dude..” the kid said mousily as Joel was walking back to the front of the studio. “ Again!” he yelled out, gripping his hand against the wooden stool next to the mirror before he picked it up and tossed it as hard as he could across the studio. Joel took in a few deep breaths, still feeling the anger before he turned around and saw Logan standing at the door of the dance studio. Uh oh, daddy’s home. He stood there, staring at him for a while longer before he felt embarrassed and dropped his eyes down to the ground. ‘Let’s go do some recording’ Logan said finally and with that Joel knew he couldn’t argue. He reached his hand up and ran it through his hair before he quietly followed Logan out of dance rehearsal and out into the hallway to go to the recording studio.
All anger aside, he had a lot to be thankful for with Logan. There was literally basically no one that knew that Joel was awake, and it was all thanks to Logan. His primary nurse, his primary doctor.. they were aware. The rest of the hospital staff was under the assumption that he just switched hospitals again for his own protection. But other than that,.. Logan, Ryan, Madeline and his roommate Lance. That’s it. Those are the only people in the entire world that knew up until this point that Joel was awake. But even Ryan and Madeline hadn’t known until they had gotten back. He wasn’t sure how, but Logan had managed to not tell a damn soul. It involved a lot of blacked out windows in SUV’s, and telling people they couldn’t come to the studio, like today. It was literally him, Logan and a tech or two who could be trusted. Joel just wasn’t ready to let everyone know that he was awake and kicking. And he sure as hell wanted the first people he answered to, to be his fans. Which is why when he heard about these tribute concerts that Logan had been doing with a few others, he jumped at the opportunity to guest appear at one as his ‘debut’ or sorts. The people it was probably hardest to not tell he was awake.. Felicia, Rosie, Dani. They’d be there tonight and he couldn’t wait to wrap his arms around each of them. Felicia was his sister by every definition of the word, he’d basically grown up with Rosie and Dani was just sort of.. Dani. He was excited to spend time with Jake, and to just be able to shoot Shane a phonecall, but he also sort of figured they had handled the situation with a bit more finesse than the girls had. “ Thanks man,” he said, referring to more than just the fact that Logan had pulled him from dance rehearsal.
Joel took in a deep breath as he stepped into the small room with the switchboard and sank into the leather seat, spinning his baseball hat around so that it was on the correct way now. There were a couple of tracks that had been bouncing around ever since he had woken up. And he knew before the concert tonight him and Logan both wanted to finish recording ‘ Never Say Never’, ‘ Born To Be Somebody’ and ‘Pray’. He was still too into the development of writing ‘ Live My Life’, but honestly Logan was sort of taking the reigns over on that one. New Joel , new sound. He leaned back in the chair, looking down at his leg before he traced his thumb over the scar. Even though he hadn’t been awake for any of it, this experience had taught him a hell of a lot. Waking up and everything changing was sort of eye-opening. He had no idea when he was waiting in Ryan’s apartment that when him and Madeline walked through the door she would have a ring on her finger. Ryan O’Neil was going to officially be his brother and it just sort of felt like it was the most obvious thing in the world to happen. That kid had been a part of their family since the first time he shook hands with their father. And he always felt close with him like he was his brother, but if it was possible he just sort of felt closer to Ryan. Their whole family did. Sure, Joel was close as hell with Logan, Jake, Lance, Shane. Those were his best friends in the world.. but Ryan just was sort of on a different level. No sort of about it, he definitely was. Plus, there was just a great amount of respect for the kid that Joel had seeing as how he was going to be taking care of his sister for the rest of his life. Never really felt that for Patrick, but then again he never expected him to actually take care of her. Ryan was quiet, but he was everything Madeline would ever need.
“ Maybe Ryan can bring us some lunch, I’m starving” he said, pinching the bridge of his nose between his fingers before he wiped them over his eyes and looked over at Logan tiredly. Waking up at the hospital had been a draining experience. When you didn’t use your senses for months, and then you were waking up, absorbing light, trying to speak, having conscious thoughts, it sort of wore a kid out. Not to mention that when he had woken up he had proceeded into yelling for Logan, pulling his IV out, making his own life just a general hell for the time being. But he sure as hell wasn’t going to tell Logan that the last few days had worn him out. There wasn’t any time for slowing down or for showing weakness. If anything he needed to work ten times harder, catch up on what he had missed on, prove to Logan that he still deserved this. With that Joel stood up quickly from his chair, break time over kid. Joel went over to the switchboard and narrowed his eyebrows as he looked at the computer screen, finally pulling up the record for ‘ Never Say Never’ that Logan had probably been working on while Joel was in dance rehearsal. He stood straight up, tossing Logan a quick smirk before he fist bumped him and headed into the recording booth. He hopped a few times on his right leg, trying to get used to using it. Dance practice and being a teenage boy was going to be his physical therapy, fuck what the doctor said. But he really didn’t want Logan to know why he was trying to use it so much, so he could get used to it again, which also meant having to hide the cringes he made when it hurt like hell. Joel stood behind the microphone and brought his bottle of water to his lips. He sort of felt like he was new at this all over again. It felt exactly like the first time he stepped into the studio and Logan told him he was going to be something big, that his life was going to change over night. And it sort of was going to, all over again. Once every one knew he was awake again it would be a whole slew of interviews, press conferences, photo shoots. Ain’t no rest for the wicked. And this time he sort of had a different image. New haircut, new Joel, new music. He'd even gone and had someone come in to pierce his ears. Which now that he thought about it, sort of felt irritated. But he wasn’t doing it alone, not that he had before. But this time around, his team actually felt like that. He looked up through the glass and smirked as he watched Logan. He seriously respected that guy more than you could possibly respect someone, and he had the exact career that Joel wanted for himself. But now they were actually family and there wasn’t a single person in the world Joel wanted to work with aside from him. He picked up the headphones before he placed them over his ear and spoke into the microphone so Logan could hear the playback before he waited for thumbs up to go ahead and start recording when the track started.
