Scarlet licked her lips as she was pushing her hair from her eyes, looking down at Joel who was charismatically talking to the interviewer. “ And how does your label feel about you publically endorsing a candidate when you yourself aren’t eligible to vote legal age wise, or citizenship wise?” the interviewer asked before putting the microphone in Joel’s face. ” Oh, I mean.. I’d say that for being seventeen I’m severely mature for my age. I’ve traveled the world, graduated from more than one school, I’ve experienced things that most people don’t get to and I’m honestly very thankful for it. It’s rough because if I could vote I would, but I’m not eligible too, yet. As far as endorsing a candidate goes um.. I mean I just like to think of my friends as a family. “ Joel said before looking over and offering Scarlet a quick wink. “ So will you be playing the event all day?” he asked and Joel gave a slow nod, “ Yeah, absolutely. Come on down after you’ve voted. If you’re under eighteen, just bring in the sticker from when your parents voted. We’ll give you a good show to listen to,” Joel said before leaning over to give the interviewer a handshake and Scarlet a quick hug. “ I’m sorry but I gotta head over to the stage,” he said as he was squeezing her tightly and gave a wave to the interviewer. Almost instantaneously he was darting off behind Scarlet and she gave a small laugh as she looked over at the interviewer. “ It’s no secret that you have a close relationship with many of the Taboo artists considering you grew up in a tight circle with Logan Renner, Shane Madden and Ryan O’Neil. Can we expect any performances from them as well? Do they also endorse your father’s campaign?”. Scarlet smiled and offered a shrug of her shoulder. “ I think those boys will always refer to my dad by his first name since we did grow up so close to each other. I guess I haven’t had the opportunity to talk to them individually about it. But you’re right, we are extremely close so my father’s camp knows who they all are. If they showed up, they’d be given a key to the place to do as they like,” she said as she smiled over at him. “ How confident are you of your father’s victory?” he asked and Scarlet couldn’t help but flash a grin instantaneously. “ The party’s waiting,” she said before she leaned over to give him a kiss on the cheek, “ I’m so sorry to cut this short, but I actually have to go vote,” she said before she leaned back and shook his hand, thanking him as he wished her family luck and then turned her shoulder to look for where the voting booths were set.
Scarlet made her way over to the platform, knowing that her dad was waiting to get an opportunity to vote until they could get a family photo together before doing so. She did as she was told, smiling, placing her arm behind his lower back, play nicely. Where was Zach? She faltered momentarily from her beauty pageant stance as she scanned the crowd for him. He had looked beyond handsome this morning. When she had woken up and saw him still sleeping, with his arms stretched underneath his pillow and the sun hitting his skin, she could have sworn he was completely out. But that was the thing about Zach, he was always aware of his surroundings, even in sleep. So when she had leaned down to give him a kiss, she smiled as he tilted his head up to meet her, with his eyes still closed. Couldn’t sneak anything on that guy. But he’d certainly snuck up on her. It amazed her how much she loved him, how much of herself she was willing to let change because of that love. The fact that she was even willing to admit she was in love was more than she could give credit to any one else she had really dated. Logan had come the closest, and up until Zach she was convinced she would probably never meet anyone that made her feel like she was worthy of being loved, let alone loving them with everything she had. And here he was. He came into her life and she loved everything about him. She loved his dark hair that curled the longer it got, his olive complexion, how he was someone who could control the tone of a room without so much as uttering a single word. He was dominating and at the same time was kind, to her at least. It was strange to think that the hands that could so easily kill someone, were so gentle upon her skin. And she loved his touch more than she wanted to admit. She loved the way his fingers felt when he played with her hair, or just how protected she felt when he wrapped his arms around her body. She’d never met anyone in her entire life that was capable of making her feel that. Even Logan – he was the only person who had been capable of tearing Scarlet away from situations that were destructive to her. He had a way of getting through to her that no one else could even come close to accomplishing –but Zach made a calmness seep through to her bones. She thought that finding out who he really was would change her view of him. Which it had to an extent, for a time being. He scared her, she didn’t trust him, part of her was worried that it all had been a lie. But there was no way she could have anticipated how things would change. Now that she knew who he truly was and still loved him, it almost seemed like they were both lowering their walls a bit, in awe that the other could love them as much as they did. The kisses felt deeper and more real, the way he held her in his arms when she watched some stupid Housewives show on the couch instead of doing homework. He was her person. And now that she knew the truth she felt like she got all of him. Sex had changed – which she hadn’t anticipated. There was something sexy about knowing what a man was capable of, what he was willing to do to protect you, what his strength was. It made it a little more exciting, not to mention the fact that it really sort of in her mind officially asserted him as the dominant male figure that he deserved to be. And with that she found herself slowly trying to do things to please him. Cooking was always an area she had been horrible in, so it had started off as warming up some pop tarts for him, followed by an upgrade to cereal and toast. Now she was semi learning how to make the bacon and eggs – which seemed to be getting better each time she tried them, though she still wasn’t sure they were edible.
