“ I’m not sure how we’re going to handle this. I think it’s going to be like a wave, we’re just going to have to ride it and go along with it instead of trying to control it,” Collin muttered off in the background to Logan who was behind the switchboard as Luke was in the booth recording ‘Country Man’. Anabelle kept her legs crossed as they were up in the chair, focusing her eyes on Luke in the booth. They had already recorded the instrumental part of the song and he was just laying down vocals now. Laying them down indeed. “ Oh Luke Bryan…” Zoe said off in the corner, “ Too bad I think he’s taken” she muttered before Collin scoffed. “ Tell me about the fucking mess this is making. Touring together. She is refusing to host the CMA’s unless he does it with her.” he muttered with annoyance in his tone. “ Love at first sight,.. it’s cute. Logan will find a way to make it work” she said, watching Collin as he was watching Luke, probably coming up with ideas for his music video. “ Pain in my fucking ass more like it,” he said dryly before lifting his hand up to his baseball cap and moving it back slightly to scratch his forehead before adjusting it back down over his head. “He’s gonna make Renner some money,” Zoe said giving a slight shrug. “ I’m going to go get started on the merch. I hear a merch table was promised in this arrangement” she said before giving a small salute and made her way out of the studio. Anabelle took in a deep breath, feeling Collin’s eyes drift towards her. “ Why him?” he asked. She gave a small shrug of the shoulder, “ Why does your heart beat in your chest? Or the sun rise every day? He feels as right as my favorite pair of sweats,” she said before giving a nod. “ He’ll do this tour good,” she said before taking her eyes off of him for the first time and bringing them up to Collin’s. “ For the sake of both of your careers. Keep it in check in the public eye. And has it occurred to you that Cowboy Casanova here might not have hearts in his eyes like you do? Love at first sight doesn’t exist. You need to be more careful. And think about his career too.. don’t make him a joke,” he said sternly before sitting down next to Logan. Anabelle narrowed her eyebrows before she looked back towards Luke. The only people that really talked bluntly to her were Collin and Hunter. But she liked it better when Hunter did it.
Anabelle took in a deep breath and held it as Luke stepped out of the booth. Almost immediately Logan got up, making his way over to Luke and pulled him to the side. “ You’re up, Dixie” Preston said from behind the soundboard and tilted his head to the booth. “ But..” she said , looking off in Luke’s direction. “ Go on, now” Preston said, trying to imitate Luke before Anabelle placed her hands on the side of the chair and made her way into the recording booth. She looked up at the microphone and frowned, reaching up to pull it down so she could reach it. Anabelle lifted her hands up, pushing her hair back behind her shoulders as she stepped up to the microphone. Ridiculous how much her life had changed in such a short amount of time. Only Logan Renner could take a waitress and in less than a year have her headlining a tour. Anabelle did her best to focus on the lyrics, singing into the mic, but she couldn’t help but be distracted by the two men deep in conversation on the other side of the glass. “ …. Anabelle that’s not the right song” Preston said while shaking his head. “.. Really?” she said, pulled back to her work with slight shock. “ Yeah we recorded ‘Last Name’ months ago” he said with a blank expression. “ Well..I know..” she said out of embarrassment before she pushed her bangs from her face. “ Okay I’m really sorry, sugar. Can we just start from the top?” she questioned but Preston was already laughing, starting the track over and giving her a thumbs up to gesture to go ahead and let it go. Anabelle licked her lips, looking down at the sheets on the stand in front of her and had to literally force herself to not concentrate on Luke and Logan. It was just.. she had made promises to Luke. No strings attached. Do whatever he wanted. And it made her nervous to have other people involved. It had been her promise, and if he got disappointed it was her fault, after all he had trusted to come with her over everyone else for some reason. After what seemed like forever she finally stepped out of the studio. “ Good jo-“ Logan started off but Anabelle interrupted him, speaking eighty miles a minute, “ Thanks sweetie, means a lot. Couldn’t be happier. So what’s the deal, we have a deal? Everyone is happy?” she asked, ,feeling her nerves getting all shook up like Elvis was in town. Anabelle jumped up, wrapping her arms around Luke in a hug excitedly since him and Logan seemed to be getting along so dad gum well. “ Oh my good lord, Logan. I am gonna make you a caramel apple pie to make your knees go weaker than Tony Romo in the second half during the clutch” she said as she tightened her arms around Logans neck with what to be her toughest deadlock. “ Ah, sugar!!!” Anabelle said, moving away from Logan to hug Luke again for the second time in the span of less than a minute. “ I am so proud of you,” she said, resting her cheek against his shoulder as she held onto him.
