Scarlet was bent forward, pulling her knee length boots off before she tossed them to the side. “ Baby!! I need the dress that’s hanging on the vanity mirror” she yelled from the bathroom before she turned her ear to try and listen for if Zach was moving through their penthouse or not. She had spent the last eight hours at a ‘Rock The Vote’ event to get college students excited about voting in the next Presidential campaign.. “Vote Harris” had been the theme. She looked down at the shirt that she had picked about two sizes too small which she had tied in a knot at the side before she smirked in the mirror and started taking it off. Well. She did the event, what more could daddy ask for? Scarlet looked up as she heard the bathroom door opening and smiled instantly, bringing her hand to her bangs as she pushed them quickly behind her ear. “ Hey get back in here” she said, grabbing his wrist before she pulled him against her body and kissed him. She hadn’t ever asked him to really ‘ officially’ move in ever. But you might as well call it as you see it. Not to mention she was wearing the ring ever since France. It just happened to travel across her fingers, never finding one to land on permanently. Scarlet sighed, pulling away from him before she smiled. “ Go get dressed,” she said before giving him another quick kiss, smacking her hand against his butt gently as he headed out of the bathroom. Scarlet puckered out her lips before she turned and looked at the different hair tools on her counter.
Scarlet stopped, bringing her eyes down to the sink so she didn’t have to look at her reflection. Her mother wouldn’t like who she had become, nor would Noah. In fact she wasn’t even sure she liked who she was. But there it was again, the sharp voice of her stepmother in her ear. “ Scarlet, darling. Please. Wearing something sophisticated. A black dress perhaps.”. Instantly a small smirk flashed across her lips. Sure, black dress it was. Scarlet licked her lips, picking up the fabric before she put the dress on, looking down at the neckline which reached her belly button. About an hour later and she had curled her hair to beach wave success, volumized it out, done her make up and was now looking over any last minute details. She was just about to leave the bathroom when she stopped, turning to pick up her mothers ring off of the counter before she placed it back on her finger and hurried out of the bathroom. Scarlet smiled as she saw Zach playing video games on the couch and sauntered her way over, taking hold of him by his tie before she pulled him off of it and kissed him, walking backwards while doing so to the elevator. “ Love you,” she said quietly before stepping foot onto it and letting him take control of the buttons. It was strange to think of how comfortable she was with saying it now. Though, they had been through a lot together. He’d killed people in her name, while she was totally aloof. There couldn’t still be people interested in harming her for the sake of her father, could there? Though, being attached to Zach probably didn’t help her case when it came to enemies. He had his own. Best way to break a mans heart was to take away his play things. Scarlet brought her eyes away from the clutch in her hands and up to Zach as she watched him, feeling the floors rise above them until they reached the bottom. She smiled, moving past him as she made her way out and towards the car that was waiting for them.
Scarlet held her breath as they pulled up to the venue. She would never admit how much hard work it was to pretend like she didn’t care about any of this. Because the fact of the matter was it was all she cared about. Politics is what she wanted for herself. And there was a fine line between destroying her fathers career and destroying the future of her own. She would go to any means necessary to ruin his career, including wearing one of the sluttiest dresses she could find. But she didn’t want it to come back and bite her in the ass either. So much of what she did at these things was mental work, playing a part. She wanted her father elected.. so she could watch him fall. Then when the time was right she wanted to enter politics and do what actual change was necessary. He wanted to help the wrong people, the people that didn’t need it. That’s what he did. He took from people. But he was the likely favor to win the election, and every single one of her friends parents were supporters of him, if not supporters of him themselves because of Scarlet. But still, she watched out of the car window at the reporters that were waiting to get inside and felt a small flutter of nerves. It was hard being a Marilyn Monroe and a Jackie O all in one body. Finally the driver came to open the door and she let go of Zach’s hand, making her way inside.
