Anabelle kept her arms crossed tightly across her stomach as she watched him out on stage. He had started singing ‘Country Man’ and since the first strum of the guitar she hadn’t taken a breath. Good god almighty his hips could move. “ He looks like sex on a stick, doesn’t he” one of the stage techs said in the back and Anabelle gave a small sigh. “Something like that” she said before bringing her eyes back to the way he smiled out to the crowd. They were just eating him up, and how couldn’t they. They just wanted a taste of him. Too bad. “ Anabelle you really need to get dressed” her assistant said and Anabelle gave a small frown. “ Just a minute, Alyssa” she said while she was distracted. She didn’t want to walk away, give up a moment of seeing him. Finally the song was winding up and she smiled to herself, “ Good job, Luke..” she said beneath her breath before she made her way to the dressing room. Silver shorts. What person in their right mind wore silver shorts. But the girl had worked so hard. Anabelle gave a small smile to her before she brought her hand up to the back of her neck and scratched it nervously. She wasn’t herself. She was quiet, nervous. Today was a big day. It was the first concert of her headlining tour. But not only that. Luke had come into her life and she suddenly found herself constantly thinking about him- it overwhelmed her thoughts, made her slightly careless about others. His lips had to be the most delicious temptation to have entered her life. Even now she couldn’t stop herself from thinking about them. Anabelle puffed out her cheeks and turned around, seeing him standing in the doorway. “ Jesus!” she screamed out before putting her hand on her chest. “… Is Lord,..sorry… You did great!” she said nervously, placing her hands in her back pockets as she looked over at him. “ I mean they clearly are in love with you” she said, lifting the corner of her lips up into a smile. “ Anabelle we need you out in 2!” someone said, knocking on her door. “ Okay, thank you!” she called out before she looked over at him again.
Anabelle took a step closer to him before she stood on her heels, “ Keep yourself out of trouble while I’m gone” she whispered near him before she held onto the collar of his shirt, pulling him to meet her hallway between their height level and kissed him. Anabelle stayed on her toes, bringing her free hand up to the back of her neck as she nibbled against his bottom lip. Kisses with him were never dull. In fact, ever since ‘the talk’ that Logan had with them, they were all pretty magical. And it wasn’t just because they were slightly keeping their relationship out of the light. Relationship.. was that even what you could call it? She wasn’t his girlfriend. But each kiss felt like he was giving her an opportunity to just be closer to him. Sneaking kisses in at the studio, holding hands on the elevator before letting go right as the doors started to open, It made it a little more exciting, being able to look across the room when they were surrounded by people and know that when he gave her that small smirk he was thinking about the same thing she was. And then moments, like this, where they didn’t have to hide from anyone, she felt like she could really be herself with him. The past two weeks had been nothing short of amazing. He’d been helping her set up her new apartment which had meant lots of putting together furniture ( Luke’s work ), making breakfast ( anabelle’s part), writing music together, board games, watching football, setting off the fire alarms when she accidentally burnt the cake.. his kisses were so distracting. And just like that all of the images of him flooded her mind; icing on his nose, quick kisses before she left to go to bed, painting each other’s faces and bodies instead of the walls, fighting over the last piece of pizza, Luke trying to teach her how to ‘shake it’ in her living room, falling asleep with the lights of Paris that she never took down in her living room.
Anabelle softened her grip against his neck as she took a step back. She gave a quiet laugh before she bit the side of her lip, “ You light me up quicker than a match to kerosene” she said, feeling the butterflies flutter around inside of her. “ Okay I really have to go” she said, placing a quick kiss on his lips before she darted out of the dressing room. Anabelle ran past the line of people trying to adjust what she was wearing. “ What took you?” they questioned, frowning upon her as they got her all settled. Anabelle had never been one for lying and today wasn’t the day to start. Avoiding wasn’t the same thing as lying. “…. I’m sorry, what?” she questioned before she fit the earpiece into her ear and took the microphone from someone at the side of the stage before she went over and sat down on the couch. It was so dark, and it was exciting to hear the roar of the people who had come out to sing with her, when they had no idea she was on stage to hear it. It made it almost so surreal. Whatever happened to walking out on stage and saying ‘ hey y’all I’m Anabelle, and I want to sing you a little somethin’ “. Everything had to be a grand entrance. She licked her lips nervously as the opening music for Before He Cheats started to blare from the speakers that her band was hooked up to. And just like that the light beamed down on her. She was so nervous that for a slight second she forgot to start singing the words. One year ago she was serving up fried hot wings and tall beers to drunken college kids. Now she was wearing silver shorts with a stadium full of fans singing along to a song that is something she would never be able to do herself – slamming a baseball into some guys truck. Not only that, she felt like she was experiencing things she didn’t imagine were possible. And it was all nestled up in that pair of boots with that plaid button up, side smirk and baseball hat. She’d take that over any red carpet any day.