That was where she left him, in her studio, working with Logan, Preston and Collin. Left to go to her new apartment where it was still half decorated, one of the walls half painted where she hadn’t finished. Anabelle lifted her hand up to the extra-large hot rollers that were in her hair. She took in a deep breath and breathed it out slowly, doing her best to try and calm her nerves. This was dumb. He had been to her place – hell he helped her pick it out between the choices that Logan gave her. He’d slept on her couch. “ Okay.. “ she said, pacing back and forth. “ Okay, okay okay..”. When there was a knock at the door, she jumped slightly before she looked at the time. There was no way in hell that was Luke already. Anabelle stepped to the door before she opened it, standing to see the doorman to her building, and a girl scout cookie girl. “… Hi” she said, standing up straight as she placed on a smile. “ These are for you Miss Hart” he said before offering out the flowers. “ Thank you so much, you got yourself a little lady?” she asked, looking down at the bouquet before she read off the card and smiled up at him. “ Yes ma’am I do”he said, giving a confused expression. “ Let’s see..” she said, counting off the roses. Two dozen. Hm. Anabelle took out twelve, shaking them from the water and held onto them carefully to not poke herself. “ Take those home to her, sweetpea” she said before smiling at him and looked down at the little girl. “ Would you like to buy some Girl scout cookies?” the little girl asked and Anabelle broadened her smile, leaning down to get a look at her. “ Would I ever…” she said as she looked down at the sheet. “ You know sweetheart, I have a whole bunch of friends who would love to get their hands. Let’s fill out that sheet you’ve got there and let me go get my checkbook” she said, making her way into the kitchen. Anabelle took out a pen and her checkbook before coming back over, holding onto a handful of the roses before she kneeled down, marking an x through all of the empty slots left on the girls order form. “ Well that should do Shane plenty” she said with a sweet smile before she quickly did the math in her head and wrote out the check, offering it to the little girl. “ Thank you so much for stopping by. You better take these with you,” she said, holding the flowers out to the girl before they said their goodbyes and just like that Anabelle shut the door, back to her nervous thoughts.
Anabelle went back to the bathroom, taking the hot rollers out of her hair so that it had time to cool and settle before she applied her makeup. What an ordeal it was when all this boy probably wanted to do was eat. She paced her apartment, wall to wall, down to the point where she started unpacking her boxes, anything to get her mind off of the forseeable future. Everyone thought they knew what was going on, were throwing out labels. Ridiculous. The boy had a good voice and was going to fit in on her tour. Anabelle sat down at the edge of her couch, smoothing the fabric of her dress over her knees. She found herself humming quietly to herself, which really she only did she was nervous. Which was ridiculous. No need to be nervous. She went out to eat with Hunter all the time. This was no different, only Luke had called it a date. She was going on a date with someone that was going to be sleeping on her couch later that night. How was she supposed to make it through dinner when all she could think of was the way the moon looked against his skin. But maybe Collin was right. Maybe spending time with herself would make Luke look like a joke. She wasn’t even that talented. He probably shouldn’t be associating with her. She wanted his career to be unprecedented. And maybe Collin was right. Crushes were just that. Maybe what Luke needed out of her was strictly professional.
