Anabelle got out of the passenger seat of the car her driver had been driving around. She didn’t really think she needed a driver, in fact she thought the idea of a taxi was better. But she needed to get out and about through town and she knew that had it not been for football that Hunter would have joined her. And then this guy, Phil that was driving her, had the nerve to think that she was actually going to sit in the back and not get to know him. Yeah, right! She sat her happy little behind in the passenger seat next to him and was getting to know him pretty well throughout their driving around town for that afternoon. But finally a craving for coffee had set in and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to let him take a break, go see his kid at lunch during her lunch hour, she could sit in a coffee shop. Apparently people didn’t give their drivers breaks during the day, but if she was just going to sit in the coffee shop and enjoy a cup of coffee, what was the harm? Besides all she could think of was how excited his little girl was going to be seeing her daddy walk through those doors and the hug that she would surely jump up and give him. “ See you later Phil.. remember what my mama said.. stay away from the fishsticks” she said before she placed on a loving smile and shut the door. Almost instantaneously she was caught off guard as someone screamed out at her that she was an overrated spoiled bitch. Anabelle felt herself stop in place as she was walking. ‘Bitch’ was something she had never been called before in her entire life and she found it interesting that it was coming from someone who had no idea who she was. Anabelle looked over her shoulder at Phil who was already driving away before she walked over to the stranger and offered him a kind shoulder. “ Hi,” she said warmly as she closed the distance between them. “ Are you free for a moment? I’d love to buy you a cup of coffee,” she said, gesturing to the coffee shop a few stores down from them. She watched him, waiting until he gave a skeptical nod. “ Oh, good!” she said with a genuine smile across her face as she turned to walk towards the coffee shop. “ My name is Anabelle Hart.. some of my close friends call me Gracie. What’s your name?” she asked the stranger as she held the door to the coffee shop for him. ‘ Um.. well it’s Kevin’ he said in a voice softer than the one that he had used to yell at her.
“ Well it is so nice to meet you, Kevin” she said as she stepped on up to the counter. “ Now you just pick out whatever your heart desires, it’ll be on me” she said before she looked to the front counter and ordered herself a pumpkin chai tea latter. “ Oh can I get one of those muffins too.. I know, I know.. A moment on the lips forever on the hips, but some risks are just worth taking sweetheart” she said before she laughed quietly and looked over to Kevin waiting for him to place his order. “ I’ll just take a tall black coffee” he said dryly before Anabelle looked over him and back at the polite girl behind the counter. “ Can you throw in one of those muffins for my friend as well?” she asked. Maybe he was cranky because he was hungry. She smiled as the girl gave her the total and handed her card over. “ Thank you so much… hey are you watching the football game later tonight? My best friend in the entire world is playin’…” she said proudly of Hunter as she signed the credit card slip and made her way over to a table where she sat down and looked over at Kevin. She took in a deep breath as she pushed her hair away from her face and looked back over at him, gesturing for him to go ahead and have a seat. It was okay, she was the last person to bite. “ So Kevin tell me about yourself” she said as she took the lid off of her pumpkin chai tea so that it would cool off a little more quickly. ‘ Well.. I’m 23. I’m going to school for civil engineering. Um.. I like sports… can I ask you a question?” he asked as Anabelle was taking a drink from her chai tea. “ Oh my gosh, of course. That’s part of getting to know someone. Ask away” she said as she set her cup down. “ Why are you buying me coffee and..muffins..” he said gesturing to what was in front of him. “ Is it just because you can? Clearly you know my opinion of you so I’m not sure what you’re trying to accomplish here” he said with a slight edge to his tone. “ I’m not trying to accomplish anything,” she said slightly out of surprise.
Anabelle watched him carefully before she placed her hands on the table and smiled hesitantly. “ I thought you might be having a bad day. So I thought a little coffee and a snack might give you a pick me up. See you don’t know me from Betsy and you have an opinion about me. Which is just fine sugar, because I have been guilty of doing the same thing.” she said , though she stopped to think for a moment and couldn’t find a time where she had honestly thought so poorly of anyone. “ But the reason I’m not upset, if that’s what you’re getting at Kevin, is because.. you don’t know me. So they’re just words that you’re saying. And clearly.. they upset you more than they upset me. I mean.. you’re a stranger on the street. Now you said that civil engineering was your passion and I swear on the lords name above me I haven’t the foggiest idea about what any of that takes.. but if that’s your passion and you go after it.. there aren’t going to be people yelling at you on sidewalks,” she said as she watched him carefully. “ See now that’s one little thing I’ve learned about life. There is going to be anger until the day we die. But it only effects the people that hold onto it. If you hate someone and they don’t care.. who’s it hurting? It’s only hurting you. And you are so young, and you seem so like you’re so smart.. I would hate for anything to hurt you. You don’t like me and you don’t know me which is perfectly fine sweetie because chances are if you did know me you still wouldn’t like me. If you’re having a bad day and you needed to vent out at somebody I am so happy to take the place of that versus someone else who might be effected by it. But what I never want anyone to go through.. is the potential of not having someone miraculous be a part of their life because they had a misconceived notion about them.” she said before she smiled brightly and tapped her hands on the table. “ Now I need to get headed out of here because I promised Hunter’s mama I would call her before the game and this whole coffee shop does not need to hear my ramblin’s and be bored out of their mind.. “ she said as she stood up and picked up her coffee. “ Kevin if I ever get the pleasure to see you again you better have a smile on your handsome little face” she said before she leaned down and wrapped her arms around him in a hug. “ I hope life gives you everything you’re searching for “ she said, wishing him good luck in his engineering program before she picked up her muffin offering him a wave before she left the crowded little coffee shop.