‘ Oh .. my, my Scarlet” her stepmother said as Scarlet walked inside. “ Little black dress” Scarlet said innocently, doing a small twirl before she placed her hands on her hips. “ Little indeed” she repeated through a tight smile. “ I’ll find your father” she said before Scarlet narrowed her eyes, “ Good girl” she said before taking in a breath and looking over her shoulder. Ah Champagne. “ Thank you” she said to the male server as she took a glass off of the tray and started to make her way through the ballroom. “ Miss Harris!” a reporter called out and Scarlet turned her head before smiling brightly. “ Franklin, hey!” she said before lowering her glass of champagne to wrap her arm around him in a hug. After a while you started to learn their names. “Word is that miss Scarlet Harris is doing a speech in honor of her father tonight” he said with a smile. “ Ah the word is right” she said with a lift of her eyebrow before she smiled. “ Make your way to the front, alright?” she said before kissing his cheek and stepping away again. Scarlet was just tilting her glass back to take a drink when she felt someone gripping her by the elbow and pulling her away. At first she assumed it was Zach but when she turned her expression turned to annoyance as she saw Senator O’Callaghan. “ What do you want, Patrick?” she said coolly before she tilted her head to look at him. “ When is this going to stop” he whispered in a hush tone. “ I don’t think I’m done playing with you yet. Besides my boyfriend might need a few favors and.. why waste a valuable resource such as yourself?” she said before patting her hand against his cheek in faux-adoration. “ You’re cruel, do you realize that?”. Scarlet bit the inside of her cheek, looking around at the reporters in the room before she set her gaze back on Patrick. “ I do what is necessary and nothing else. You got yourself in this position least I remind you.” she said before she took a step closer to him. “ I decide when it ends. Back off. I have nothing to lose from this. You have everything.” she said before she started to walk away from him. “ Oh” she said, stopping to talk to him as she walked backwards. “ Ryan and Madeline send their best wishes” she said before she smiled brightly and turned back into the crowd.
Three glasses of champagne and thirty minutes later Scarlet found herself in the middle of a conversation with two senators from somewhere in the Midwest. Her dad needed those votes.. the Midwest was hard to pin down. “ I’ve got the numbers if you would like to see them,” the older senator said and Scarlet smirked, tilting her head as she held onto the end of his tie and twirled it slightly, “ I’d love to see your poll…. Numbers” she added before nodding seriously. Why were men so easy to get what you wanted out of them? She smiled, turning as she heard her name. “ Scarlet can we get a quick interview before you go on?” he asked and she turned with a smile. “ Sure,” she said happily before lowering the champagne glass as she lowered her arm down to her side and gave her complete attention to the man who was pushing his glasses up on his nose. “ So.. Miss Harris. You haven’t ever been one that’s been shy with the press or the publicity that has come along with your.. lifestyle” he started off with, sounding almost nervous. Scarlet smiled at him, “ Would you like me to be more shy.. Mr…. Carlson?” she asked as she flicked the edge of his ID badge for the reporters. “ No.. no not at all, Miss Harris. It’s just you seem very familiar with the circus that follows your father. Is that part of being a socialite before he announced his campaign to run? It’s no secret that you, Mackenzie Bannon and Mandi Collins are the most sought after heiresses in the nation,” he said as though to explain. Scarlet leaned closer , lowering her voice to almost a whisper as she looked into his eyes, “ And why do you think I’m sought after?” she said before smiling slowly. The reporter cleared his throat before pushing his glasses up again. “ Um.. do you think the influence that you and your friends have will help or hurt your fathers campaign?” he asked stammering it out. “ This generation is vocal and in your face. We all throw our opinions on twitter and facebook, thinking people care whether or not I’ve drank nine snapples today or not. My friends and I are sort of.. able to influence others without always realizing it necessarily. Mackenzie and Mandi are both phenomenal influences, and anything they attach their name to is successful. As far as young voters go I think it.. aides my father in a certain aspect. I could be your dorm mate. Mackenzie could be your neighbor. We’re young, we like to have fun. We sort of bring a realness factor to the campaign. We’re people, and living your life conformed in some cookie cutter image doesn’t always guarantee success. We’re “ heiresses” but I think you would be naïve to think that we sip lattes all day while shopping and then go and get pedicures. Do we do those things? Hell yeah it’s nice to be pampered. Mackenzie Bannon has influenced millions of people through her entertainment work to embrace themselves and accept themselves for who they are with extreme messages against bullying. Mandi Collins is pre-law and will get her skinny ass into whatever Law school she wants because she’s earned it academically, not because she is buying her way in. I have a dedication to political science. We’re breaking stereotypes. As a generation we can do anything our parents can do.. and we can look better while doing it,” she said before she smiled, laughing quietly under her breath. “Very good points Miss Harris, you should find that you’ll do very well in your own debates when the time comes.”. Scarlet nodded, “ Zach keeps me fresh on my debating skills” she said sarcastically to playfully suggest that they bicker.