Anabelle caught her breath for a moment after the song ended and adjusted the mic against her song. “ Thank y’all so much for coming out tonight.” she started , walking across the stage. “ I’m sorry, y’all are about to see how short I am. I just can’t do this” she said before leaning down to take her high heels off. She sighed out of relief – those things hurt. She was short. Accept it. Anabelle smiled as she walked over to the edge of the stage, leaning down to hold out the pair of shoes to a teenage girl that appeared to be with a group of her friends. “ So what did y’all think of Luke Bryan?” she asked, smiling instantly at the cheering that came through the crowd. “ Well I can just leave and go get him back, jeez” she said through a quiet laugh. “ No, he will be back later to help me out. Lord knows I need it.. are there any other country men out there? I’ve been lookin’ for me one,” she said before she pointed out a young boy. “ What does that sign say?” she questioned before she opened her mouth wide in shock and covered it before laughing. Anabelle made her way over and held her hand out to help him stand up on the stage. “Let’s see your sign” she said, placing her hand on his back before he held up the sign asking her to be his first kiss. Anabelle nodded, standing up straight and started stretching her arms out, turning her neck from side to side like she was going to really lay it on him. Finally she leaned down close to him, speaking into the microphone. “ What’s your name?” she asked before she held it up to him. “ Edwin” he said nervously. “ Edwin, I ain’t gonna lie to ya. I’m gonna be straight. I’m a little nervous.. so you’re gonna have to promise to take it easy on him,” she said with a smile as she lifted her eyebrow at him. Finally she leaned down and took his hand as she kissed him. After he got off the stage Anabelle had to remind herself to breathe and that they were here because they liked her. Supposedly.
“ Okay y’all I’m going to ask Luk- wow.. y’all really like him” she laughed, pushing her hair from her face as she looked off to the other side of the stage. “ He’s going to grace us with his presence one more time,” she said as she licked her lips, waiting for him to come back onto the stage. And just like that, him coming on stage shook her world like it did every time he walked into a room. But instead of doing what her heart told her to do, run over there and hug him. Logan was in her head telling her to stay on her end of the stage. Don’t make him look like a joke. Don’t make him look like he was using her. Anabelle closed her eyes, smiling as Luke started out the song and eventually, like in the video, she made her way towards him. She could be near him on this song without people being suspicious. Hell she could probably even hold his hand for just a few moments. Which she did. The show ended some time later, though she couldn’t tell you just how exactly. All she could think about was how well he had done, how he looked on stage when she got to sing with him, the crowds reaction to him. He was complete perfection. And now she was making her way back towards the tour bus where someone had taken food from their dressing room and brought it in so everyone could eat. Anabelle did her best to try and stay out of the way, picking up clothes from her luggage before she went to the bathroom and changed into something a little more comfortable- some cotton cheerleading shorts and one of Hunter’s jr high football t-shirts. She looked at her hair, put it up, took it down, put it back up. She tilted her head to the side. Luke would like it better down. Which meant she was putting it up. Because he would stare at her, wanting her to take it down. And one of two things would happen, he would either tell her or he would do it himself. Either way she would get a compliment out of it. And the butterflies. So up it went, with a nod of finality as she tightened it up in a messy bundle atop her head. Once she came out of the bathroom she was bombarded by some of her bandmates, being handed a drink.
“Thank you so much,” she said, reaching forward to give them a hug, resting her chin on his shoulder as she looked down the bus to see Luke. She gave him a wink and a smile before she let go of her bandmate and took a step back. And just like that everyone on the bus was applauding them. Well, most likely Luke. She smiled as she made her way over to him. “ I think they liked your first show, sugar” she said with a small smirk as she stood up on her toes to hug him. So everyone at the label and with their group sort of knew. Well they knew as much as Anabelle did about her and Luke, which wasn’t much. “ Why don’t you celebrate with them tonight.. you can come sleep later if you want,” she said, letting him know he was sort of off the hook tonight. She didn’t need to be at his hip. They were on a damn bus together. That sort of put them close enough, he needed his space too. Tonight was about him, not about them. Anabelle let go of his hand, bringing her bottle of beer to her lips as she made her way back to a different cluster of people. Her bandmates were really funny, especially when they were drinking with Luke’s band. Along with Hunter impersonations, talking about the south, drinking beers, pulling over on some old dirt road so that the guys could play football in an empty field, the night had sort of turned into a blur. She wasn’t even sure how long she had her head rested against her pillow before she felt the weight of Luke crawling into her bunk. Not only that but he was telling her to scoot over, ‘Go on now’ he said and Anabelle moved closer to the wall before she turned to face him. “ You don’t seriously think you’re going to wear that dirty ol’ hat in here while we’re sleeping do you?” she asked as she smiled, taking it off of his head before she leaned over his body to shut the curtain behind him. She dropped the hat down at their feet before looking down at his lips, kissing him for a few moments before she moved his arm so she could lay against his chest and took in a deep breath as she rested comfortably against him. No sense to rush things as long as she could just fade into him.
