Bentley brought his hand up to his hat, holding the brim of it as he shook it back and forth real quick to scratch the front of his forehead. “ Babe, why is your shirt unbuttoned?” Abigail asked with frustration in her tone before she started buttoning his shirt. He however was looking down at his phone and trying to send Libby a text. “ Are you seriously texting her right now?” she asked and Bentley nodded without thinking much of it, “ Mhm,” he said, finally putting his phone in his back pocket. “ So nothing ever happened between you two? Ever?” she asked, lifting her eyebrow up at him in disbelief. “ Uh, nooit..” he said, making a slight face before he pulled his jeans up at the side over his hips. “ You should have worn a belt,” Abigail said, scolding him slightly. Bentley licked his lips, reaching down and took hold of her hand as he made his way through the empty apartment. It seemed nice enough. He never really thought he would be moving to the states from South Africa, but life had certainly brought him here. He had gotten accepted into Columbia University, and while New York isn’t the best place for a surfer, he could fly anywhere he needed to, surf and skate for American teams, and he was finally in the same place as his best friend growing up. He thought of Joel for a moment before bringing his attention back to the empty apartment. “ Are we meeting up with Joel for lunch?” she asked impatiently and he shook his head. “ Ah, no. Not today. I’m actually trying to hold off seeing him until some fashion show that Libby was talking about. Then I want to surprise him with moving here. But uh.. and I’m pretty sure he’s on the west coast somewhere for the tour right now,” he said, trying to remember where Joel had said he was last night. “ I want to meet his fiancé,” she said and Bentley scrunched his face up slightly. “ She’s a nice girl,” he offered, not really wanting to dive too deep into it. “ Yeah she’s a nice girl who hit the frikkin’ jackpot. That girl is never going to have to do anything for the rest of her life. So lucky,” she said while Bentley was busy looking out the window to see what kind of view he had from his soon to be bedroom. He smirked as she spoke and shook his head, that silly Abigail. She was so funny.
“ I don’t think your life is looking too bad either,” he said, giving her a soft smile. He didn’t have Joel Foster money.. but seriously, how many competitions a year did he have? And each one he won he earned about 500k for. Just because he didn’t hop on private planes and wear designer clothes didn’t mean he didn’t have money. He just didn’t surf and skate for money, he did it for the love of it. “Yeah well she gets to at least be spoiled by it. I guarantee you he doesn’t make her eat pizza from a cardboard box while watching Ridiculousness” she said, giving him a pointed smile. Bentley took in a deep breath as he smiled and walked over to her, placing his hands on her cheeks. “ I will take you out to a very nice restaurant tonight. And we can do whatever your little heart desires. Okay?” he asked, smiling down at her before he leaned down to place a kiss on her lips. “ Well I suppose it’s the least you could do since you brought me all the way to New York,” she said with a condescending smile before she pulled away from his embrace. “ I don’t even know why you want to live here in the first place. How are we supposed to work?” she asked, putting her arms out to the side. “… You asked to come,” he said in confusion before he shook his head, no sense in arguing about it. “ Well I travel all the time anyways, we’ll end up seeing each other the same amount,” he said, going over to sign the papers on the counter. Once he was finished he picked his skateboard up from sitting up on the wall and made his way out of the apartment, holding the door open for her as she left. “ Maybe we can get a tour of Taboo,” she said and Bentley gave a slight shake of his head. “ Let’s not bother them. Plus, I don’t like pulling the ‘Joel Foster’ card. Ever. And we can just enjoy spending some time together today, you and I” he said, smiling as they went to the elevator. “ Yeah,” she said quietly, crossing her arms once he pressed the button for the ground floor.