Anabelle thought back to him as she was standing in her little dressing room at the football stadium where Hunter was going to play. She had been so excited just to come see him let alone being offered to sing the National Anthem, which she would do in a heartbeat. She hadn’t sang at one of Hunter’s games since high school. Anabelle puffed out her cheeks and did a few vocal exercises as she warmed herself up, shaking her hands out nervously. “ Anabelle it’s going to be fine, the national anthem is a piece of cake” one of her crew members offered and Anabelle gasped slightly and turned around. “ No no no, you’ve got it all wrong. I’m so nervous for Hunter” she said earnestly before she gave a small nod. ” I mean he has the pressure of the whole team on his shoulders, and Lord knows he is talented but this means so much to him..” she said with concern in her voice. “ Alright gather round everybody let’s pray” she said, asking everyone to come into the circle to pray like she did before every performance. She lowered her head and held onto the hands of the two bandmates besides her. “ Lord thank you so much for bringing all of these wonderful people into my life and letting me get to know each and every one of them. Watch down on their families tonight as we are traveling away from home and bring peace and sleep to the little ones in their homes that will be snugglin’ up in bed pretty soon. Lord we ask that you help us deliver a beautiful anthem to make everyone proud and most of all Lord I ask you to keep your eye out on Hunter Riggins. I don’t need to tell you but his number is 33 so if you could just watch over him and his performance tonight, make sure that he stays safe and plays to the best of his potential. Thank you so much for the love and support that is inside this stadium tonight and thank you in advance for helping our boys whoop those Raiders’ ass” she said unexpectedly before she brought her head up and clapped her hands together.
Anabelle stood at the gates letting them adjust her hair as she watched out onto the field. The boys from both teams were warming up on the field. She peeled her eyes on the field, trying to keep her eye on Hunter. She was wearing his jersey after all. Her eyes stopped as she saw a pair of kids with their mother. They were holding up a sign that quickly summed up that their father was a soldier overseas whose favorite player was Hunter. “ Hey “ Anabelle said out to her side, mainly grasping for anyone to pay attention to her. Finally one of her crew members came over and she held out her microphone. “ Thank you sweetie. If it is at all possible I am going to need a headset microphone instead of this handheld and those two children over there,” she said pointing over to them with the sign. “ I’m going to go ask their mama for permission for something but if you could find two small Riggins jerseys and two adult Riggins jerseys from the shop upstairs and bring it down in like five minutes I would love to pay you back plus some” she said before smiled politely and left the gate. Most people were focused on the game, but the few that noticed her walking yelled out at her. She waved out of embarrassment and walked a bit faster to reach the kids. “ Hi, I’m Anab-“ she started off but was cut off by the mom. “ I know who you are Anabelle Hart..” she said shocked and Anabelle gave a small smile. “ Where is your husband overseas if you don’t mind me asking” she asked as she smiled down at the boy and girl, giving them each a wave. “ He’s stationed in Iraq,” she said and Anabelle gave a small nod as she licked her lips. “ I cannot even begin to thank you enough for the sacrifices your family has made,” she said as she brought her hand to her heart “ Military families are the most unselfish people to grace this Earth thank you so much.. for everything,” she said as she leaned over and hugged the woman. “ Now..” Anabelle said, bringing a huge warm smile to her face as she kneeled down. “ What are your names and how old are you” she said looking at each of them. “ I’m Scott, I’m four.” he said as he held up his hand to show her on his fingers. “ This is Emily, she’s three. But she gets shy” he said as he gently nudged his sister on the arm. “ Well Scott and Emily.. I have a big favor to ask you, do you think you could help me?” Anabelle said as she looked between them. She smiled as she watched Scott look down at Emily and then nod at her. “ I think we could “ he said and Anabelle feigned a sigh of relief. “ I have to sing your daddy a song so he can hear it across the world.. do you think you could help me?” she asked , almost as though it was urgent. After all.. who had more of an emotional connection to the national anthem than a soldier who fought to defend it. The little girls eyes widened as she nodded and held onto her brothers hand. Anabelle placed her hands on her knees and stood up. “ Good! It’s going to need some heart” she said as she smiled down at them and then look up at the mom. “ I was hoping you would join us, too” she said. Anabelle held her hand out to the little boy and girl, letting them hold her hands as they left the stands excitedly with their mother following them while holding onto the sign with her husbands and Hunters name on it. Once they got down to the bottom she saw her crew member who went to get the jerseys and quickly turned to the family and offered them out before giving the extra to the mother, explaining that she would have Hunter sign them all and she could send it to her husband. Finally her crew member was setting her up the microphone and attaching it to her jersey so that her hands could be free. Anabelle reached down with a bright smile to hold their hands as she walked out onto the field after the announcer told the fans in the stadium that she would be performing the national anthem. Once she reached her mark she