“ Speaking of Zach.. is that an engagement ring?” he asked, lowering his eyes to her hands. “ It is an engagement ring,” she said as she nodded. Technically, it was. Her father had bought it as an engagement ring. “ It’s my mothers” she said before the reporter looked disappointed to find out. “ So Mrs. Harris lets you borrow her jewelry,” he said skeptically. “ I said it was my mothers. Mrs. Harris is my fathers wife,” she said, moving her hair off of her shoulder. That woman was not her mother. Her mother was six feet under and was probably rolling in her grave right now. “ Oh,” the reporter said slightly uncomfortably before he pressed forward, “ I was hoping Zach was the one to give it to you” he said before Scarlet smiled, “ He did,” she confirmed, giving a small nod. She watched as his eyes lit up, “ So is it true? Are you and Zach engaged?” he asked. Scarlet opened her mouth to speak before she felt a hand on her lower back and turned to see her father. “Darling, they’re ready for your speech,” he said with a smile before turning and offering his hand out to the reporter. Scarlet smiled, looking at the reporter before she offered her glass of champagne out to him. “ Stay tuned,” she said, letting go of the glass once he took it before she made her way to the stage.
“ Wow..” Scarlet said as she smiled into the microphone, taking in a deep breath and sighing as though she were nervous. “ The first party I remember my dad throwing involved chex mix and bad Christmas sweaters.” she said, letting a few laughs go through the crowd. “ We’ve come a long way since then,” she said, pushing her bangs from her face. “ As a nation.. we’ve come a long way. Civil rights are finally becoming an opportunity for everyone. There was a time when half of you wouldn’t have been allowed through these doors, and now we’re all acquaintances, enjoying each others company. It’s silly to imagine the experiences we might lose by holding others back from what they rightfully deserve. Happiness.” she said, bringing her focus to her father. He was the only one who it seemed didn’t want her to be happy, to be herself. “ What we’ve gone through as a nation in the last decade exceeds political stands. In order to be comfortable with who you are, no matter what that means, it’s important to be accepted by your fellow country mates. I am a young Caucasian woman. I’m a college student. I am a dedicated student. I am a social butterly, and I love parties. I’m someone’s best friend. I’m in love. I am the definition of a stereotype, and I’m an American. So is the little girl who sits in the bathroom stall at lunch crying instead of nourishing herself because the girls in school are picking on her over her weight. So is the guy in your office that gets made fun of and called names because of his sexual orientation. We’re all American, we’re a family. And I am honored to support the campaign whose platform endorses the belief that being an American makes you family, and that we need to extend the feeling of love and acceptance that we feel for those in our household for those on our block.. in our state. The nation. So raise your glass in a toast to Senator Harris of California… the next President of the United States… my daddy..” she said while smiling at him, “ To you Senator Harris. May the rest of the nation feel as accepted as you make your family feel” she said, lifting her eyebrow slightly in his direction before she placed a cold smile on her lips. After finishing the glass of champagne, she set the glass down roughly, lifting her hand up in a wave at the reporters.
“ That was surprisingly pleasant, I was expecting tricks up your sleeve” her father said as he came up to stand beside her. He placed his hand on her lower back, stopping to take a few pictures before he would give a speech of his own. Scarlet looked up at him adoringly for the cameras, keeping her eyes locked on his as she spoke quietly. “ Watch your back, daddy”. Scarlet turned back to the reporters, letting them take a few more pictures before she stepped away from him completely. Where had that pretty Zach wandered himself off too. It took a few scans across the ballroom but finally she found him. Scarlet smiled, lifting her hand up in a small wave to him before she made her way across the ballroom to him. “ Hi,” she said quietly, bringing her left hand to the side of his jaw bone. Scarlet felt her chest tighten as she looked up at her hand, realizing that the ring was placed on her left hand ring finger. She stopped, licking her lips before she looked from the ring back to Zach’s eyes. There was the panic that came with the idea of committing herself to someone, being called a fiancé, a wife. That made it all more real.. more painful when Zach was gone. Because really, if she vocally agreed to it, verbally said it, that was sealing his doom. Everyone she had ever loved had either died or fallen down a spiral because of her. She’d caused nothing but damage. But for the first time she didn’t move the ring immediately off of that finger, she left it, letting it sparkle against his skin before she smiled hesitantly. “ How’d you like my speech?” she asked under her breath before she stood up on her toes to kiss him.