Scarlet snapped her thoughts away from Zach as she looked back at her father and offered a polite smile before stepping into the booth to place her vote. She looked down, seeing her fathers last name, her last name, in the bold print. How badly she wanted to see it as her own in the future. How badly she wanted to help others who weren’t able to help themselves, those that thirsted for the caviar lifestyle she was lucky enough to live off of as they dined on a saltine diet. And then there was Zach. Every decision she made since her father entered politics was one of how it would somehow benefit her, how she could turn it all around to be a product of a successful career for herself. Zach hadn’t been a part of that plan. He wasn’t going to college, and god forbid anyone ever find out what his career had been up to this point and everything she was working for would be taken out from underneath her. She was Superman falling in love with the kryptonite to her career. Though he was also the one thing in her life that mattered above all of it. Maybe it would be for nothing. Maybe nothing would come of his present. Maybe someday he would go back to school. It just wasn’t an option in her mind to ask him to do that. She couldn’t ask him to change his life in order to cater to hers. Scarlet cleared her throat quietly, casting her vote before she took in a deep breath and exited the booth. She lifted her hand and smiled for the pictures, understanding that her lifestyle didn’t exactly pair well for Zach’s career either. She was a hazard to him. And though she never saw herself changing for anyone – part of her also believed that she was more willing to change than he was. She could give up her dreams, she could find new ones. It wasn’t worth bringing him turmoil. But as her father placed his arm around her and leaned down, telling her she looked beautiful, she flickered a small smile. Zach would never ask her to just be the girl on the sidelines in his life. But she felt like he didn’t have to ask her to do that. There really wasn’t much of a choice. Her career couldn’t exist with his, and his career was only made more dangerous by who she was and what she wanted to become later in life. She never wanted to just be the pretty girl in the nice dress that made the portrait look good for her father, she wanted to be the girl that stood out. But she couldn’t stand out with Zach either. “ I’m sorry,” Scarlet said quietly, moving away from her father before she started to make an exit and try to find somewhere a little more private where she could collect her thoughts for herself.
Polls had closed hours ago and her and her entire family, and her fathers political team were camped in Scarlet’s New York penthouse. By this point she had changed into a pair of pajama pants and a t-shirt, doing her best to play hostess to a bunch of white collars when all she really had to offer them was cans of coke. Though the white collar in herself cringed at it, eventually calling down to the catering of the kitchen enclosed with the rest of the building. The electoral votes were pouring in and she was exhausted, perched up on the couch and a blanket as she rested her head against Zach’s body. In all honesty, she wasn’t aware how long she had been asleep. But she knew before she had fallen asleep that a lot of her fathers political team were discussing amongst themselves the fact that it appeared her and Zach lived together. These were the men that were no doubt already calculating Scarlet’s soon to be career on their own. They probably weren’t pleased with the fact that she was living with him – which was sort of comical seeing as how her image had tamed greatly since Zach’s appearance in her life. She dressed more appropriately, still scandalous by her parents terms, but a lot more tame than what had been pre-Zach. She was more careful of what she said, didn’t continent hop quite like she used to. To them, Zach must have seemed like a saint brought in to save the Harris campaign. They just didn’t realized that he had saved it more ways than one. It was a little past four in the morning when she felt someone nudge her and she sat up tiredly, looking over at Zach. How in the hell was he awake, how long had he been awake? She wasn’t sure if he stayed up the entire night or if he had nodded off with her on the couch and just happened to be awake before she was. But nonetheless she smiled tiredly at him, leaning up against his side as she yawned and looked over at the television. “ They’re announcing it any second now,” one of the campaign leaders said enthusiastically. Clearly he hadn’t slept. Scarlet reached over to take the glass from Zach’s hands, unsure of what was in it – coffee, water, powerade, vodka. Didn’t really matter. After taking a sip she leaned over to set it down on the coffee table before resting back against his side. Her hand found his, intertwining her fingers through his before she began to trace her thumb back and forth on the outside of his hand. “ It is with great excitement that we announce the future leader of the free world.. future President Harris,” the anchor announced without any infliction in his tone to indicate whether he was happy or not. Dead silence echoed through the penthouse for a sheer second before the screaming and cheers started. Scarlet remained silent, making a slight face at the commotion, turning her head into Zach’s chest to tone out some of the yelling that was hurting hear ears considering she was still basically coming out of being asleep. Scarlet sat there tiredly for another minute, letting them have their fun and celebration before she stood up from the couch. She reached down, holding her hand out to Zach and waited for him to take hold of it before she headed off to their room. Eventually everyone else would leave their penthouse. “ I love you,” she said tiredly, giving him a kiss on the lips before she crawled onto the bed, too tired to cover herself with the sheets as she laid her head against the pillow.
