Joel stopped as he stepped into the apartment he shared with Lance in New York. Four other people were already there. He blinked, lowering his arm where he tossed his keys into the bowl that was on the small table and made his way into the living room. “ Hey…” she said, giving a head nod as he started to take his jacket off. “ Hey, about time you made it!” Dani said with a smile. Joel narrowed his eyes at her, laying upside down on the couch with her legs over the back of it. “ Don’t you ever hang out with your boyfriend?” he asked before placing on a polite smile. “ … Yeah,” Dani said after she seemed to ponder it over for a few moments. “ It’s good to see you guys anyways,” he said, walking over to Lance. “ It’s good to fucking SEE you, bro!” he said enthusiastically, bringing Lance in for a hug before he tightened his arms around him tightly. He hadn’t actually been around him since he heard the news that Lance was in recovery. “ Ah mate,.. yeah it’s great to see you, too”. Joel took a step back, pulling his jeans up over his hips as he nodded over towards the guy standing beside Lance. “ And you look like a Renner. You must be Noah, the one that’s moving into my room,” Joel said with a smirk as he offered his hand out to shake his hand. “ I’m Joel Foster, nice to meet you man,” he said but Noan instantly offered a small laugh of his own, “ Yeah I’m aware of who you are, I don’t live under a rock,” he said and Joel flinched his eyebrows close together for just a moment as he gave a nod and then looked over at the girls on the couch. “ No offense, Jessica, but why are you in my apartment?” he asked and Jessica looked up from her magazine. “ Hanging out with Dani..” she offered, but Dani made a ‘ yeah fucking right’ face and tilted her head on the couch to look at Joel. “ She’s avoiding Connor,” she said, placing another grape in her mouth.
“ That’s all fine and dandy but you cheated on my best friend,” he said as he gave a small sigh. “ He cheated on me, too..” she said. How the hell did that matter? Tyler was Joel’s friend. Not Jessica. “ So?” Joel asked as he made his way into the bedroom where he had dropped off an overnight bag last night that was actually carrying a few days worth of clothes, and his schoolbooks. High school may have been over, but it was hell over high water before his parents would let him skip college. So he had homework to do. After getting in last night he had gone to the studio, worked on some vocals, then passed out when he got home. Back to the studio this morning, needed to get through this homework right now, so he could go spend the rest of his time with Tori. “ You want to listen to the Bang track and make some suggestions?” Dani asked from the couch as she looked over at Joel. Joel lifted his eyebrow slightly as he tossed open his physics book on the coffee table and sat down beside her, “ Here’s a suggestion. Ask Renner.” he said before biting the edge of his lip and flipping through the pages to find the right chapter. After getting to it, he lifted the highlighter to his lips and bit the cap off, focusing intently on the words as he selectively ran the highlighter across certain passages. “ Are you going to be working at the studio?” Lance asked Noah as he tossed a basketball back and forth between his hands. Clearly they’d gone to do that and then come back to hang with the girls. It was weird to think about kids around his age just doing shit for fun. “ Ah I thought about it, but probably not. Let it be Logan’s thing. I’ll find my own ‘Renner’ thing to do. You had Wizards and acting.. I’ll figure it out” he said before tossing Lance a grin. Joel licked his lips lazily as he looked up. “ Yeah well you better figure out a plan. New York will swallow you alive otherwise,”
Joel tapped his pencil against the coffee table in the beat to music as he read through the chapter before taking down some notes. He definitely needed to get his quiz done before he headed out to see Tori. “ Want me just to take it for you?” Lance asked and Joel smirked. “ You’re smart, but not that smart,” he said before smirking at him. Joel looked over at Dani and Jessica and rolled his eyes. “ Get out, go see Connor. This is fucking retarded. He was worth potentially breaking one of my best friends hearts for, but you are too chicken shit to go face him? Up.” he said, tilting his head to the door. “ I don’t think you can really decide what I d-“ Jessica started to protest but Joel shut his physics book before grabbing her by the arm and standing her up. He kneeled down, throwing her over his shoulder before he headed to the front door and set her on the ground. “ GET. OUT.” he said before he shut the door. As he turned to walk away he saw her purse on the grand and picked it up, opening the door and handing it to her. “ But seriously, good luck,” he said before slamming the door in her face again.
Joel headed into his closet and picked out a new pair of supra’s to wear with his outfit tonight before he stopped in the living room and looked at Dani, Lance and Noah. “ Are you sure it’s okay if I leave you two alone?” he said, pointing back and forth between Dani and Lance. “ Noah is here,” Lance said as though that offered explanation. But Dani quickly threw a pillow at Lance and flipped him off, adding herself, “ And the fact that we love different people,” she said before waving to Joel. “ Have fun with Victoria,” she said before giving him a wink and resting back against the couch. “ Alright, I’ll see you idiots later. Noah it was nice to meet you, see you around,” he said, giving them a small wave as he headed out of the apartment. Joel placed his sunglasses on before pulling his jeans up at the side and making his way out of the apartment building. After walking down about half a block he took his earphones out and hooked them up to his phone to play some music. Like A G6 was possibly the dumbest song ever, but it was probably the song most played on his iPod. And it was always the first song he put on when he decided to throw a party whether at home or out on tour. Joel listened to the music, tilting his neck from side to side to let it pop as he walked his way towards Tori’s parents place. Joel liked to think he had found a perfect balance between typical fiancé and famous kid trying to lavish people. For instance, he was really in the mood for snowboarding. And while he would have no problem asking Tori if she wanted to go on a vacation, it was just a date night tonight. So he’d tried to find a balance and settled on ice skating. In a rented out skating rink where he had Christmas lights up put around the entire rink. He’d even paid them to put a layer of ice over it that was dyed her favorite color, stolen a few playlists from her iPod and put them on his phone so he could play her favorite music while they skated. And dinner was something he usually spent a lot of money on, trying to make sure it was the best. But tonight he had left a blanket at the skating rink with a basket of some of their favorite snack foods. He wanted to take her to a rooftop where they could sit out on the blanket and look down on the Christmas tree that was just put up in Rockefeller center.