Bentley chewed on his gum anxiously as he thought about the surf competition the next day. New York was just a pit stop and he needed to fly out to California. But really, he was just itching to get back on a board. Today should really be about practicing and being in California the day before. But Abigail had wanted to come and spend some time in New York, so he wasn’t going to tell her no. He had to come anyways to sign papers for the apartment, he just hadn’t anticipated spending this much time here until Abigail decided to join. He didn’t even pay attention as Abigail was fixing his shirt, muttering about his clothing and adjusting the way his hat was on his head so he didn’t look ‘ completely homeless’. His mind was too focused on what he needed to bring to the water tomorrow. Once the doors opened her threw the skateboard down onto the ground and stepped onto it, skating out of the apartment building and onto the streets where he was still sort of surprised by the amount of people that just walked around New York. But after a bit they were far enough from everyone where he could skate freely. He passed by Abigail, stepping on the back of his board slightly so he could turn to go in circles around her, reaching his hand out to try and pat her on the butt which she quickly blocked by pushing his arm away from her. She was probably upset that he didn’t want to take a taxi back to their hotel, but he needed to stretch his legs out.
By the time they got back to the hotel, Abigail had already looked up every restaurant in New York on her phone and decided where she wanted to go, what Broadway play she wanted to see, and just where in the hell exactly he was taking her out for dessert afterwards. “ Broadway?” he asked, looking over at her. Seriously. He had a competition tomorrow. He needed to be getting to bed so that he could be rested after the flight tomorrow and ready to perform. “ Yeah. Problem?” she asked, but Bentley knew there wasn’t. “ No, I just didn’t know you were into it,” he said truthfully. “You can’t go to New York and not go to a Broadway show, Bent” she said as though it was obvious. Bentley smiled and gave a slight nod. “ Of course, you’re right” he said, kissing the side of her hair before he went to put on the clothes she had ‘approved’ for the evening. “ When do we have to leave tomorrow for your little surf thing?” she asked and he looked up while buttoning up his shirt. “ It’s a world competition.. and the flight leaves at like four am,” he said. “ Are you fucking kidding me?” she asked, dropping her curling iron down to the side. “ No..” he said hesitantly. “ Why is it so goddamn early?” she asked and Bentley narrowed his eyebrows. “ Well we have to be at the beach by like 8 am, so that was the latest we could go without me being late,” he said and she tossed her curling iron on the counter in the bathroom. “ Why didn’t you tell me this before? We could have gone today instead,” she snapped at him. “ I did tell you,” he said quietly, not wanting to upset her and ruin her night in New York. “ Whatever. I’m sleeping on the plane. And probably through your little contest.” she said, to which Bentley mouthed the word ‘competition’ to himself without saying anything. “ Well there’s nothing wrong with that. I’m sorry it’s so early,” he said, looking into the bathroom to watch her. “ It’s fine. I just wish you would consider other people in your plans” she said, adjusting her dress before she turned to look at him. “ You look lovely,” he said, flickering a small smile. “ Thanks, ready?” she asked before she picked up her clutch and walked past him, giving a slight roll of her eyes before she took a step back and kissed his cheek. The knock at the door made him lean away from the doorframe of the bathroom and went over to answer it. He smiled at the flowers that had arrived and paid the guy before turning and offering them to Abigail. Stargazers. Which were the same flowers he had bought her for every anniversary, birthday, event. They were her favorite after all. “ What am I supposed to do with those? You want me to jet em around on a plane tomorrow and hope they survive long enough to make it back to Africa?”. Bentley looked through the room, seeing the coffee pot and filled it with water before he placed the flowers in them. “ You’re right, I’ll have some sent to your home when you get back,”. Bentley looked down at his phone, seeing Libby’s and Joel’s names both flash across the screen in text messages but Abigail was quick to pick it up, turning his phone off completely and putting it in her purse. “ Phone’s off. This is bullshit.” she said before stepping towards him. “ Actually pay attention to me tonight, .. and I’ll pay attention to you later tonight” she said before smiling up at him and stepping up on her toes to kiss him. Yup. Didn’t have to ask him twice. “ Deal,” he said, sliding his arms around her lower waist as he pulled her close to his body to kiss her. He rest his forehead against hers as she kissed the side of his neck, adjusting his belt and tie so he looked more presentable before she held her hand on his cheek and kissed his other cheek before stepping away. “ Come on,” she said, tilting her head to the door. Bentley puffed his cheeks out, giving a small sigh before he shook his hand over his hair and picked up his wallet, sliding it into his back pocket as he opened the door for her, hoping she had a good time in New York when he should be resting up to win the competition tomorrow so they were a step closer to the life she apparently wanted.