waved out to the fans and looked down to show the kids how to do it as well. She brushed her hair from her face as she looked over at the poster the mom was holding before she leaned down to whisper to the kids, keeping her hand over the microphone that they should sing real loud for daddy. After she confirmed that they were ready she gave a small nod and stayed kneeled down beside them before she started to sing the national anthem. When she was finished she reached out to hug each of them before standing up straight and hugging the mother again. She wanted to stay out in the stands to watch the game, and thankfully the family was more than willing to take the suite that the stadium had offered her. They were a family they probably needed a bit more privacy than she did. And this way she could scream and cheer for Hunter while having a stadium beer or two. Which she did. By the end of the game her throat felt so hoarse from screaming for Hunter and of course it all paid off. He may not be a quarterback but he sure as well was the leader of the team and it was obvious to everyone watching the game. After the final second passed down in the fourth quarter Anabelle did the same exact thing she would have done in high school – stormed the field, found her friend, jumped up in a hug to hold onto him and wrapped her arms around him tightly so she wouldn’t fall from his grasp. “ You did it!” she said happily as she squeezed her arms around him even more tightly. He was stinky and sweaty and everything by the definition of gross, but he was her best friend and she could care less. He had won, he deserved a hug.
" I am so buying your beers tonight sugar, you did so good!" she said happily as she clung as tightly as she possibly could to him. Once he set her back down on the field she took a step back to let him celebrate with the rest of the team before she decided to wait outside of the locker room for him to take a super quick shower and put his clothes back on. It amazed her how good he was with fans, especially kids. She smiled as she watched him, remembering when he was their age and as infatuated with his sports heroes. Life had treated them pretty damn well. " Come on" she said, grabbing him by the forearm and pulling him out towards a cab. Since they didn't really know the city instead they decided to just tell the driver what they were looking for, and he sure as hell delivered. Anabelle widened her eyes as she stepped inside the bar and couldn't stop the grin that came across her lips. " Hunter it's just like home" she said before she squeezed her hand over his excitedly and made her way over to the bar. " Hey y'all" she said to the bartenders behind the counter. " Can I get a budlight bottle and a whiskey coke please" she asked before she smiled politely and handed over a credit card to open a tab. " Here sweetie" she said as she held the beer up to him and brought the glass to her lips as she took a drink. " Do you think it's karaoke or a live band?" she asked, hearing whoever was playing ending up a song. She stood on her toes, trying to see who was playing but she couldn't see him, back to the crowd. " Must be a band" she said nonchalantly as she placed one of her hands in her back pocket. " Oh my gosh are you Hunter Riggins? GREAT game tonight" someone said and Anabelle gasped excitedly. " Here!" she said, setting her glass down and took the jersey she was wearing off so that she was left in her tank top. " Sugar sign that for her" she said with a bright smile before she picked her drink up. Ooh Honey-Bee. She loved this song. Anabelle brought the glass to her lips and started to take a drink when the singer turned around. Almost instantly she choked on her drink, lowering it down to the side before she brought her hand up to her mouth and coughed a few times. She frowned at Hunter, giving a small shake of her head, " Drank too fast I think" she said before clearing her throat again. Anabelle scrunched her nose slightly before she pushed the hair from her face and looked back up at the stage. She kept her eyes locked on him, only moving them from his face to look down at his hands on the guitar a few times before she made a decision. Yup. Decided. " Be right back," she said to Hunter before placing a kiss on his cheek and set her drink down, slipping her white tank top, cut off shorts and cowboy boots into the crowd around the stage. Anabelle made her way to the front, apologizing to a few people as she squeezed her way up front. She smiled as she brought her eyes to his, hoping to catch them so she could try to get his attention. She needed to talk to him,... like right now. Once the song ended she took in a deep breath and held it, keeping her hands in her back pockets as he announced that they were going to take a quick break but that they'd be back later. The moment he stepped off the stage he was surrounded by girls and Anabelle took a slight step back, tapping the toe of her cowboy boot back behind her as she bit the edge of her lip. But he looked over the shoulder of one of the girls, giving her an opportunity to bring her hand out of her back pocket and give a small wave to him. It took her off guard when he started walking towards her but nevertheless her smile grew even brighter. " Hey there, I'm Anabelle Hart" she said as she held her hand out to him and took a step closer to close the distance between them. " I was listening to you sing and.. I came to the decision that .... handsome, I need you" she said as she held her hand in his without taking it back. " Can we go somewhere private?" she asked, keeping her hand in his as she lifted her other hand to gesture over her shoulder. If she was going to ask him on tour then she sure as well wanted to ask him where she didn't have to yell it at him. She honestly couldn't think of someone better suited to open up for her.