Joel looked over his shoulder a couple times, doing a double take when he noticed that a few girls had realized who he was. Joel twirled the piece of gum in his mouth before chewing on it a few times. He looked back ahead of himself casually before he stepped off of the sidewalk and hailed a cab, quickly climbing into the back of it. He gave the cab driver the address before he took his hat off, shaking his hand out over his hair and placed it back on. Well at least he was able to get a small walk in today. When the cab pulled up, Joel pulled his wallet out before handing over a hundred dollar bill and bolted out of the cab and ran into Tori’s building where she shared an apartment with her mom. “ Good evening, Mr.Foster” the doorman said before Joel grinned at him, “ Yes it is,” he agreed happily before making his way into the elevator. He could feel the present in his back pocket and he leaned away from the wall he was up against. It wasn’t like Tori wasn’t used to getting presents from him. He’d become the king of flower and jewelry deliveries. But this one was a little more personal, a lot cheaper. A lot of his acoustic sets often included someone else playing guitar while he sang, every now and then he played guitar. But the one instrument he made sure he always played? The piano. So after one of his last shows he’d had them tear it apart, melt down one of the ivory keys and then used one of the strings inside the piano to make a bracelet of it. They hadn’t used all of the ivory so that it was still feminine and dainty. But he knew him being on tour was hard, and this way she could have something that was a part of him with her at all times. Joel looked up as the elevator doors opened and stepped out into the familiar hallway, stepping up to the door before he knocked lazily on it.
When her mom answered the door, Joel smiled, and upon hearing the voice of his own mother in his head , lifted his hand up and took his hat off before bending the bill of it and shoving it in the back of his free pocket. “ Hey,” he said happily as he stepped inside and hugged her. “ I’m here for your daughter,” he tried to say in an authoritative tone before he laughed and let go of her. “ How are you? You look great,” he said, gesturing to her as he took a step back. “ Oh I’ve been fine, Joel. Save your flattery for Tori. How’ve you been?” she asked as she went further into the apartment. “ I’ve been good, just doing some studying,” he said as he took his shoes off and headed inside. “ Studying,” her mother said with a slight laugh. “She’s in her room, hun” she said before offering him a smile. “ Thanks. Oh hey by the way. I found that macaroon that you really liked. They’re from France. You should be getting a shipment later this week,” he said as he clapped his hand against the hallway to Tori’s room and came into her room, shutting her door behind himself. “ There she is,” he said quietly as he smiled at her. Joel moved over to where she was sitting at her desk and looped his arm around her lower waist before bringing his other hand into the side of her hair as he leaned down to kiss her. “ Come here,” he said, picking her up easily and carried her over to her bed. After setting her down he climbed over her, pinning her against the bed as he moved his fingertips from being tangled in her down the curves of her side until he clutched them tightly to her hips while kissing her. Joel brought his hand to the inside of her thigh where he traced a small circle with his thumb while moving his lips away from her mouth and to the side of her neck, kissing her soft skin slowly as his lips took a path down to the center of her chest.
Joel clenched his jaws together, forcing himself to stop before he gave a quiet sigh and lifted himself higher so he could give her another kiss. “ I got you something,” he said, finally sitting up before he took the small box out of his back pocket and set it in her lap, watching her carefully as she opened it. He had hoped she would like it anyways. It wasn’t anything flashy, but it was unique. And he hoped it would remind her of him. He smiled as she opened it and then stood up to stand in front of her and help her put it on. “ You’re going to need a coat for our date tonight,” he said, leaning down to kiss the side of her hair before he went over to her closet to grab her jacket for her. Once she was ready to go he said goodbye to her mom, leading her out of the back of the apartment building into an ally. He was pretty sure he had told a car to meet them here, but then again when it came to planning things out Joel wasn’t a forgetful person. He reached over and lazily hung his arm over her shoulders to pull her closer to his body as they walked. “ So what does my future wife want for Christmas?” he asked with a broad smile as they walked. “ Name it, it’s yours.” he said. It might sound like money didn’t matter, but the only reason he phrased it that way was because he knew whatever present Tori would want, wouldn’t be money related. But he’d be willing to sacrifice anything to make her happy. Joel licked his lips when they reached the end of the ally, but he looked at the car before looking at Tori. He looked her in the eyes for a few moments before moving his arm away from her shoulders and took her hand.
The slow smile crept across his features as he spoke quietly. “ Marry me,” he said gently, before giving a slight shake of head. “ Not just in a ceremony in a year from now. But tonight.. We don’t need to go to a court house, or get your moms permission. We don’t need to make a mess of things. We just need to make a promise to each other. The rest is just paperwork.. technicalities.” he said, looking down at the engagement ring on her hand before he brought her hand up and placed it on his chest. “ This is it, Tori. I promise you I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to make you the happiest woman alive. I’ll always be by your side.. even if I’m not sleeping in the same bed that night. I might be gone for work sometimes, but my heart? You can keep that with you, it’s yours. So marry me tonight. Let’s make that commitment. I can do it. From this moment forward I can look at myself as your husband and not just your fiancé. I can be anything you want me to be. Be my wife tonight.. marry me another time,” he said before giving a nervous smirk.
